(see this users gallery) Miss Winslow And Son aired from March until May 1979 on CBS.
How times changed. In 1952 when Lucille Ball was about to have a baby on I Love Lucy, the CBS censors would not even alow the word " pregnant" to be used in the scripts. That, they said , was too sexually suggestive ( reluctantly, they used " expecting" instead). By 1979 the same network was ready for Miss Winslow who was not only pregnant but unwed, having decided not to marry the father of her child.
Susan Winslow was played by tv actress Darleen Carr who had grown up on tv in the 1970's appearing as a regular or semi-regular in many series. She was for example , Karl Malden's daughter on The Street's Of San Francisco and Henry Fonda's on The Smith Family where her brother was none other than Ron Howard.
In the first episode she gave birth to a bouncing baby boy, whom she named Eddie. Daddy left for a job in Brazil and Susan, an attractive 23-year old set about raising the infant alone, making a living as a freelance art designer, and dealing with family who did not aprove of her descision. Susan sometimes sought the assistance of her neighbor, a rather arrogant and sarcastic author named Harold Neistadter ( Roscoe Lee Browne), who grudgingly helped out with the baby when asked. Despite his gruff exterior, he was actually rather fond of Susan and Eddie. Susan's socially prominent parents Warren and Evelyn ( Elliot Reid, Sarah Marshall) were aghast at what she'd done and tried to keep the truth from their friends while scrambling to find her a husband. Little Eddie just cooled.
Rounding out the cast was William Bogart as Mr. Callahan, Susan's boss; Ellen Sherman as Rosa Vallone and Joe Rassulo as Angelo Vallone.
