Good Grief aired from September 1990 until March 1991 on FOX.
Comedian Howie Mandel starred in this absurd comedy as a former con artist, Ernie Lapidus, who had married into a family of morticians and was now running roughshod over the business-The Sincerity Mortuary in Dacron, Ohio, the 63rd largest city in the state. His straight-laced brother-in-law Warren( Joel Brooks), who had run the business prior to Ernie's arrival, found it difficult to deal with the high-profile promotional approach Ernie used to drum up business, including tasteless commercials on local tv. Debbie ( Wendy Schaal), Ernie's wife and Warren's sister, who played the organ at funerals, spent considerable time trying to keep peace between the men. Also on hand were Raoul( Sheldon Feldner), the mortuary's silent handyman, who was Ernie's mother before she/he had undergone a sex change operation and Ringo ( Tom Poston), Ernie's father and former partner, whose scams around the funeral home drove poor Warren to distraction.
A Review from USA TODAY
TV PREVIEW/ BY MATT ROUSH
'Good Grief'
Let us gather to mourn Fox's disastrous fall schedule, with Good Grief yet another nail in its coffin. The network thinks just by announcing a distasteful concept-here's a sitcom set at a morturary-a crowd will show up. They'll flee when they see smug Howie Mandel mugging shamelessly as a con man who marries into an undertaking family and drives his staid brother-in-law ( Joel Brooks) crazy. The jokes including puns on the word " mounting" ( as in stuffing), and lines like " Daddy wouldn't be caught dead in a dress." Their's plenty of dead air here, anywhere laughs should be.
