(see this users gallery) Ensign O'Toole aired from September 1962 until September 1963 on NBC.
This military comedy followed along the same lines as McHale's Navy ( which also premiered in 1962), but it was set in peacetime. O'Toole ( Dean Jones), was a junior officer aboard the destroyer Appleby, clever and an expert on almost everybody's subject, but seldom to be found when there was work to be done. His foils were the usual assortment of lunatic crew members and the overbearing and ambitious supply officer Lt. Rex St. John ( Jack Mullaney). The ship's executive officer was Lt. CDR. Virgil Stoner ( Jack Albertson). He relayed orders from the captain, who was never seen but only heard, barking orders over the ' squawkbox."
Based on 2 books by Bill Lederer, All The Ships At Sea and Ensign O'Tole and Me. Lederer served as consultant for the series.
