The Betty White Show aired from September 1977 until January 1978 on CBS.

After achieving her greatest fame as the delightfully bitchy Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show , Betty White was given her own sitcom in 1977. She starred as Joyce Whitman, a fourtyish movie actress whose career had been on the decline until she was offered the starring role in a new television series Undercover Woman ( a loose parody on the real tv series Police Woman). Joyce jumped at the chance, only to discover that the director was her suave, sarcastic ex-husband, John Elliot( John Hillerman). None of the mutural antagonism that had ended their marriage had ebbed and the 2 of them spent much of their time on the set putting each other down. Others working on Undercover Woman were Joyce's tv partner, Tracy Garrett( Caren Kaye), a sexy young actress who was mindlessly clawing her way to the top, using anybody and anything to get there; Fletcher Huff( Barney Phillips), a fidgety actor who played the police chief for whom Undercover Woman worked; and Hugo Muncy ( Charles Cyphers), her stuntman double. Also wandering around the set was Doug Porterfield ( Alex Henteloff), the network liason man assigned to the series by CBS ( yes they did refer to the network producing the mythical series as CBS). Doug was forever trying to assert himself as a network "executive" but his weak ,bumbling personality kept getting in his way, making it difficult for anyone to take him seriously.

Away from the studio, Joyce's best friend was flaky Mitzi Maloney ( played by Georgia Engel, also from The Mary Tyler Moore Show), a lovable dumb blonde. Mitzi had worked at the unemployment office when Joyce was collecting unemployment checks, prior to her getting the part in Undercover Woman, and she subsequently became Joyce's roommate.
