(see this users gallery) Bette aired on CBS from October 2000 until March 2001.
This ill-fated knockabout comedy starred Bette Midler playing a caracature of her real life self. Bette was a successful and high-energy entertainer trying, with limited success, to also be a loving wife and mother but her hectic schedule and big ego kept getting in the way. Roy ( Kevin Dunn), was her understanding husband and Rose ( played by Lindsay Lohan in the pilot and Marina Malota in the series ), her active daughter. Rounding out the cast were Connie ( Joanna Gleason ), her cynical, overworked and underappreciated business manager, and Oscar ( James Dreyfuss), her sarcastic, long-suffering accompanist. Episodes delt with such topics as The Golden Globe Awards ( she won), appearances on talk shows, a recording session, faking a nervous breakdown to rejuvinate her sagging career and volunteering at Rose's school.
A number of celebrities-Danny Devito, George Segal, Dolly Parton, Oprah Winfrey, Tony Danza, and Olivia Newton-John among them-appeared as themselves on Bette but despite their presence and the pre-season hype, the series was unable to attract much of an audience. Kevin Dunn, upset with the limited role he had on the show, departed, and Robert Hays ( from the movie Airplane) took over the role-but not for long. His first episode, in which Bette made a none-too-subtle reference to her "new" Roy, was the last one aired.
