Stephen Root found inspiration for the "NewsRadio" character of Jimmy -- the eccentric, down-to-earth, cut-to-the-chase businessman and owner of the fictional WNYX news radio station -- in his own father, a Wyoming cowboy: "My father, who grew up on a ranch in Wyoming and became a construction supervisor, just knew how to get things done in a simple, to-the-point manner."
Root had recurring roles on "Sweet Justice" and "L.A. Law," and he starred on the series "Harts of the West." His additional TV credits include guest-starring roles on "Christy," "Chicago Hope," "NYPD Blue," "Murphy Brown," "Home Improvement," "Party of Five," "Northern Exposure" and "Roseanne." In November Root will appear in the NBC miniseries "Pandora's Clock," co-starring Robert Loggia, Daphne Zuniga and Richard Dean Anderson.
Among Root's numerous feature-film credits are "Bye Bye Love," "Dave," "Kindergarten Cop," "Extreme Justice," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Robocop III," "V.I. Warshawski," "Ghost," "Black Rain," "Crocodile Dundee," "Guilty by Suspicion" and "Stanley and Iris."
On stage, he starred in the national touring production of "Driving Miss Daisy" and traveled with The National Shakespeare Company in "Hamlet," "The Winter's Tale" and "Romeo and Juliet."
In his off-camera hours, Root likes to spend time with his family, and he enjoys collecting CDs, particularly of British rock and roll. Born in Sarasota, Florida, Stephen Root's birthday is November 17. |
