Jonathan Silverman, whose TV alter ego endures the joys, struggles and pain of being single, embraces the idea of staying single in real life. Says Silverman: "My involvement in this project is the ultimate excuse for not settling down and marrying. I need to stay single for the good of the show. Some might call it 'commitment phobia.' I call it research."
A Los Angeles native, Silverman moved to New York City at the age of 17. Upon his graduation from high school, he attended New York University while starring in a variety of Broadway plays, including Neil Simon's "Brighton Beach Memoirs," "Biloxi Blues" and "Broadway Bound."
He has more than a dozen feature-film credits, including starring roles opposite Jodie Foster in "Stealing Home" and Gene Hackman in "Class Action." He also starred in "Weekend at Bernie's," "Weekend at Bernie's II," "Breaking the Rules," "Little Sister," "Little Big League," "At First Sight" and "French Exit."
On television, he had a regular role on "Gimme a Break" and starred in the movie version of "Broadway Bound" with Anne Bancroft and Hume Cronyn and in "12:01" with Martin Landau. He also starred in the cable movies "Traveling Man" with John Lithgow; "For Richer, for Poorer" with Jack Lemmon; and "Hands That See." Silverman guest-starred on NBC's "Friends" as a doctor who delivered Ross' (David Schwimmer) baby, and on NBC's "Caroline in the City." He recently completed production on Neil Simon's NBC movie "London Suite," which also stars "Frasier's" Kelsey Grammer and "Seinfeld's" Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Michael Richards.
Additionally, Silverman is involved in Los Angeles theater and tries to work in at least one production each year. He recently had a role in "The Illusion," written by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner, and co-starring Lea Thompson.
Silverman lives in Los Angeles, where he serves on the board of directors of several charities, including The Young Leadership Circle, which raises funds for cancer and AIDS research. He is also the shortstop for the Hollywood All Stars, a celebrity baseball team that plays at charity events across the country. A sports enthusiast, he also enjoys jogging, playing tennis and golfing. His birthday is August 5.
