Anthony Clark, who has appeared in feature films, on Broadway and as a stand-up comic, has something in common with his "Boston Common" character besides the charming duality of Southern humility and urban edge. A native of Lynchburg, Va., Clark moved to Boston to study acting at Emerson College, where he was exposed to the same comedy traditions that have influenced Jay Leno (NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno"), Norman Lear and Steven Wright (NBC's "Mad About You").

His honest, blue-collar brand of humor, earnest manner, and innate ability to tap into the comedy of Main Street USA and its denizens won him the "College Entertainer of the Year" award while at Emerson.

"I use the contrast between my city and country life backgrounds as the basis of my comic portrayals," explains Clark. "I allow the audience to find the humor in themselves and their idiosyncrasies, without talking down to them."

His television credits include appearances on the "1995 HBO Young Comedians Special" hosted by Garry Shandling and "The Stand-Up Show" on the BBC. He has also guest-starred on the series "Ellen."

On Broadway, Clark starred opposite Gary Sinise and Lois Smith in the Tony Award-winning production of "The Grapes of Wrath."

Among his feature film credits is the box-office smash "The Rock" starring Sean Connery. Clark lives in Los Angeles, and in his spare time he enjoys basketball and watching "any NBC Sports programming." His birthday is April 4.
