With Hulk-like intensity, actor-director Bill Bixby tried to destroy the prostate cancer raging inside him.
But after a two year struggle, Bixby, 59, died peacefully at his Century City, Calif., home Sunday, his wife of seven weeks, Judith Kliban-Bixby, and friends at his side.
"Even when Bill was in excruciating pain he never dissolved into self-pity," says Paul Junger Witt, executive producer of NBC's Blossom. Bixby, the show's director for the last two seasons, was on the job last week.
: His courage and commitment and humanity were inspiring."
The popular actor-whose career spanned 30 years-starred in several prime-time series, including My Favorite Martian ( 1963-66) and The Incredible Hulk ( 1978-82).
Longtime friend Ray Walston recalls fondly their " buddy-buddy" days on and off the set of Martian.
" Even though I was 20 years older, we had a wonderful time...He was such a likable guy," says Walston, Judge Bone on CBS' Picket Fences.
"I'm distressed that such a wonderful spirit would be felled by such a horrendous disease."
Bixby's role as a stalwart single dad on The Courtship of Eddie's Father secured his spot in 30-somethings' hearts as one of tv's all-time superdads.
Brandon Cruz, 31. who played the freckle-faced son on the '70's sitcom says his on-screen " best friend" was a real-life pal.
" The words to the theme song, ' People let me tell you 'bout my best friend,' boy that was true," says Cruz. His rock band, Harmful if Swallowed, hopes to re-record the theme and donate all proceeds to cancer research.
" I spoke to Bill about that a few weeks ago and he was floored," he says.
The two have remained close for 25 years. " Bill was a mentor/father to me. He taught me everything I know...Hollywood if not the world has lost an incredible person," says Cruz.
" Ive been meaning to call him to let him know how happy I am," he says choking back tears. " I'm sorry. I guess its starting to hit me." |
