Set in the small California town of Quake City in 1869, this comedy western revolved around the lives of a good-natured gambler , the two young children he won in a card game , and the townsfolk in Quake City. Russell Donovan ( Barry Van Dyke) was the gambler caring for his two young wards, Celia ( Bridgette Anderson) and Clovis ( played by Keith Mitchell in the first four episodes of this limited series and by Adam Rich in the last two). Theodore and Amos ( Tim Thomerson, Geoffrey Lewis) were two bumbling would-be desperadoes , vainly attempting to build reputations as outlaws, and Homer McCoy ( Henry Jones) was Quake City's barber, sheriff, and justice of the peace. Homer's ex-wife Nettie ( Janis Paige) ran the only hotel in town, and Col. Mound ( Pat McCormick) was the owner of the local stagecoach line. Russell's attempts to bring up two precoucious childre, and the hapless antics of Theodore and Amos provided the focus of this series.
Based on The Walt Disney films The Apple Dumpling Gang and The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again, in which Bill Bixby played Donovan and Don Knotts and Tim Conway played Theodore and Amos.
