The Thin Man ran on NBC from September 1957 until June 1959.

Nick and Nora Charles ( Peter Lawford, Phyllis Kirk) were weathy New York socialites living with their wire-haired fox terrier, Asta, in a luxurous Park Avenue apartment. When he married Nora, Nick retired from his occupation as a private detective, but his underworld friends were still around to haunt him. Out of her love for Nick, Nora tried to be hospitable to his friends from the seamier side of life. The friend she had the most trouble being courteous to was Beatrice Dane ( Nita Talbot), a beautiful con-artist friend of Nick's who used the alias " Blondie Collins." Asta, with the mistaken notion that he was a bloodhound, spent much of his time sniffing out clues and suspects. Nick, Nora, and Asta were a team of super-sleuths, solving crimes together for the pure enjoyment of it.

Based on the characters created by novelist Dashiell Hammett and portrayed in films for many years by William Powell and Myrna Loy. The name " Thin Man" did not refer to Nick Charles, incidentally, but to another character in the first ( 1934) Thin Man movie.

Phyllis Kirk, 79, Who Starred in ‘House of Wax’ and ‘Thin Man’, Dies

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 22 (AP) — Phyllis Kirk, who played the raven-haired beauty stalked by Vincent Price in the 1953 horror film “House of Wax,” died on Thursday at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Los Angeles. She was 79.

The cause was a post cerebral aneurysm, said her publicist, Dale Olson.

Phyllis Kirkegaard was born in Plainfield, N.J., but moved to New York City in her late teens to study acting and shortened her last name to Kirk. She appeared in several Broadway plays before moving to Hollywood, where she starred with leading men including Frank Sinatra (“Johnny Concho”) and Jerry Lewis (“The Sad Sack”). She gained the most attention for her role in “House of Wax” because it was the first major 3-D movie.

Ms. Kirk later worked in television, memorably playing Peter Lawford’s wife in the series “The Thin Man.” She was also a regular on “The Red Buttons Show” and host of the ABC talk show “The Young Set.”

By the late 1950’s her acting career had slowed down, and she turned her focus to social causes. She spoke out against the death sentence of the convicted kidnapper Caryl Chessman. After the 1965 Watts race riots, she helped finance two preschool programs for poor families in the South Los Angeles neighborhood.

She is survived by a sister, Megan Kirk Flax of Santa Rosa, Calif.; two stepdaughters; and a step-granddaughter.
