Report To Murphy ran from April until May 1982 on CBS.
Short-lived comedy about the trials of an idealistic young parole officer. Murphy ( Michael Keaton) was new to the profession and was not yet as disillusioned as his fellow parole officers. His enthusiasm and willingness to try unorthodox approaches in dealing with parolees were ridiculed by veteran, by-the-book Charlie ( Donnelly Rhodes), the office sourpuss. Even his supervisor, Blanche ( Olivia Cole), and his fellow parole officer, Lucy ( Donna Ponterotto), sometimes found it hard to understand why Murphy got so personally involved with his " clients." Baker ( Margot Rose) was a pretty young district attorney with whom Murphy had an on again/off-again relationship, depending on whether or not she was prosecuting one of his parolees, and Big Walter ( Ken Foree) was a car thief who was one of Murphy's favorite " clients."

TV: TWO NEW CBS SITUATION COMDIES AND INSIDE NICARAGUA

ON top of the ratings heap, CBS-TV never stops trying to get better and better - or at least more and more -every day in every way. Tonight the William S. Paley network is introducing two situation comedies. One, ''Report to Murphy,'' finds its fun and games in a metropolitan parole office. The other, ''Making the Grade,'' goes to a contemporary ''Blackboard Jungle'' kind of high school and plays it for laughs.
The Murphy of ''Report to Murphy'' (he doesn't seem to have a first name) is a young parole officer played by Michael Keaton. Murph is a liberal type of guy, convinced that a little understanding and good will can put his ''clients'' back on the right road. He is balanced by Charlie (Donnelly Rhodes), a by-the-book traditionalist, who is convinced that most parolees ''are meat - bad meat.'' Somewhere in the middle is Blanche (most of the characters don't seem to have more than one name), who tolerates Murphy's unorthodox ways while frequently warning him, ''You gotta be tough.''
In the first episode, produced and written by Patricia Jones and Donald Reiker, the creators of the series, Murphy inherits one of Charlie's tougher cases, a sterling loser named Vic (Dan Hedaya). Vic was personally kicked out of Boys' Town by Father Flanagan. Undaunted, Murphy begins wielding his special rehabilitative techniques, which include psychodrama sessions. Vic seems impressed, but eventually walks off with Murphy's stereo tape deck.
The denouement takes place in a pawn shop, complete with guns and the strong possibility of violence. Finally, there's this sparkling exchange of dialogue.
MURPHY: There's a reward in knowing you helped society. BORED PAWNBROKER: I'd rather have the cash. DEPARTING MURPHY: Jerk!
