The Cop And The Kid aired from December 1975 until March 1976 on NBC.
This was another of the ethnic comedies so popular in the 1970's. Through a strange circumstance, portly middle-aged Irish cop Frank Murphy ( Charles Durning), found himself assigned custody of Lucas ( Tierre Turner), a young, black, streetwise orphan. Murphy had suffered an asthma attack while chasing Lucas, following a shoplifting incident. Knowing that the asthma could be cause for Murphy's dismissal from the force, Lucas blackmailed Murphy into asking for leniency for him at his trial. Murphy did this so well that the court made him Lucas's legal guardian. The efforts of Murphy and his mother, Bridget ( Patsy Kelly), to reform young Lucas provided the comedy.
