The Cavanaughs aired from December 1986 until July 1989 on CBS.
Crochety old Barnard Hughes played crochety old "Pop" Cavanaugh-as Irish as a shillelagh, and about as blunt-in this ethnic family comedy. His daughter Kit ( Christine Ebersole) had left Boston 20 years earlier in search of fame, but now she was back, an aging and much divorced showgirl, to help raise her widowed brother Chuck's family. Sparks flew between strong-willed Pop and his wayward daughter, but underneath there was a lot of love. Often caught in the comic crossfire were Chuck ( Peter Michael Goetz), a busy executive with the family-run Cavanaugh Construction Company, and his four kids; Chuck Jr. ( John Short), a young priest with the demeanor of a talk show host; Mary Margaret ( Mary Tanner), a shy teenager who idolized the freewheeling Kit; and the obnoxious young twins Kevin and John ( Danny Cooksey, Parker Jacobs). A frequent guest star was Art Carney as Pop's brother James "the weasel" Cavanaugh, the owner of Cavanaugh Construction and Chuck's boss.
