Produced by Jack Webb, whose realistic portrayal of police work had scored a major hit in Dragnet, Adam-12 delt with the day-to-day working world of 2 uniformed policemen assigned to patrol-car duty. Officer Pete Malloy ( Martin Milner), was a senior officer who at the start of the series was teamed with a probationary rookie cop, Jim Reed (Kent McCord). As members of The Los Angeles Police Department, they encountered a wide range of cases in each episode, some serious, some trivial, some amusing, and some tragic. Running as it did for seven seasons, Adam-12 saw changes in the status of the officers as the years passed. During the 1970-1971 season Jim Reed was promoted from rookie to officer, and in the following year Officer Malloy was upped to policeman 3, one notch below the rank of sergeant.
