(see this users gallery) The Stu Erwin Show ran from October 1950 until April 1955 on ABC.
One of TV's first filmed sitcoms, The Stu Erwin Show was perhaps TV's leading bumbling-father series in the 1950's. Stu Erwin had made a long career of similar roles in movies and on radio before he came to TV in 1950. He was perfect for the role; he looked and acted like a well-meaning folksy, but completely incompetent middle-aged suburban parent.
Stu Erwin played Stu Erwin, principal of Hamilton High School, which often served to get him involved in various civic activities. But most of the action was around the Erwins own home, where Stu's every attempt to fix or improve things, surprise someone or bring up the kids turned to disaster. Wife June ( played by Erwin's real- life wife, June Collyer) generally came to the rescue. Teenage Joyce ( Ann Todd and later Merry Anders), and tomboy Jackie ( Sheila James), rounded out the family, while Willie ( Willie Best), was the handyman and various neighbors came and went.
In 1954 Joyce began going steady with Jimmy Clark ( Martin Milner), and in a December telecast they were married. Also in the 1954-1955 season the producers made an effort to portray Stu as a little less bumbling than he had been-something devoutly wished for by actor Erwin-but the series had run its course by 1955.
The series was syndicated under the title The Trouble With Father.
