Poster: Stuck In The '70's  (see this users gallery)

Flesh 'N' Blood aired from September until November 1991 on NBC.

A career obsessed Baltimore District Attorney found herself the reluctant host to cornpone kin in this variation of the Beverly Hillbillies. Rachel ( Lisa Darr), was a prototypical career woman of the '90's; young, single, attractive and on the fast track to high political office. The one thing missing in her life was the chance to find her natural mother, who had placed her up for adoption when she was a baby. Up popped Arlo Weed ( David Keith), a brash but endearing southern con man and widower who proved to be the brother she never knew she had-along with his kids, precious beauty( Meghan Andrews), and overall-clad yokel King ( Chris Stacy),They moved in and became an instant meddlesome family for " Aunt Rachel."

City slick collided with country crude as Rachel tried to smooth Arlo's rough edges, and enthusiastic Arlo tried to marry off his sis (" the li'l filly"). It was almost as if Gomer Pyle had shown up on Mary Tyler Moore's doorstep. Rachel's eager beaver chief investigator, the very short and very cynical Marty( Perry Anzilotti), had an unrequited crush on her; he also wanted her to run for Governor. Irene ( Peri Gilpen), Rachel's secretary and best friend had designs on Arlo.

Picks and Pans Review: Flesh 'n Blood

By David Hiltbrand

NBC (Fridays, 9:30 P.M. ET)

B

Lisa Darr, a Baltimore prosecutor on the fast track, is an adoptee looking to find out more about her biological family. She gets more than she bargained for in a wild swamp dog of a brother (David Keith) with Elvisy scimitar sideburns and two gamey kids (Chris Stacy and Meghan Andrews). "Whoa," Keith exults at their reunion, "a sister and gun permit in the same week."

Keith goes at the role pompadour and tongs, Darr is a marvelous straight woman, and the supporting cast is sharp. The show is crisply written even if the punch lines are hit-or-miss and the setups a mite labored.

And Keith's character, tossing off those cracked but colorful country aphorisms ("I guess that's about as plain as ketchup on eggs"), clears up one mystery. Now we know who's been writing Dan Rather's ad-libs all these years.
