"It didn't set out to change the world. It just made us laugh and that is why we love it." ~Lucille Ball, 1982

In the spring of 1977,ABC network executives gave a six-episode “trial” run to a new sitcom called THREE’S COMPANY. Almost overnight, it became one of the biggest hits of the entire season. Racy and daring for its time, this breakthrough bedroom farce skyrocketed to the Top 10 in its second week. Almost twenty-five years later, it remains one of the best-loved TV series of all time. Based on the provocative Brit-com MAN ABOUT THE HOUSE, THREE’S COMPANY follows the innuendo-laden but platonic misadventures and misunderstandings of clumsy and girl crazy Jack Tripper (John Ritter in the role that won him an Emmy®, a Golden Globe and the hearts of millions) and his two female roommates, pretty and practical minded Janet Wood (Joyce DeWitt) and naïve and dim-bulb blonde Chrissy Snow (Suzanne Somers). Along with their sexually frustrated landlords the Ropers (Norman Fell and Audra Lindley) and Jack’s fast-talking pal Larry (Richard Kline), these three outrageous roommates tripped and jiggled through a world of slapstick pratfalls and some of the most scandalously titillating comedy America had ever seen. THREE'S COMPANY – SEASON ONE features the original six episodes – including the classic pilot – that started it all, now collected on DVD for the first time ever!

Features the 6 episodes from the very short rookie year (note that the show was launched as a spring replacement):

#1 "A Man About The House" (Pilot)
#2 "...And Mother Makes Four"
#3 "Roper's Niece"
#4 "No Children, No Pets" (AKA: "No Children, No Dogs")
#5 "Jack the Giant Killer"
#6 "It's Only Money"

MY REVIEW: Monday, November 3, 2003 (On Sale Nov. 11)

I have had the pleasure to watch the DVD already for review.  It is excellent and the quality of the episodes amazes me.  Fans have been complaining for years about the edits the reruns have on TV, now the complaining will stop!  As each episode will be unedited.  Season 1 had only six episodes, and run about 24-25 minutes per episode.  Only one episode has a tag scene in season one ("Roper's Niece"), but when season two comes out, that will be a different story.  In this DVD, we have of course, the six episodes, along with an "In Memory of John" feature, and a sneak peek at "Season Two."  The "In Memory of John" feature also has a nice clip from the charity John was so involved with, UCP. Portions of the money from the sales will go to that charity.  So it will be for a good cause.  All fans should DEFINITELY buy season one in tribute to John and also, so we can eventually get all eight seasons on DVD (yes, that means unedited!).  Hopefully the DVD's sell out fast and they realize that they made the right decision on making seasonal DVD's for Three's Company.  Chris Mann was involved in this project as well, so for sure all fans will be pleased, as his judgment is the best.  Though, this DVD was supposed to come put in early 2004, I was still impressed on how well it was made.  The title shot and menu screen is amazing--everyone will love it.  All the episodes have a synopsis before you watch an episode.  All the extras that were planned for this season, will be inserted in the season two DVD, which will now come out it in early 2004 (Spring or so).  Also a more in depth tribute to John Ritter will be in that DVD.   Each season will get better and better. If you have not ordered yet, it's not too late.  You can click on one of the links above and buy a copy (or two!). So, please everyone buy it, so we can get all eight seasons released.

PRESS RELEASE:

COME AND KNOCK ON OUR DOOR…WE’VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU!

ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT RELEASES THREE’S COMPANY SEASON ONE ON DVD

Proceeds from the sale of the DVD to be donated to a charity very close to John Ritter, United Cerebral Palsy

TROY, MI – Anchor Bay Entertainment brings Jack, Janet, Chrissy, Larry and the Ropers to your living room on November 11, 2003. The DVD will contain all episodes, including the pilot, from season one with a suggested retail price of $19.98.

“In response to considerable retailer and consumer demand, we’ve accelerated the plans for the release of Three’s Company Season One,” commented David Vasile, president of Anchor Bay Entertainment. “We plan to donate a portion of the proceeds to United Cerebral Palsy in memory of John Ritter who was closely involved with UCP since the late ‘70s.”

For more than 15 years, John Ritter was involved with United Cerebral Palsy as host of the annual telethon. He also gave his time to support the activities of the local UCP chapter in Los Angeles and the national organization.

In an agreement with DLT Entertainment Ltd. formed this past summer, Anchor Bay Entertainment will distribute subsequent seasons of the highly-popular television show, Three’s Company, on DVD.

Three’s Company originated from a British comedy series, Man About the House, and its concept as a television show was brought to the U.S. in the late ‘70’s. The show was pitched to all networks but each one turned it down. Some time later, ABC contacted the creators and gave the green light for a pilot. Over one year and three pilots later, the first episode of Three’s Company aired on March 15, 1977.

The cast was formed to include John Ritter as Jack Tripper, Joyce DeWitt as Janet Wood and Suzanne Somers as Chrissy Snow. John Ritter was cast in the first round of auditions but Joyce DeWitt and Suzanne Somers were not the original Janet and Chrissy. Disney CEO Michael Eisner, then an ABC programming executive, stepped in and suggested new girls cast in those roles. DeWitt got the role as Janet after the role was recast and Somers got the role of Chrissy after two other actresses cast as Chrissy did not seem to embody the character. Eisner also played an instrumental role in inspiring the casting of Norman Fell and Audra Lindley as the nosy landlords, Mr. and Mrs. Roper.

Three’s Company became one of the highest-rated television series ever and continues to be a worldwide favorite.

Over the past year, the genre of television series on DVD has had an amazing sales growth. According to the DVD Release Report, it is projected that TV series-related DVD releases will have doubled by 2004 and is definitely one of the most popular and hottest categories in the DVD market. Three’s Company has appeared consistently on various consumer wish lists of titles they want released on DVD.

Anchor Bay Entertainment has established itself as a haven for some of the world's greatest filmmakers and studios. Over the past few years, critics and producers as well as the media have praised the company for its quality releases. USA Today singled out ABE for its "consistent excellence" in DVD releases.

In addition to releasing extraordinary feature films, the company distributes one of the most popular children's video series, Thomas & Friends. The series has received numerous awards and endorsements, been awarded platinum-selling status and ranks consistently on the Top 50 chart of children's weekly video sales (VideoScan). Anchor Bay Entertainment is #1 in market share for fitness (VideoScan), with such chart-topping brands as the "Crunch" and "For Dummies" series.

THREE’S COMPANY titillated and shocked audiences while becoming a surprise hit during its six-episode first season in spring of 1977. But its phenomenal success astounded even its talented cast when the show reached No. 1, earned a People’s Choice Award and landed on the cover of Newsweek during its second season in fall 1977 through spring 1978. More than twenty-five years after changing the American landscape, it remains one of the most endearing and enduring TV series of all time.

The legendary John Ritter stars as the aptly named Jack Tripper (the role that won him an Emmy, a Golden Globe and the hearts of millions), the affable bachelor who shares an apartment and zany hijinx with level-headed Janet Wood (Joyce DeWitt) and naïve blonde Chrissy Snow (Suzanne Somers). Sexy misunderstandings and slapstick pratfalls abound as the trio adjust to their 1970's-style cohabitation while engaging in comic mishaps with their sexually frustrated and suspicious landlords the Ropers (Norman Fell and Audra Lindley) and Jack’s smooth- operating pal Larry (Richard Kline). Whether hosting swinging-singles parties, unknowingly digging up marijuana from Mr. Roper’s “weed”-ridden garden, or relaxing at their neighborhood pub, The Regal Beagle, the trio learn how to live and laugh together their first year as co-ed roommates and friends.

THREE’S COMPANY — SEASON TWO features all 25 episodes of this sitcom’s classic second season — as well as the never-before-seen first pilot shot before Joyce DeWitt and Suzanne Somers were cast. This DVD also includes never-aired bloopers, vintage memorabilia and still photo galleries, and a very special John Ritter remembrance tribute featuring his longtime friend and co-star Joyce DeWitt.

Includes Special Liner Notes.

Season two episodes: #7 "Ground Rules", #8 "Jack Looks For a Job", #9 "Janet's Promotion", #10 "Strange Bedfellows", #11 "Chrissy's Date", #12 "Alone Together", #13 "Roper's Car", #14 "Cyrano de Tripper", #15 "Chrissy's Night Out", #16 "Stanley Casanova", #17 "Janet's High School Sweetheart", #18 "Jack's Uncle", #19 "Helen's Job", #20 "Three's Christmas", #21 "The Gift", #22 "The Rivals",#23  "The Baby Sitters", #24 "Home Movies", #25 "Jack in the Flower Shop", #26 "Jack's Navy Pal", #27 "Will the Real Jack Tripper . . .", #28 "Days of Beer and Weeds", #29 "Chrissy, Come Home", #30 "Bird Song" and #31 "Coffee, Tea or Jack".

MY REVIEW: Friday, April 16, 2004 (On Sale May 4)

If you think you've seen everything, you haven't seen anything yet!  This Three's Company Season Two DVD release is so good, that I can't stop watching it!  Ever since I got my copy on Monday (April 12), I haven't been able to stop watching.

This set is so good that you forget there are twenty-five episodes, because the extras are so tempting.  In fact, the extras are the first things I watched actually.  Starting with the first unaired pilot all the way to the Stills Gallery.  And for your readers out there, I am credited in the credits after you view all the photos in the gallery, you'll see my website (http://jacksbistro.freeservers.com) credited in the credits!

Let's start off with the menu navigation on this four-disc set.  It is very nicely done with the season two theme song playing in the background with moving images of Jack at first, followed by Chrissy, and on.  Disc one contains the first six episodes of the season.  Disc two and three have seven episodes each and disc four has five episodes and the extras.  All four discs also has that ever famous Play All feature.

Now for the packaging.  It is nicely packaged in Digibook format.  So when you open the case, you flip to the next CD like you would with a book.  It is quite unique and nice.  You have to remove the case from the box, which also is nice.  Both covers, the cover for the box, and the cover for the case are pictured above.

Now for the extras!  Get ready. Take a deep breath because this is going to make you drool.  If you don't drool, you are no fan--just kidding!  The first unaired pilot is just great.  Many have asked or wondered, is there a theme song?  I never knew this, but yes there was!  It's an interesting theme, it's sort of like the theme we all know and love but with no lyrics.  You'll see what I mean when you watch the DVD.  It's also made by Joe Raposo, who wrote the theme to Three's Company.  As for the other extras, the ten minute featurette Joyce DeWitt does on John Ritter's life and career is so well done and truly came from her heart.  She had some very nice words to say and presented John's vast projects clearly.  There was also another extra that focuses on John on Three's Company and shows his funniest moments from all eight seasons on Three's Company, a nice twenty-two minute package.  I don't know how they got the bloopers in such great quality, but they look so good!  They run for about twelve minutes and are hilarious.  The bloopers start off with cast intros that the director does before each taping, so this is a must see.

After you've seen all twenty five episodes from this season, why don't you take the trivia game?  If you get them all right, you will be treated to a surprise video (Hint: John Ritter 1967).  A nice 25 minute package of Chris Mann talking about the classic season two episode "Days of Beer and Weed" is also featured.  Chris talks about the episode, while the episode is playing.  He has some nice stories of John and the rest of the cast to share along with some great analysis of this classic episode.  The only thing missing from this was a telestrater!  It would have been cool if he could show Mr. Roper in slow motion being whacked by Mrs. Roper and circling what Mr. Roper could have done, but still it was well worth it! Then there are three six minute Best of Season Two Clips of Janet, Chrissy, and The Ropers.  And finally, the last bunch of extras are photos of memorabilia (Chrissy Doll, etc.) and the stills (which I'm in the credits for!!).  Also, there are lengthy bio's on John Ritter, Joyce DeWitt, and Suzanne Somers.

Oh yeah, there are episodes on this set too!  I mentioned before how the episodes are laid out in each disc.  The video and audio quality is very crisp and clear for 1977-78.  All the episodes are unedited and in the 25 minute range, with some more and some slightly lower. There are some tag scenes from a few episodes that have probably never been seen since its original run, unless you are from an outside country.  Every single episode has the full season two theme song, which feature the clips from season one. This set is any fan's dream and is a must buy.  Buy it, cherish it, and keep it forever.  If you want to see every single season released, tell everyone you know to buy it.  Season Three will be out later this year and Season Four in early 2005, everything after that depends on the sales of this and those releases.  So go to the top of the SEASON 2 section and pre-order TODAY!

Three's Company Season Two originally premiered September 13, 1977 and it was during this season that the Nielsen ranking went from number 11 to number three.  Two of the shows made it to number one.  Season two was complete with guest stars including Loni Anderson (WKRP in Cincinnati), Dick Sargent (Bewitched), Sally Kirkland (Bruce Almighty), and Natalie Schafer (Gilligan's Island).  Ritter's talents as a master physical comedian, the addition of Richard Kline's comical character Larry Dallas and the cast overall's likeability helped the second season to secure the show's status in the ratings and with viewers.  In 1978, the show was nominated for three Emmys including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (John Ritter) and Outstanding Achievement in Video Tape Editing for a Series (Jerry Davis).

Three’s Company originated from the Thames Television comedy series, "Man About the House," and its concept as a television show was brought to the U.S. in the late ‘70’s by DLT Entertainment, Ltd., and independent producer and distributor of television programming worldwide. In addition to Season 3, a few weeks later John Ritter's 1980 comedy special JOHN RITTER BEING OF SOUND MIND AND BODY will hit DVD on November 23 courtesy of Kultur Home Video.  Many fans have been wanting to see this special on DVD and it has finally arrived.  I have seen the special before and it is worth seeing.

BUY THE JOHN RITTER COMEDY SPECIAL FROM 1980 ON DVD FOR UNDER $11

My Review of this Special:
The legendary John Ritter had a comedy-variety special for ABC in May 1980 and you can now own it on DVD! John was with ABC at the time doing the fourth season of Three’s Company. John brings his comedic timing and physical comedy, along with his likeability in this wonderful rare special that has not been seen in many years. John joins forces with Hollywood’s finest in an hour full of fun and laughs.

There are six wonderful skits that will make you laugh and even cry. The first skit is “Movement is the Message” in which John’s character is bumbling man looking for ladies, and goes by a book. The next skit is “Fear Itself” in which John plays a nerdy theater manager who tries to stop some bullies. The next skit is a compilation of John in different costumes portraying a man’s entire life on video in, “Walter Simmons.” The next skit brings John’s physical comedy in “The Over-Reactor;” it features a man who overreacts after not getting passed airport security and turns into a werewolf. The next skit has John as a rock star who has gone down hill in but is trying to be revived in “The Rock Doctor.” The final skit portrays what John really is - a loving man, father and human being as John’s character has trouble putting a baby to sleep in “Sleep.”

Among John’s guest stars are Vincent Price and Suzanne Somers (“Movement is the Message”), Joyce DeWitt (“Fear Itself”), David Doyle (“The Over-Reactor”) and Howard Hesseman (“The Rock Dcotor”).

The packaging on this set is very good for a one disc set. There is just a case and no box. The case has a photo of John in a blue coat and dark blue/yellow shirt. It looks like a photo from 1978. 5 smaller photos are on the left side which features some shots of the special. The back of the case has a nice synopsis of the special and it has detailed information on the set. The case comes with a page of “Chapter Selections” so you know what titles and chapters the skits are on. The disc I have is a sample disc, so I don’t know what photo will be used for the public. I’m guessing the same photo of John from the cover will be on the disc.

The menu screen is neat. It has the same photos from the cover with the theme song from the special playing in the background. There are some clips from the special playing as well in the background. There are two options: “Play” & “Scene Selection.” Play of course plays the entire special without interruption. Scene selection goes by skits; it also has opening credits and closing credits.

The video and audio on this special is very good. This special has rarely been seen, so it is even more impressive. John’s production company Adam Productions was behind this special, along with many of John’s good friends like Robert M. Myman (who is John’s partner in Adam Productions), Joe Landon, Jack Bender and Three’s Company producers/directors/writers like Dave Powers, Gene Perret, and Bill Richmond. Comic Bruce Vilanch was also a writer for this special. The special is completely unedited from its original ABC airing at about 49-50 minutes in length. In the original airing, rehearsal footage was also included and is on this set as well. There is rehearsal footage before each skit. You can tell John is such a funny and wonderful person.

Unfortunately, there are no special features. I have this special on tape (thanks to Chris Mann!), and he sent me two bloopers from this special. One blooper is of John filming the opening credits. He comes on a bike at the studio lot with no shirt on and walks into the studio showing his butt. The other blooper is of John as Walter Simmons. He acts drunk and is killing himself. Again, these bloopers are NOT on this set. It would have been nice to have.

Overall, this set is excellent. All fans of John Ritter or Three’s Company should DEFINTATELY buy this set. This is a gem of a special and it is very rare. John’s comic timing is extraordinary and will be missed dearly. We lost John way too soon, so buy this set and dedicate it to him.

THREE’S COMPANY delighted audiences and defied critics as it tripped, tittered and jiggled its way to record ratings and pop culture paradise in its third season in fall 1978 to spring 1979. A then- controversial media sensation, this breakthrough bedroom farce brought the sexual revolution to primetime and made provocative dialogue, mixed-singles, misunderstandings and slapstick shtick a recipe for funny. More than twenty-five years later, this ’70s-style comedy of errors remains a timeless TV classic.

Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning John Ritter stars as the agile and affable Jack Tripper, roommate and friend to earthy brunette Janet Wood (Joyce DeWitt) and spacey blonde Chrissy Snow (Suzanne Somers).

In season three, the roomies’ battle of the sexes reaches disco fever pitch as Jack double dates two gals, Janet bares her soul (and then some) for a nude beach demonstration, and Chrissy falls under the spell of a hairy-chested svengali in guru clothing. Downstairs, landlord Stanley Roper (Golden Globe- winning Norman Fell) remains suspicious of Jack’s claim to be gay to live with two girls, while Stanley’s affection-starved wife, Helen (Audra Lindley), can only dream of hanky panky. And upstairs, party- streaking ladies man Larry Dallas (Richard Kline) lures Jack into all kinds of hijinx and hysteria at The Regal Beagle and beyond.

THREE’S COMPANY - SEASON THREE features all 22 original episodes of this sitcom’s classic third season - as well as the never-before-seen second pilot shot before Suzanne Somers was cast. This DVD also includes never-aired bloopers, behind-the-scenes audio commentary, and very special interviews hosted by Joyce DeWitt and featuring Richard Kline and director Dave Powers. Co-stars Don Knotts, Jenilee Harrison, Ann Wedgeworth and others also fondly remember the late John Ritter.

Anchor Bay Entertainment is pleased to announce the DVD release of Three's Company Season Three on November 2, 2004.  The series starred the legendary John Ritter as Jack Tripper, the enduring Joyce DeWitt as Janet Wood and the hilarious Suzanne Somers as Chrissy Snow.  New to DVD, the set will include 22 full-length episodes and carry a SRP of $39.98.

Three’s Company Season Three originally aired from 1978 to 1979 on ABC.  It was during this season that the show became a pop culture icon securing its place as number one in the Nielsen Ratings.  Set in Santa Monica, CA, the show follows the lovable bachelor Jack Tripper as he attempts to live platonically with his two female roommates, all the
while pretending that he is gay in order to placate Mr. Roper, his meddlesome landlord.

MY REVIEW: (On Sale November 2)

It was the TV season of 1978-79 and Three’s Company was in its third season and a top of the Nielsen Ratings for the entire season.  ABC Tuesdays was the highest rated night on all of television with other hits like Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley, joining Three’s Company.  Now, for the first time, bring home that season of Three’s Company on DVD on November 2!  Starring John Ritter, Joyce DeWitt, Suzanne Somers, Norman Fell, Audra Lindley and Richard Kline.

Get funky with that new disco type theme song because this set is a must for any fan.  There are twenty-two episodes on this set.  They did not include the two The Ropers episodes that air as Three’s Company episodes.  That could spell good news, as that series could have its own DVD set!  Let’s hope that happens!  This set, like season two, has a potpourri of extras that will leave you in complete satisfaction.   I will go over them in detail later on. I’m an avid fan of the series and endure every episode, but this season stands out for me.

The packaging is nicely packaged in Digibook format, just like season two. So when you open the case, you flip to the next CD like you would with a book. The color scheme for this season is red.  Season two was purple, if you all remember. Like season two, you have to remove the case from the box. The box cover features a nice cast photo of the trio, The Ropers and Larry.  The back of the box has information on the series, set & special features and a photo of Janet on the left and Chrissy & Jack on the right.  The case cover has a nice photo of Chrissy, Jack and Janet all dressed up in fancy clothing.  When you open the case, you will be greeted with a photo of the trio in a beach background and a nice message from Chris Mann, author of Come and Knock on Our Door, and a good buddy of mine.  He has surely pleased all fans of this series with his dedication and hard work.  I’d like to accommodate him once more on making these DVD sets perfect.  His message continues on the back of the case, as well.  His writing was on the case for season two as well.  So expect something like that.  A photo from the trio from “The Bake-Off” episode is on the back of the case.  Mann’s message is a must read as he explains the show very well.  The discs are in the case, of course, with disc one containing episodes 1-6 and has a photo of Jack (looks like it’s from season seven to me!), disc two features episodes 7-12 and a photo of Janet (looks like it’s from season two?).  Disc three has episodes 13-18 and a photo of Chrissy (looks like it is from season four?).  Finally, disc four has episodes 19-22 and the extras, with a photo of Larry on the disc.  When you remove disc four from the case, you can see a photo of The Ropers.

Now to the menu navigation – it is very similar in style to season two’s set.  Basically everything is, and we all know season two was a perfect set.  The season three theme song is playing in the background, while you make your choice.  And rotating images of Jack, Chrissy and the rest are in the background.  Discs one through three have the options of “Play All” and “Episodes.”  When you select episodes, you will go to an episode index screen where you can choose what episode you want.  When you choose an episode, you get a pretty decent episode synopsis, about a paragraph or so in length, and an image from the episode.  Then you hit play and the episode plays in its full unedited form just like how it aired on ABC.  Each episode is about 25-26 minutes long, counting the opening and closing credits.  Disc four has the same two options and the “Extras” option.  When you select extras, you go to the extras index where you can choose what extras you want to view.  The instrumental theme from season three’s opening theme is playing in the background.  Again, I will get to the extras shortly.  So get your eyes ready to be stunned!  My one complaint about this set is that this set has no scene selections or chapters.  So, it is very hard to find a scene you want to watch in particular.  Hopefully they add that feature in season four and beyond.

The video and audio quality is very crisp and clear for 1978-79. All the episodes are unedited and in the 25-26 minute ranges, as I previously stated. Like season two, there are some tag scenes from a few episodes that have probably never been seen since its original run, unless you are from an outside country. Every single episode has the full season three theme song, which feature the clips from season two. The video is very watch able and the audio is very clear, even though it is in mono.  It is the best mono on a DVD set probably out there.

Now for the extras!  The extras make DVD sets for classic TV series, somewhat “new.”  All of the extras are located on the fourth disc.  The first extra is the “Second Pilot Episode.”  It runs under 26 minutes.  It has the same audio theme as the first unaired pilot which was on the season two DVD set.  The video from the opening theme has the trio on the couch.  This second pilot is similar to episode #2 from the series, “Chrissy’s Mother.”  In this second pilot, Susan Lanier is playing Chrissy.  Suzanne Somers was not cast until the third pilot, which was a rework of the first pilot.  And that third pilot is the real first episode we all have seen and loved.  Joyce DeWitt is now cast in this second pilot as Janet.  Only John Ritter, Norman Fell and Audra Lindley return from the first pilot.  Strangely, this second pilot has no closing credits.  So, they used the generic closing credits from season two.  Chrissy’s mother in this pilot was played by a different actress it seems, but we will never know who it was, since there are no closing credits.

The next extra is a four minute tribute to John Ritter titled, “Remembering John Ritter.”  It is introduced by Joyce DeWitt and features interviews with Ann Wedgeworth, Jenilee Harrison, Don Knotts, Producer George Sunga, Writer Kim Weiskoph, Producer George Burditt and Richard Kline.  I think all of the future sets will have a “Remembering John Ritter” piece.  Hopefully we get more co-stars, crew and John’s family members in future sets.

Next, is “Audio Commentary” from Chris Mann on the episode, “The Bake-Off.”  He did audio commentary on the season two set and once again does a great job talking about the episode, show and other useful information.  He gives a lot of behind the scenes info for this 25 minute and 15 seconds episode.  I won’t spoil and tell you everything he said, but he talks about William Pierson, who plays Dean Travers, and this was Pierson’s favorite episode.  He also talks about Dave Powers, the lead director for seasons 3-8.

The next bonus material is “Original Promos.”  These are fun to see!  I wish there were more, because there are only three on this set.  The first one is about 30 seconds and John Ritter hosts from the set of Three’s Company.  The second one is also about 30 seconds hosted by John.  These two promos were created when Three’s Company was entering syndication in season 5, around 1982.  So, really this should be called syndication promos, rather than original promos.  The last promo is different takes that John did for Three’s Company on TBS in 1992.  TBS was Three’s Company’s first cable run, from 1992-99.  After that the show has been seen on the Viacom networks TV Land and Nick at Nite.  This promo lasts a little over one minute.  I like that they included these, but I would like to also see some original promos from the original ABC run.

Next up is the “Richard Kline Interview.”  It is over 19 minutes and 30 seconds long and is hosted by Joyce DeWitt.  ‘Richy’ talks about how he got the role. He talks about Bea Arthur and his stint on Maude.  Larry’s hairstyle, gold chains, singing and more are also talked about.  Richard also talks about John, Norman and Dave Powers and he gives advice on how to act drunk, as he did in a season six episode.  He then talks about various episodes that were famous for “Larry.”  Some episodes he mentioned are “Larry’s Bride,” “Jack Bares All,” “Eleanor’s Return” and “The Older Woman.”  Finally, a clip of the John Ritter TBS promo with the premiere date and time is shown and Richard talks about the show’s success in syndication in the early years and today on Nick at Nite and TV Land.

The next interview is the “Dave Powers Interview.”  It is just over 20 minutes long and once again your host is Joyce DeWitt.  Dave joined the series in season three and brought a lot of physical comedy on to the show.  He talks about coming in from The Carol Burnett Show into Three’s Company. He talks about John and how wonderful he was.  He mentioned that he called the trio children and they called him teacher.  The show was like a play he mentioned.  Then he talks about some of the actors like Audra and how good she was, Norman’s camera mug, bringing in Don Knotts after The Ropers moved on to their own series, Suzanne and Joyce.

The next four pieces are “Best of…” clips.  “Best of Jack – Season Three” has clips of Jack from this season and runs under 5 minutes.  “Best of Chrissy – Season Three” has clips of Chrissy from this season and runs over 6 minutes.  “Best of Janet – Season Three” has clips of Janet from this season and runs over 5 minutes.  “Best of The Ropers – Season Three” has clips of them from this season and runs over 6 minutes.  And the final extra is “Bloopers Part Two.”  It runs over 12 minutes and 30 second long.  It has the same actor introductions that we saw in “Bloopers Part One” from the season two set.  The bloopers are primarily more from season two.  Hopefully we get bloopers on every upcoming set.

I really enjoyed this set.  It is nice watching the episodes in their entirety instead of the chopped up versions we see on TV today.  The extras are a bonus and a joy to watch.  Season four is tentatively slated for May, 2005.  Hopefully we get The Ropers Complete Series set around that time or maybe even before that.  I have a feeling we will get BOTH spin-offs on DVD eventually.  I hope Anchor Bay continues this great pattern of making wonderful DVD sets and fix the minor errors, like adding scene selections and/or chapters.  Other than that, I am very happy with these sets and I am sure all fans are as well, and will buy this set so we can get all eight seasons and the spin-offs on our home entertainment shelves!

THREE’S COMPANY knocked and a welcoming audience threw open its doors — right smack into Jack Tripper’s face. This co-ed comedy of errors about a clumsy bachelor living with two girls left America in stitches as the number-one rated entertainment show in 1979-80, while making its starring roommates household names. Dismissed by critics as a one-joke show, this once- controversial bedroom farce built a house of slapstick fun and friendship on its “risqué” foundation. And millions of viewers welcomed the madcap mixed-singles family and their wacky neighbors into their homes each week. Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning John Ritter stars as the hilariously accident-prone chef Jack Tripper, roommate to perky florist Janet Wood (Joyce DeWitt) and bubble- headed secretary Chrissy Snow (Suzanne Somers). In season four, the roomies encounter life-and-death misunderstandings and an endless array of polyester leisure suits as legendary comedic actor Don Knotts joins the show as new landlord/ladies man Ralph Furley. Spastic and elastic, the rubber-faced Mr. Furley freaks at the thought of a virile man “getting it on” with two young women in his apartment building. So Jack has to keep pretending to be gay to stay in his already-platonic cohabitation. Ann Wedgeworth also moves into the apartment building this year as the mature-but-sexy divorcée Lana Shields, who struggles to avoid “Happy Cooker” Furley while desperately trying to get her hands on Jack’s pot roast. Richard Kline’s Larry Dallas remains a trouble-instigating best bud to Jack, who finds himself cross-dressing, playing strip poker and mastering sitcom hammock spills and thrills in this schtick-filled year. THREE’S COMPANY — SEASON FOUR features all 25 episodes of this sitcom’s classic fourth season — new interviews with show producers and writers are included, as well as interviews with co-stars Don Knotts, Richard Kline and Ann Wedgeworth. Also included is an exclusive visit with John Ritter’s first wife, Nancy Morgan Ritter, hosted by Joyce DeWitt.

LIST OF EXTRAS for SEASON FOUR, on disc 4:

MY REVIEW: (On Sale May 3)

Three’s Company is knocking its way back to your DVD player for the fourth time, in season four! Join Jack, Janet, Chrissy, Larry and now Mr. Furley and Lana for more zany adventures. Replacing the Ropers, who went on to their own series, was huge, but Don Knotts as Mr. Furley was a perfect fit.  The 4th season stars John Ritter, Joyce DeWitt, Suzanne Somers, Richard Kline, Ann Wedgeworth and Don Knotts.  Head on over to your local Regal Beagle and celebrate the fourth season on DVD!

Join the gang at the Santa Monica Pier for fun for the new opening and closing credits.  There are some memorable season four episodes such as, “Jack on the Lam” where Jack thinks he is being chased by the FBI and goes into drag, “The New Landlord” where Mr. Furley moves in and is the new landlord, “Snow Job” is where Chrissy sells cosmetic products at Larry’s strip poker game, “A Camping We Will Go” is the one where they go camping, “Chrissy’s Hospitality” is where Chrissy bumps her head in the tub and is in the hospital, “Handcuffed” is where Jack & Chrissy get handcuffed, and “Jack’s Graduation” is where Jack graduates from cooking school.

Some famous guests to visit the series this season are: Dick O’Neill (“Jack on the Lam”) as Walter Nessle the man who thought Jack really was a woman, Joel Brooks (“Jack the Ripper” & “The Root of All Evil”) as Dr. Prescott, Pat O’Malley (“Old Folks at Home) as the old man who got on Jack’s nerves, Keene Curtis (“Chrissy’s Hospitality”) as Chrissy’s doctor and Joana Kerns (“The Love Lesson”) as Jack’s date who Mr. Furley thought was a transvestite . Returning characters include Peter Mark Richman (“The Reverend Steps Out”) as Chrissy’s minister father and William Pierson (“Jack the Ripper” & “Jack’s Graduation”) returns as Dean Travers.

The packaging is nicely packaged in Digibook format, just like seasons two & three. So when you open the case, you flip to the next disc like you would with a book. The color scheme for this season is green. Season two was purple and season three was red, if you all remember. Like the previous two sets, you have to remove the case from the box. The box cover features a nice cast photo of the trio, Mr. Furley, Larry and Lana. The back of the box has information on the series, set & special features and a photo of Jack on the left and Chrissy & Janet on the right. The case cover has a nice photo of the entire season four cast lying down on skates. When you open the case, you will be greeted with a photo of the trio in a beach background (looks like season 3 photo) and a nice message from Chris Mann, author of Come and Knock on Our Door, and a good buddy of mine. He has surely pleased all fans of this series with his dedication and hard work. I’d like to accommodate him once more on making these DVD sets perfect. His message continues on the back of the case, as well. His writing was on the case for the last two sets as well. So expect something like that. A photo of the trio from “Good Old Reliable Janet” episode is on the back of the case, which oddly is a season three episode. Mann’s message is a must read as he explains the show very well. Inside there is a coupon with information on how you save $10 with a mail-in rebate when you buy any TWO seasons of Three’s Company on DVD.

The discs are in the case, of course, with disc one containing episodes 1-6 and has a photo of Jack (season 4) in a blue background, disc two features episodes 7-12 and a photo of Janet (season four) in a red background. Disc three has episodes 13-18 and a photo of Chrissy (season four) in a purple background. Finally, disc four has episodes 19-22 and the extras, with a photo of Mr. Furley on the disc with an orange background. Finally they used photos from the right season on the discs. When you remove disc four from the case, you can see a nice loving photo of the trio.

Now to the menu navigation – it is very similar in style to the last two sets. The season four theme song is playing in the background, while you make your choice. And rotating images in little circles of Jack, Chrissy and the rest of the cast from season four are in the background. The options on the menu screen are: “Play All,” “Commentary” (disc two ONLY), “Extras” (disc four ONLY), and “Episodes.” When you select episodes, you will go to an episode index screen where you can choose what episode you want. When you choose an episode, you get a pretty decent episode synopsis, about a paragraph or so in length, and a screenshot from the episode. Then you hit play and the episode plays in its full unedited form just like how it aired on ABC. Each episode is about 24:30-25:30 minutes long, counting the opening and closing credits.  When you select “commentary” on disc two, you have the ability to turn the commentary by Chris Mann for the episode “Chrissy’s Hospitality” on or off.  When you select extras on disc four, you are at the extras index where you can choose what extras you want to view. I will get to the extras shortly. So get your eyes ready to be stunned ONCE AGAIN! My one complaint about this set continues to be that this set has no scene selections or chapters. So, it is very hard to find a scene you want to watch in particular. Hopefully they add that feature in an upcoming set, but they probably want to remain consistent and won’t.

The video and audio quality is very crisp and clear for 1979-80. All the episodes are unedited and in the 24:30-25:30 minute ranges, as I previously stated. Like seasons two and three, there are some tag scenes from a few episodes that have probably never been seen since its original run, unless you are from an outside country. Every single episode has the full season four theme song. The video is very watchable and the audio is very clear, even though it is in mono. It is the best mono on a DVD set probably out there.

Now for the extras!  The first piece of extra is located on disc two actually.  For seasons 2 and 3 all of the extras were on disc four, so this is somewhat unusual.  The extra on this disc is audio commentary by Chris Mann.  He comments on the classic episode “Chrissy’s Hospitality.”  For the last two sets he commented on one episode each, which was on disc four the last two seasons, so this time they didn’t waste space and included another version on disc four.  So this is a good move by Anchor Bay.  Well, anyway, some of the things that Chris talks about in this episode are the cast changes, opening credits, and one of the funniest scenes in the show’s history.  That scene is of course the scene with Jack & Chrissy fixing the showerhead in the tub, while Mr. Furley overhears something else.  He mentions this episode is written by Mark Tuttle, who joined the team this season.  The writing team of Michael S. Baser and Kim Weiskopf also joined the team this season, as some of the older writers either moved on or went to write for the spin-off, The Ropers.  He mentions the controversy of Suzanne & Joyce in pantyhose’s.   You’ll have to listen to him yourself to see what happened.  He also mentions that both Joyce & Suzanne love this episode, for different reasons.  Chris is so well informed that this is a much watch/listen for any fan.  I won’t spoil more of the things he said.  You’ll have to see for yourself!

The next extra is on disc four and runs 19:56 and is titled “Nancy Morgan Ritter Interview.” It is introduced by Joyce DeWitt, and Joyce gives a quick history of the couple, how they met, their wedding, and each of the three children’s birth.  The interview has a ton of cool rare photos of John & Nancy, especially from their wedding day. Nancy talks about John wanting to make people laugh and how he was a goofball.  She also mentions that John was very well informed, having conversations with him were very informative.  Mainly she talks about John and how funny he was and wanted to make people laugh.  She also mentions the friendship they had with Norman Fell and his wife Karen.  She was very sad that Norman left the show for his own spin-off, but getting Don Knotts was also good.  The letting go of Suzanne Somers also showed that Three’s Company was a business.  This is a very good interview.  This set so far has two must-sees.

Up next is the “Don Knotts & Richard Kline Interview.”  It runs 8:08 and they talk about how they got onto the show, John, Joyce, and more.  A clip from the Dave Powers interview from the last set is shown talking about Don Knotts and cue cards, you have to watch to see what I mean.  Richard & Don talk in detail about the scene where they played drunk (the season six episode “Paradise Lost”).  They mention that was probably the first time their characters had interacted with each other.  Other times they would just say, “Hi Mr. Furley … Hi, Larry.”  This is yet another interesting interview.

The next bonus material is the “Ann Wedgeworth Interview.”  It runs about 9:11.  It also has tons of clips and brief separate interviews with Kim Weiskopf (writer) and George Sunga (producer).  Ann talks about how great and funny John was, her storylines, and the episodes “Love They Neighbor” (her first show), “The New Landlord” (first show with Mr. Furley), and “A Camping We Will Go” (her favorite and written by Weiskopf).  Sunga & Weiskiopf mention that they loved Ann but they ran out of storylines for her.  She was great while she was there, but then they just didn’t have room for her.  Ann had a great time on the show and has only good things to say.  She even still looks like she did from 1980!

Next up is the feature “Casting Don Knotts.”  It runs 3:57 and features interviews with George Burditt (producer), George Sunga (producer) and Kim Weiskopf (writer).  This basically tells us how Don Knotts came about and how he was a perfect replacement for Norman Fell.  The next feature has the same people interviewed and is titled “Casting Suzanne Somers.”  It runs 3:29.  We find out how they came up with Suzanne.  They show some clips of Suzanne in a white background, I guess auditioning? They mention the two original Chrissy’s, including Susan Lanier.

The next five pieces are “Best of…” clips. “Best of Jack – Season Four” has clips of Jack from this season and runs 6:41 “Best of Chrissy – Season Four” has clips of Chrissy from this season and runs over 7:15. “Best of Janet – Season Four” has clips of Janet from this season and runs 6:37. “Best of Larry – Season Four” has clips of Larry from this season and runs 6:17.  “Best of Mr. Furley – Season Four” has clips of Furley from this season and runs 6:17.  These might be unnecessary, but I did like the Janet one because they had a shot of Joyce you’ll just have to see for yourself that was very rare.  It is right in the beginning, so you can’t miss it.

Again I really enjoyed this set.  Anchor Bay has done a remarkable job the last three seasons.  The special features are high class and hopefully seasons 5-8 are on the same par, if not better.  We are now halfway through our Three’s Company collection.  Now we also need both spin-offs on DVD.  What could be a good sign is that, there was supposed to be an interview with Patricia McCormack (Ann from “The Ropers”) on this set, but that was scratched.  Could this mean that was moved for an upcoming “The Ropers” set?  I hope so!  Anchor Bay has already mentioned that season 5 of Three’s Company is coming October 4.  About 5 months away.  So for now, enjoy season four on DVD and start saving up for season 5 & beyond and maybe even the spin-offs!

PRESS RELEASE:

“MR. FURLEY” KNOCKS ON THE DOOR!
4/26/2005

TROY, MI -- On May 3, Mr. Furley finally knocks on the threesome’s door when Anchor Bay Entertainment releases the Three’s Company Season Four DVD Box Set, available for $39.98 SRP (pre-order date is April 5). During this particular season, Don Knotts joined the cast as “Ralph Furley,” their crazy, outlandish new landlord. Packed with all 25 full-length episodes, the DVD set features 4 discs with more than ten hours of sexual innuendo and miscommunication-driven content! Season Four also has a $10.00 mail-in rebate when you purchase any other season as well.

The Three’s Company Season Four DVD Box Set features fun bonus materials including rare, behind-the-scenes commentary and new interviews with Don Knotts, Ann Wedgeworth and show producers and writers. In addition, Roper’s spin-off co-star, Patty McCormack gives some insight into working with Norman Fell and Audra Lindley. The box set also includes a special exclusive visit with John Ritter’s first wife, Nancy Morgan Ritter – hosted by Joyce DeWitt, and hilarious “best of season four” compilations focusing on Jack, Janet, Chrissy, Larry and Furley.

Three’s Company Season Four originally aired from 1979 – 1980 on ABC. Set in Santa Monica, CA, the show follows the lovable bachelor Jack Tripper as he attempts to live platonically with his two female roommates, all the while pretending that he is gay in order to placate Mr. Furley, his meddlesome landlord. The show won the hearts of its audience with comical misunderstandings, slapstick shtick, Ritter’s physical comedy talents and the cast’s overall likeability.

Three’s Company originated from the Thames Television comedy series, “Man About the House.” The concept was brought to the U.S. in the late 70’s by DLT Entertainment Ltd., an independent producer and distributor of television programming worldwide. The show was pitched to all three networks, but each turned it down. A few years passed before ABC contacted DLT founder Don Taffner and gave the green light for a pilot. Over one year and three pilots later, the first episode of Three’s Company aired on March 15, 1977.
more

The cast was formed to include John Ritter as Jack Tripper, Joyce DeWitt as Janet Wood and Suzanne Somers as Chrissy Snow. John Ritter was cast in the first round of auditions but Joyce DeWitt and Suzanne Somers were not the original Janet and Chrissy. Then-ABC programming executive Michael Eisner stepped in and suggested new girls be cast in those roles. DeWitt got the role of Janet and Somers got the role of Chrissy after two other actresses cast as Chrissy did not seem to embody the character. Eisner also played an instrumental role in the casting of Norman Fell and Audra Lindley as the original nosy landlords, Mr. and Mrs. Roper. Three’s Company became one of the highest-rated television shows ever and continues to be a worldwide favorite. The series is still shown regularly on TV Land and the Nick at Nite cable network where it is one of the network’s highest rated programs.

MY REVIEW (Nov. 3 -- on sale Nov. 15):

Testing uno, dos, tres, catorce… yes, Three’s Company is back on DVD with season five! Join Jack, Janet, Chrissy, Larry, Mr. Furley, and a new character—Cindy for some fun farce! This is the season where Suzanne Somers’ Chrissy Snow leaves the show but would appear in a few phone tag scenes, so they brought in Jenilee Harrison to play the role of third roommate Cindy Show, Chrissy’s cousin. You for sure want to buy this pivotal season on DVD!

The fifth season stars John Ritter as Jack Tripper, Joyce DeWitt as Janet Wood, Suzanne Somers as Chrissy Snow, Richard Kline as Larry Dallas, with Jenilee Harrison as Cindy Snow and Don Knotts as Mr. Furley!

This classic fifth season had it all. For a few episodes it was ‘two’s company’ when Chrissy was away and Jack & Janet carried the show. Those episodes were “…And Justice for Jack,” “Downhill Chaser,” “A Crowded Romance,” and “Room at the Bottom.” Without Chrissy in those episodes, Janet’s character evolved a lot and showed how much of a good physical comedian Joyce DeWitt was as well. She worked great with John Ritter. There were only two full episodes with Chrissy this season, but they were both very good. “Upstairs, Downstairs, Upstairs” and “A Hundred Dollars a What?” were the episodes. After all that, Jenilee Harrison’s character Cindy moves in, in the episode “Chrissy’s Cousin.” All of those were pivotal and episodes that changed Three’s Company historically, but there were other great episodes as well, including “Make Room for Daddy” in which Janet takes out an older man, “Janet’s Secret” in which Janet’s parents come for a visit, “In Like Larry” in which Jack and Larry switch apartments, “Night of the Ropers” has the hilarious Ropers coming back for one last time, and “Double Trouble” in which Jack poses as his own twin cousin Austin from Texas.

There were many familiar faces guest starring this season as well. Ellen Travolta sexually harasses Jack in “…And Justice for Jack,” Elaine Giftos is Chrissy’s call girl friend in “A Hundred Dollars a What,” Gino Conforti & Jordan Charney make their first appearances as Felipe and Mr. Angelino in “The Not So Great Imposter,” the late Keene Curtis as Janet’s older date in “Make Room for Daddy,” Macon McCalman as Janet’s father in “Janet’s Secret,” special guest star Jeffrey Tambor wants to marry Cindy in “Father of the Bride,” the late Hamilton Camp plays Bart Furley in “Furley vs. Furley,” William Pierson returns for one last time as Dean Travers in “Teacher’s Pet,” Norman Fell & Audra Lindley reprise their roles as The Ropers in “Night of the Ropers,” and Terry Kiser wants to kill Jack in “Dying to Meet You.” Brad Blaisdell has a recurring role as Mike, the bartender at the Regal Beagle.

The packaging is nicely packaged in Digibook format, just like seasons two through four. So when you open the case, you flip to the next disc like you would with a book. The color scheme for this season is a pink type of color. Season two was purple, season three was red, and season four was green if you all remember. Like the previous three sets, you have to remove the case from the box. The box cover features a nice cast photo of the trio (Jack, Janet, and Chrissy that is) in a nice pose. The back of the box has information on the series, set & special features and a photo of Jack holding Chrissy’s cheeks on the left and Cindy & Janet on the right. The case cover this time is the same as the box cover. The last three sets had a different photo from the box cover. When you open the case, you will be greeted with a nice photo of Jenilee Harrison’s Cindy and a nice message/synopsis from George Sunga, a producer on the show. Unfortunately, the great Chris Mann was not involved in this release and seems like he will not be involved for seasons 6 through 8 either, which is very unfortunate. Sunga’s message/synopsis continues on the back of the case, as well. A photo of the Janet, Jack, and Cindy sitting on the couch is on the back of the case.

The discs are in the case, of course, with disc one containing episodes 1-6 and has a photo of Jack (season 8 it seems) in a blue background, disc two features episodes 7-12 and a photo of Janet (season three it seems) in a red background. Disc three has episodes 13-18 and a photo of Chrissy (season four it seems) in a purple background. Finally, disc four has episodes 19-22 and the extras, with a photo of Cindy on the disc with an orange background. When you remove disc four from the case, you can see a nice loving photo of the trio—but it is a season four shot.

Now to the menu navigation it is very similar in style to the last three sets. The season four & five theme song is playing in the background. And rotating images in little circles of Jack, Janet, Chrissy, Larry and Mr. Furley from season five are in the background. The options on the menu screen are: “Play All,” “Extras” (disc four ONLY), and “Episodes.” When you select episodes, you will go to an episode index screen where you can choose what episode you want. When you choose an episode, you get a pretty decent episode synopsis, about a paragraph or so in length, and a screenshot from the episode. Then you hit play and the episode plays in its full unedited form just like how it aired on ABC. Each episode is about 25:05 minutes long, counting the opening and closing credits. My one complaint about the Three’s Company sets was that there were no chapters. They made a little improvement for this season! They added a chapter break after the opening credits, so you can skip over the theme anytime. But still no chapter breaks where the commercials would be. So, it is very hard to find a scene you want to watch in particular. Hopefully they build on what they did this season and more chapter stops for the final three seasons.

The video and audio quality is very crisp and clear for 1980-81. All the episodes are unedited and in the 25:05 minute range, as I previously stated. Like seasons two through four, there are some tag scenes from a few episodes that have probably never been seen since its original run, unless you are from an outside country. This means all the Chrissy phone tags are on this set, if anyone was wondering! Want to find them fast? Here are the episodes where she appears at the end for a phone scene: “Jack to the Rescue,” “Jack’s Other Mother,” “Make Room for Daddy,” “Father of the Bride,” “In Like Larry,” and “And Baby Makes Four.” Chrissy talks to Janet in all of them except for “Make Room for Daddy” in which she talks to Jack. All of these episodes are on discs two and three. There is an episode on disc one titled “Room at the Bottom” that had a Chrissy phone scene, but it was not at the end of the episode, it was in the middle of the episode. Every single episode has the full season five theme song. The video is very watchable and the audio is very clear, even though it is in mono. It is the best mono on a DVD set probably out there.

Are you ready for some bonus material fun? Anchor Bay has always provided us with great extras! This season has not as many extras but they are still worth watching and interesting to see. All of the extras are on disc four. The first extra is an interview with Jenilee Harrison. It runs about 9:23 in length. She goes in-depth on how she got the job. She said the show made her career and she says she beat out other actresses such as Heather Locklear, Heather Thomas and Tracy Scoggins! She also talks about her departure after the sixth season. This is a must watch.

Up next is the feature “Of Farce & Censors.” It runs 9:37 and has interviews with producers and writers Kim Weiskopf, George Sunga and George Burditt. They talk about the hilarious misunderstandings, the great farce and how they adapted to writing it, and how the censors played out. They talk about co-executive producer Don Nicholl, too. Nicholl died in 1980, just before the fifth season. This is yet another interesting interview.

The next five pieces are “Best of…” clips. “Best of Jack Season Five” has clips of Jack from this season and runs 8:33; “Best of Janet Season Five” has clips of Janet from this season and runs 8:04. “Best of Cindy Season Five” has clips of Cindy from this season and runs 6:32. “Best of Larry Season Five” has clips of Larry from this season and runs 8:32. “Best of Mr. Furley Season Five” has clips of Furley from this season and runs 8:27. These might be unnecessary, but it is nice to watch the best clips from the season in one showing.

Yet again Anchor Bay doesn’t disappoint! The set is well done and sort of fixed the chapter issue, but still needs work. The extras were good but the quantity was down, the quality is still right up there. All fans should buy this set and continue to buy this series on DVD. Season 6 is slated for March 7, 2006, with seasons 7 and 8 following later in 2006. Come on Anchor Bay, bring on the spin-offs, too, and us fans will love you even more! Season 5 is a must buy!

PRESS RELEASE:

They’ve Been Waiting For You!

ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS
THREE’S COMPANY SEASON FIVE ON DVD

The Best Season Ever Will Be Knocking On Your Door November 15!

TROY, MI – On November 15th a pop icon returns! Anchor Bay Entertainment brings to DVD the long-awaited Three’s Company Season Five. The fifth season of this hilarious, award-winning series will be available as a 4-disc DVD set for the suggested retail price of $39.98 and boasts all-new interviews and season highlights reels for each starring character, specially produced for this release.

“Three’s Company” was created by Johnnie Mortimer and Brian Cooke, writers for the original Thames Television version, “Man About The House.” Loved by fans around the world for its combination of naiveté and double entendres, the idea was brought to the U.S. by DLT Entertainment Ltd., an independent producer and distributor of television programming worldwide. A few years passed before ABC contacted DLT founder Don Taffner and gave the OK for a pilot. “Three’s Company” premiered on ABC in 1977 and quickly became one of the network’s top rated programs, frequently appearing in the Nielsen Top Ten.

The simple but provocative premise of “Three’s Company” finds Jack Tripper (John Ritter – “8 Simple Rules”, Bad Santa), a local student sharing – for purely economical reasons – an apartment with two girls: sharp-witted Janet Wood (Joyce DeWitt – Airplane II, “The Love Boat”) and clumsy but endearing Cindy Snow (show newcomer Jenilee Harrison – “Dallas”). The arrangement seems ideal, except for one obstacle: their fussy landlord Mr. Furley (Don Knotts, in his first full season on the show – “The Andy Griffith Show”, It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World). The only way to ease Mr. Furley’s suspicions is for Jack to pretend that he’s gay. With such a scheme, this comedy was sure to go where no sitcom had gone before!

Three’s Company Season Five is considered by many fans to be the series’ best season, even though it was Suzanne Somers’ final season with the show (her character moved back home, but still appeared at the end of each program, phoning in to get the news of the day). Season Five contains more of the situations which, when first aired, brought smiles to its viewers while at the same time raising more than a few eyebrows.

Anchor Bay Entertainment dug deep into the vaults to create an impressive lineup of bonus features ready to introduce a new generation of fans to the classic characters of Three’s Company Season Five:

• All-New Jenilee Harrison Interview
• Of Farce And Censors: All-New Interviews With
Producers George Sunga & George Burditt and Writer Kim Weiskopf
• Best of Jack: Season Five
• Best of Janet: Season Five
• Best of Cindy: Season Five
• Best of Larry: Season Five
• Best of Furley: Season Five

Besides its already renowned cast, (John Ritter garnered an Emmy, Golden Globe and a People’s Choice award for his role as Jack Tripper), Three’s Company Season Five showcased the comedic talents of such special guest stars as Jeffrey Tambor (Hellboy, “Arrested Development”), Hamilton Camp (“Titus”, “Desperate Housewives”) and Ellen Travolta (John’s sister – “Happy Days”, “General Hospital”).

During its eight year run, the show was cited for its lightheartedness and risqué humor, a then-daring combination for an American situation comedy. Breaking taboos with its principal unmarried characters living together, “Three’s Company” made a lasting impression by defining and celebrating the cultural and lifestyle changes of the ‘70s and ‘80s.

MY REVIEW (February 25, 2006 -- on sale March 7):

The trio is back and they are looking for a new roommate! Cindy is off to college at UCLA and Jack and Janet are looking for someone else to help play for the rent. They find Nurse Terri Alden (Priscilla Barnes). So pick up the sixth season of Three’s Company on DVD for more fun and laughs, this time with a new roommate and for $10 less than the previous four sets!

The sixth season stars John Ritter as Jack Tripper, Joyce DeWitt as Janet Wood, Priscilla Barnes as Terri Alden, Richard Kline as Larry Dallas, with Jenilee Harrison as Cindy Snow and Don Knotts as Mr. Furley!

This memorable sixth season had it all. Some stand-out episodes include “Jack Bares All” where they meet Terri Alden, “Professor Jack” where Terri thinks Jack is giving lovemaking lessons instead of cooking lessons to a much older lady, “Some of that Jazz” is the one where Janet thinks she can make it as a dancer but her dance teacher is a total letch, “Two Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” has Terri bringing a psychiatrist home and Jack & Janet think he is a mental patient, “Boy Meets Dummy” is the one where Jack has to stay away from Angelino’s daughter so he pretends a CPR dummy is his wife, “Urban Plowboy” in which the gang go out to Cindy’s aunt’s farm, “And Now Here’s Jack” is the one where Jack is on a morning show cooking and all goes wrong, “Up in the Air” is the one where Jack goes crazy at a part on a remote island, and “Mate for Each Other” is the one where a computer sets up Jack & Janet for a date!

There were many familiar faces guest starring this season as well. Gino Conforti & Jordan Charney join the cast a recurring characters as Felipe and Mr. Angelino, Michael Bell plays Janet’s dance teacher in “Some of that Jazz,” Teresa Ganzel as Greedy Gretchen in “Lies My Roommate Told Me,” special guest star Jeffrey Tambor is a psychiatrist in “Two Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” Ruta Lee as the gold-digger in “The Matchbreakers,” Terry Kiser as a mobster who is hard to please in “A Friend in Need,” Karen Austin wants to change Jack in “Jack’s 10,” and Barry Williams in the hilarious episode “Up in the Air.” Brad Blaisdell has a recurring role as Mike, the bartender at the Regal Beagle.

The packaging is nicely packaged in Digibook format, just like seasons two through five. So when you open the case, you flip to the next disc like you would with a book. The color scheme for this season is yellow. Season two was purple, season three was red, and season four was green, season five was light pinkish, if you all remember. Like the previous three sets, you have to remove the case from the box. The box cover features a nice cast photo of Larry, Cindy, Mr. Furley, Terri, Jack and Janet in a nice pose. The back of the box has information on the series, set & special features and a photo of Jack, Janet, Teri and Mr. Furley on the couch watching TV. There is also a photo of Janet from what looks to be season three, which is so strange because there is a photo of Janet already on the couch. The case cover has a nice photo of Janet, Jack and a sexy Terri. When you open the case, you will be greeted with a nice photo of Terri, Jack and Janet on the couch and a nice message/synopsis from George Sunga, a producer on the show. Sunga’s message/synopsis continues on the back of the case, as well. A photo of the Janet opening the door for Larry and one of his many girlfriends is on the back of the case as well.

The discs are in the case, of course, with disc one containing episodes 1-6 and has a photo of Jack in a blue background, disc two features episodes 7-13 and a photo of Janet in a pink background. Disc three has episodes 14-20 and a photo of Terri in a yellow background. Finally, disc four has episodes 21-25 and the extras, with a photo of Cindy on the disc with a light purple background. When you remove disc four from the case, you can see a nice loving photo of the trio and Cindy in the apartment.

Now to the menu navigation--it is very similar in style to the last four sets. The full season six theme song is playing in the background. And rotating images in little circles of Jack, Terri, Janet, Larry, Cindy and Mr. Furley from season six are in the background. They made a little improvement for this season and season five, though. They added a chapter break after the opening credits, so you can skip over the theme anytime. But still no chapter breaks where the commercials would be. So, it is very hard to find a scene you want to watch in particular. Hopefully they build on what they did this season and add more chapter stops for the final two seasons.

The video and audio quality is very crisp and clear for 1981-82. All the episodes are unedited and in the 25:05 minute range, as I previously stated. Like seasons two through five, there are some tag scenes from a few episodes that have probably never been seen since its original run, unless you are from an outside country. Every single episode has the full season six theme song. The video is very watchable and the audio is very clear, even though it is in mono. It is the best mono on a DVD set probably out there. For some reason the bumpers for the intermission of “Jack Bares All” and “The Best of Three’s Company” are missing. They are both intact on the ThreesCompany.com VHS tapes, but not on this DVD. It’s not a big deal, but still would have been nice to have. Here are the bumpers: Jack Bares All – http://www.sitcomsonline.com/videoclips/threes_company6_opener_bumper.mpg
The Best of Three’s Company - http://www.sitcomsonline.com/videoclips/threes_company_BestofTC_bumper.wmv

Are you ready for some bonus material fun? The set has audio commentary on disc one with director Dave Powers on the one-hour episode “Jack Bares All.” He is very interesting to listen to. He gives great tidbits, insights and facts. He gives a great analysis of the new opening credits that started in season 6. The episode runs close to 49 minutes. Then we have a sort of bonus feature on disc four with the “Best of Three’s Company” episode by the great Lucille Ball. This episode is always seen in syndication, so it is not a real special feature, but is great to have of course. The episode runs 48 minutes. But for some reason the full end credits don’t seem to be there? You can watch the full ending credits here: http://www.sitcomsonline.com/videoclips/threes_company_BestofTC_end_original.wmv

The final extra is also on disc four and is a featurette on the show’s popularity internationally. “Laughs Around the World: Episode in Polish Featurette” runs around 8 minutes and is introduced by producer George Sunga. He mentions the show did very well in international areas. They aired the show with dubbed voices or they made their own version with different actors, same scripts, such as in Poland in the late ‘90s. The featurette shows bits of the U.S. version of the season six episode “Paradise Lost” intercut with the Polish version. It is very interesting to see!

While this set is not on par with the previous sets, it is still very good. The set is well done and all the episodes are unedited (which is all that really counts) and in great quality. The extras were good but the quality was down. All fans should buy this set and continue to buy this series on DVD. Season 7 is slated for July 25, 2006; with season 8 following in fall 2006. Come on Anchor Bay, bring on the spin-offs, too, and us fans will love you even more! Season 6 is a must buy as Three’s Company entered its final phase with Terri.

LIST OF EXTRAS for SEASON SEVEN:

MY REVIEW (July 5 -- on sale July 25):

Jack, Janet, Terri, Larry and Mr. Furley are all back for another zany and wild season on the seventh season of Three’s Company now available for the first time on DVD from Anchor Bay Home Entertainment! In this hit season, Jack finally achieves his dream and opens up his own restaurant – Jack’s Bistro! The season 7 DVD was being produced at the time of Don Knotts’ passing, and Anchor Bay has paid tribute to him on this set. And just like the season six Three’s Company DVD, for $10 less than the previous four sets!

The seventh season stars John Ritter as Jack Tripper, Joyce DeWitt as Janet Wood, Priscilla Barnes as Terri Alden, Richard Kline as Larry Dallas and Don Knotts as Mr. Furley!

This memorable seventh season had it all. The set was moved from CBS Television City to Metromedia, and thus you’ll notice some better lighting on the set, at least that is what I think. Some stand-out episodes include “A Night Not to Remember” where Jack gets drunk and does something bad…or he thinks he does, “Jack Goes to the Dentist” where Terri’s boyfriend (played by Jeffrey Tambor) is a dentist, “Diamond Jack” is the one where jewel thieves accidentally find Jack, “Jack Gets His” is a landmark episode where Jack finally achieves his dream, “Opening Night” is the one where Jack has his grand opening, “Cousin Cuisine” is the one where the Spanish speaking Maria comes into Jack’s life, “The Impossible Dream” is the one where Larry sings at the Bistro and Furley helps out in the kitchen, “Going to Pot” is the one where Furley brings a pot…not that kind, and “The Apartment” is the one where Angelino is caught having a secret love next in the apartment above the Bistro!

There were many familiar faces guest starring this season as well. Gino Conforti & Jordan Charney as recurring characters as Felipe and Mr. Angelino, Jeffrey Tambor plays Terri’s dentist-boyfriend in “Jack Goes to the Dentist,” Anne Schedeen as the loan manager at the bank in “Jack Gets His,” Earl Boen is the Reverend Gilmore in “The Brunch,” veteran Irene Tedrow also guest stars in “The Brunch,” Brian Robbins as Furley’s shy nephew in “Janet’s Little Helper,” Julie Piekarski as the teenage candy-striper in “Janet’s Little Helper,” and Ilene Graff is Angelino’s other woman in “The Apartment.” Brad Blaisdell has a recurring role as Mike, the bartender at the Regal Beagle and Mina Kolb appears as Terri’s mother, Mrs. Alden for two episodes.

The packaging is nicely packaged in Digibook format, just like seasons two through six. So when you open the case, you flip to the next disc like you would with a book. The color scheme for this season is orange. Season two was purple, season three was red, season four was green, season five was light pinkish and season six was yellow, if you all remember. Like the previous three sets, you have to remove the case from the box. The box cover features a nice cast photo of Janet, Jack, Mr. Furley and Terri in a nice pose. It is the same photo that was used on the case for season six, but Mr. Furley was added this time. The back of the box has information on the series, set & special features and a photo of Jack, Janet, Teri and Mr. Furley on the couch talking. The case cover has a nice photo of Jack and Mr. Furley on the couch. When you open the case, you will be greeted with nice message/synopsis from George Sunga, a producer on the show. Sunga’s message/synopsis continues on the back of the case, as well. A photo of Jack (all pied-up) and Mr. Furley is on the back of the case as well.

The discs are in the case, of course, with disc one containing episodes 1-6 and has a photo of Jack in a blue background, disc two features episodes 7-12 and a photo of Janet in a pink background. Disc three has episodes 13-18 and a photo of Terri in a yellow background. Finally, disc four has episodes 19-22 and the extras, with a photo of Mr. Furley on the disc with a light purple background. When you remove disc four from the case, you can see a nice photo of the trio and Larry in the apartment. None of these photos on this entire set are from season seven at all, which is strange.

Now to the menu navigation--it is very similar in style to the last five sets. The full season seven theme song (same as season six) is playing in the background. And rotating images in little circles of Jack, Janet, Terri, Mr. Furley, and Larry from season seven are in the background. Each characters appears twice before the theme loops. The options on the menu screen are: “Play All,” “Episodes” and “Extras” (disc four ONLY). When you select episodes, you will go to an episode index screen where you can choose what episode you want. They made a little improvement for this on this set and the previous two sets, though. They added a chapter break after the opening credits, so you can skip over the theme anytime. But still no chapter breaks where the commercials would be. So, it is very hard to find a scene you want to watch in particular. I don’t see them doing full chapters for the last set (season 8), so no need to keep suggesting it.

The video is probably the best I’ve seen. I always found seasons 7 and 8 always to be clearer, even on TV. I guess it is because they moved the set to another studio. All the episodes are unedited and in the 25:05 minute range, as I previously stated. Like seasons two through six, there are some tag scenes from a few episodes that have probably never been seen since its original run, unless you are from an outside country. Every single episode has the full season seven theme song. In fact, six of the first seven episodes have the rare “saucier” theme song that was used in the original run. The closing credits for these also have a “saucier” feel, but that has been seen in syndication. Click here to listen to the “saucier” season seven opening. Or you can watch it here, too.

The video is the best like I said and the audio is very clear, even though it is in mono. It is the best mono on a DVD set probably out there. An interesting tidbit is, the message at the end of “Jack Gets His” is intact. It says “Next Week: The Grand Opening.” I think Nick @ Nite and TV Land never showed that, but if I recall TBS did.

Here are the runtime for each episode on this set:

Disc 1
“A Night Not to Remember” (25:05)
“Jack Goes to the Dentist” (25:10)
“Diamond Jack” (25:09)
“Extra, Extra” (25:09)
“Jack Gets His” (25:05)
“Opening Night” (25:05)

Disc 2
“Cousin Cuisine” (25:05)
“An Affair to Forget” (25:05)
“The Brunch” (25:05)
“The Impossible Dream” (24:54)
“Breaking Up Is Hard To Do” (25:05)
“Larry’s Sister” (25:06)

Disc 3
“Bob & Carol & Larry & Terri” (25:05)
“Going to Pot” (25:05)
“Star Struck” (24:58)
“Jack Goes the Distance” (24:45)
“Jack’s Double Date” (25:05)
“Janet’s Little Helper” (25:04)

Disc 4
“The Apartment” (25:05)
“Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow” (25:06)
“Navy Blues (25:07)
“Borrowing Trouble” (25:05)

The extras are just as good as the last set because of Richard Kline? The set has audio commentary on disc one with Richard Kline on the episode “Opening Night.” He is very interesting to listen to. He gives great tidbits, insights and facts. He also (like Dave Powers did in the last set) gives a great analysis of the opening credits at the LA Zoo. The episode runs over 25 minutes. He also gives commentary on disc two for the episode “The Impossible Dream.” I had so much fun listening to him. He remembers a lot and is interesting to listen to. He even remembers how he punched the wall in the kitchen at the Bistro and the painting on the other side of the wall fell—they had to stop taping to clean that up! This episode runs close to 25 minutes. These two commentaries are the best features on the set I think. Then we have all the other extras on disc 4. Anchor Bay pays tribute to the late Don Knotts, who died a few months back, with a nice 25:46 clip montage featuring the best of Mr. Furley from seasons 4-8. The clips are nicely done and are fun to watch. Mr. Knotts will certainly be missed.

The next extra is also on disc four and is a featurette on the show’s popularity in France, titled “Parelz-Vous Three’s Company?” The season six DVD had a similar extra in Polish, but that was much better. All this is are few scenes from the pilot, with some in English and some dubbed in French. I guess anything Three’s Company would have die-hards like me watching, but I don’t think many people will be impressed with this. Then we have best of clips for Jack (6:30), Janet (7:35), Terri (7:11) and Larry (7:15) from season 7.

The set is well done and all the episodes are unedited (which is all that really counts) and in great quality. The video is the most impressive to me. The extras were good, on par with season 6. All fans should buy this set because it had a lot of classic episodes and so they can continue their collection. Season 8 (final season) is slated for October 10, 2006. Come on Anchor Bay, bring on the spin-offs, too, and us fans will be pleased! We will not rest until everything Three’s Company is released! Season 7 is a must buy as Three’s Company moved into the Jack’s Bistro era, and continued to bring laughs.

The Final Season Is Full Of Outrageous Fun, Sexy Surprises And Exclusive New Extras!

It’s the unforgettable concluding season that began with Jack (Emmy® winner John Ritter) narrowly escaping marriage and children and ended with the finale in which he proposes to the woman he loves. In between, there were plenty of mistaken identities, sexual shenanigans, falls over furniture and even a visit from Jack’s dad! But why are Janet (Joyce DeWitt) and Larry (Richard Kline) pretending to be French? How far will Terri (Priscilla Barnes) go to get a promotion? What happens when Jack and Mr. Furley (Don Knotts) get locked in the freezer? How did Jack get a tattoo on his derriere? And who is ‘Grandma Tripper’ and why is she being forced to bake cookies? Joanna Kerns, Rita Wilson, Mary Cadorette, Dick Shawn, Lana Clarkson and Robert Mandan co-star in these 21 episodes, including the double-length concluding episode, that bid a final farewell to the hilarious and beloved sitcom that changed television forever!

MY REVIEW (Sept. 27 -- on sale Oct 3):

Jack, Janet, Terri, Larry and Mr. Furley are all back for one last time together on the eight and final season of Three’s Company now available for the first time on DVD from Anchor Bay Home Entertainment! In this last season, Jack narrowly escapes marriage and children at the start of the season but he finds another woman in the closing episodes which he proposes to. And just like the last two Three’s Company DVDs, you can buy it for $10 less than the previous sets!

The eight season stars John Ritter as Jack Tripper, Joyce DeWitt as Janet Wood, Priscilla Barnes as Terri Alden, Richard Kline as Larry Dallas and Don Knotts as Mr. Furley!

This unforgettable eight & final season had a bit of everything. Some stand-out episodes include “Jack Be Quick” where this woman wants to have children with Jack, “Out on a Limb” where Jack tries to get a nasty letter back before a food critic reads it, “Grandma Jack” is the one where Jack dresses up as a granny to enter a baking contest, “The Odd Couples” has Terri being hit on by a doctor, “Baby, It’s Cold Inside” is the one where Jack and Mr. Furley get caught in a freezer, “Jack’s Tattoo” is the one where Jack’s has a tattoo in a private area and wants it removed, “Cupid Works Overtime” is the one where Jack meets Vicky, and “Friends and Lovers” is the one-hour series finale that sees Janet getting married and Jack moving in with Vicky!

There were many familiar faces guest starring this season as well. Jordan Charney as recurring character Mr. Angelino, Joanna Kerns plays the woman who wants to have children with Jack in “Jack Be Quick,” Rita Wilson & Lana Clarkson in “Alias Jack Tripper,” Macon McCalman is Janet’s father in “Hearing is Believing,” veteran Parley Baer also guest stars in “Grandma Jack,” Dick Shawn as Jack’s father in “Like Father, Like Son,” Kaleena Kiff as little Muffit in “Look What I Found,” Eleanor Mondale as Dr. Fairmont in “Jack’s Tattoo,” David Ruprecht is Janet’s new boyfriend and husband to be, and Mary Cadorette & Robert Mandan in the last three episodes as Vicky and Mr. Bradford. Brad Blaisdell has a recurring role as Mike, the bartender at the Regal Beagle.

The packaging is nicely packaged in Digibook format, just like seasons two through seven. So when you open the case, you flip to the next disc like you would with a book. The color scheme for this season is a light blue. Season two was purple, season three was red, season four was green, season five was light pinkish, season six was yellow, and season seven was orange if you all remember. Like the previous sets, you have to remove the case from the box. The box cover features a nice cast photo of Jack, Janet and Terri in a nice pose. The back of the box has information on the series, set & special features and a photo of Jack, Janet, Teri and Larry. The case cover has a nice snapshot of Jack, Janet, and Terri. When you open the case, you will be greeted with nice message/synopsis from George Sunga, a producer on the show. Sunga’s message/synopsis continues on the back of the case, as well. A photo of Jack, Janet, and Terri is on the back of the case as well. Most of these photos being used on the artwork are season 6 (the box art is really a photo from season 7).

When you remove disc four from the case, you can see a nice photo of Jack and Felipe. None of these photos on this entire set are from season eight at all, which is strange.

Now to the menu navigation--it is very similar in style to the last six sets. The full season eight theme song (same as season six & seven) is playing in the background. And rotating images in little circles of Jack, Janet, Terri, Mr. Furley, and Larry from season eight are in the background. Each character appears twice before the theme loops. The background is mainly purple. The options on the menu screen are: “Play All,” “Episodes” and “Extras” (disc four ONLY). When you select episodes, you will go to an episode index screen where you can choose what episode you want. They made a little improvement for this on this set and the previous few sets, though. They added a chapter break after the opening credits, so you can skip over the theme anytime. But still no chapter breaks where the commercials would be. So, it is very hard to find a scene you want to watch in particular.

Like season 7, the video is probably the best I’ve seen. I always found seasons 7 and 8 always to be clearer, even on TV. I guess it is because they moved the set to another studio. All the episodes are unedited and in the 25:05 minute range, as I previously stated. Like seasons two through seven, there are some tag scenes from a few episodes that have probably never been seen since its original run, unless you are from an outside country. Every single episode has the full season eight theme song (except Cupid Works Overtime, which I believe had the short theme originally).

The video is the best like I said and the audio is very clear, even though it is in mono. It is the best mono on a DVD set probably out there. Some interesting tidbits: the message at the end of “Cupid Works Overtime” is intact. It says “To Be Continued Next Week.” I think Nick @ Nite and TV Land never showed that, but if I recall TBS did. Also, for the series finale at the end of the episode it has the Three’s Company logo turning into the Three’s a Crowd logo, with a message saying premiering next week. And for you people wondering about “The Charming Stranger” episode, in particular that infamous scene with Jack, it is intact and not censored. TV Land zooms the picture to Jack’s face, but the DVD doesn’t, which is good because we want everything unedited.

Here are the runtime for each episode on this set:

Disc 1
“Jack Be Quick” (25:06)
“She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not” (25:06)
“The Money Machine” (25:05)
“Out on a Limb” (25:06)
“Alias Jack Tripper” (25:05)
“Hearing is Believing” (25:06)

Disc 2
“Grandma Jack” (25:05)
“Like Father, Like Son” (24:59)
“The Odd Couples” (25:05)
“Now You See It, Now You Don’t” (25:00)
“The Charming Stranger” (24:53)
“Janet Shapes Up” (25:05)

Disc 3
“Itching for Trouble” (25:06)
“Baby, It’s Cold Inside” (25:06)
“Look What I Found” (25:01)
“Jack’s Tattoo” (25:06)
“Jack Takes Off” (25:06)
“Forget Me Not” (25:07)

Disc 4
“The Heiress” (25:07)
“Cupid Works Overtime” (25:08)
“Friends and Lovers” (48:32)

The extras are good. No audio commentaries on this set, but still the quality of the extras are decent. Each special feature is on disc four. Anchor Bay has added nice title sequence to each extra. It makes it look so much professional! First, we have Bloopers. They are all from season eight except one blooper is from season seven. Remember on the last set Richard Kline remembered how he punched the wall in the kitchen at the Bistro and the painting on the other side of the wall fell? Well, they have included that blooper on this set! The full blooper package runs 19:56. I have a full VHS tape of season 8 bloopers; I wish they included all of those. The bloopers are in great quality on this DVD, though. Next, Anchor Bay pays tribute to John Ritter, with a nice 25:18 feature called “John Ritter: Working with a Master.” It starts off with a nice title sequence that is like a rock-style Three’s Company theme. Nancy Morgan Ritter and director Dave Powers are together discussing John. A nice clip montage of John with some of the guest stars is included, with guests Joanna Kerns, Jordan Charney, Loni Anderson, Anne Schedeen, John Larroquette, Keene Curtis, Jeffrey Tambor, James Cromwell, Rita Wilson, and Barry Williams. Each guest star they show they show list of three credits of their other works. Then Nancy and Dave talk about John’s choreography from the classic sixth season episode “Up in the Air.” Then they show the full clip of the dance he did on that episode. Then they talk about John and the Emmy win in 1984. They also show the full clip and his full acceptance speech. I always wanted to see the full thing! Finally, they show the last scene of Three’s Company where the trio leave the apartment.

The next extra is a little clip, titled “Usted Habla Three’s Company: Even in Spanish, Janet is Delightful.” This is a scene from “Out on a Limb” where Janet comes in to the food critic’s office. It runs 2:03. Janet’s voice is dubbed in Spanish, but the food critic is talking in English. It is still funny! Then we have best of clips for Jack (12:17), Janet (11:38), Terri (9:41), Larry (10:55) and Mr. Furley (11:52) from season 8. These clips are much better than what we had before. First, we have longer clips and second they have nice title sequences at the start.

There is a sticker on the packaging saying “Includes 30-Year Reunion Special.” I don’t know what they mean by that, because I couldn’t find that anywhere. Maybe an Easter Egg? I doubt it. I will try and find out what they mean, and edit it in here, if I find out.

That’s a wrap! We now have all eight seasons of the best sitcom ever on DVD! But I will not rest until we get both spin-offs, The Ropers and Three’s a Crowd on DVD, too. I need everyone emailing Anchor Bay and DLT. Tell Anchor Bay to get the rights from DLT and release both spin-offs on DVD. Their email is: TVonDVD@anchorbayent.com. And tell DLT to sell the spin-offs to a DVD company. Their e-mail is: 3sco@dltentertainment.com.

This final season is well done and all the episodes are unedited (which is all that really counts) and in great quality. The video is the most impressive to me. The extras were good, too, with improvements on the title sequences for the extras. All fans should buy this set because it had a lot of classic episodes and so they can finish their collection. We will not rest until everything Three’s Company is released, so e-mail them about The Ropers and Three’s a Crowd! But for now, season 8 is a must buy as Three’s Company comes to a wrap and turns into Three’s a Crowd. Long live Jack Tripper!

PRESS RELEASE:

Time To Say Goodbye To The Perfect Company!

On October 3rd, Anchor Bay Entertainment bids adieu to the most outrageous roomies of all-time with Three's Company - Season 8 on DVD. The TV series that jiggled its way into the hearts of America soon became an Award winning hit and a weekly reminder that farce was alive and well and living on the beach in sunny Santa Monica. This wild 8th season set (coming out as the series has its high-profile 30th Anniversary) is packaged into a fun 4 disc set containing all 21 episodes, including the tearful two-part last episode.

Based on the British series Man of the House, Three's Company had fun with changing sexual attitudes and mores, and remains a colorful snapshot of the times and a laugh out loud funny pop culture phenomenon. The story of an amorous young chef named Jack Tripper (John Ritter, 3 Simple Rules), who shares a tiny beach side apartment with two very smart and sexy women, Janet (Joyce Dewitt, Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of Three's Company) and Terri (Priscilla Barnes, The Devil's Rejects), who lead Jack into a wacky barrage of sly and saucy misunderstandings. Along the way the platonic threesome will have to deal with the raised eyebrows of their not-too-hip landlord, Mr. Furley (Don Knotts, Andy Griffith Show), and their swinging bachelor neighbor, Larry (Richard Kline, Inside Schwartz).

Three's Company - Season 8 contains some of the late John Ritter's best work and a revealing featurette that pays tribute to his masterful performance skills with physical comedy and mellow-drama. This season contains the episode "Friends and Lovers" - the finale episode of the series! It remains one of the best remembered by fans, and the show that would introduce a spin-off staring Ritter.

He remains, quite simply, one of the best and most beloved characters in television sitcom history. In these five full- length episodes from among the late, great John Ritter’s favorites, this is Jack Tripper at his absolute fall-down funniest ever!

MY REVIEW:

Jack Tripper is among the best sitcom characters of all-time and now he has his own DVD set! Now Anchor Bay Entertainment will release five classic Three’s Company episodes that will be ‘capturing the laughter’ of Jack Tripper on DVD. These five episodes are among John Ritter’s personal favorite episodes and are all laugh-out- loud funny.

The five episodes on this set are: #84 “Downhill Chaser,” where Jack tries to pretend to be a champion skier to impress a girl; #119 “Urban Plowboy,” where Larry is in some sort of trouble and uses Jack’s name and the angry man hunts down Jack at Cindy’s aunt’s farm; #166 “Baby, It’s Cold Inside,” is a touching episode between Jack and Mr. Furley as they are trapped inside a restaurant freezer; #127 “Up in the Air,” is the classic episode where Jack goes on an island and goes crazy; and #172 “Cupid Works Overtime,” is the one where Jack meets his love--Vicky Bradford.

Guest stars include Barry Williams, David Ruprecht, Mary Cadorette, and Robert Mandan.

The packaging is a simple but effective single case. The front of the case features three small Jack Tripper photos in small circles surrounding a huge circle with his face. The color scheme is sky blue. Three’s Company Capturing the Laughter: Jack’s Favorites is written on the front. The back of the case has two cast photos of the trip (Jack, Janet, Chrissy -- although there are no Chrissy episodes on this set), along with a photo of Jack hugging Chrissy.

The disc itself is in the same style as the packaging--sky blue, and the same art from the front of the case. Again, it is simple but nice.

Now to the menu navigation--it is very similar in style to the season sets. The full theme song (from the seasons 6-8 years) is playing in the background. Moreover, different rotating images in little circles of Jack are in the background. The options on the menu screen are: “Play All,” “Episodes” and “Extras.” When you select episodes, you will go to an episode index screen where you can choose what episode you want. When you choose an episode, you get a decent episode synopsis, about a paragraph or so in length, and a screenshot from the episode. Then you hit play and the episode plays in its full-unedited form just like how it aired on ABC. Each episode is about 25:05 minutes long, counting the opening and closing credits. There are no chapter stops, just like the season sets, though they have a chapter break after the opening credits, so you can skip over the theme anytime. Still no chapter breaks where the commercials would be. Therefore, it is very hard to find a scene you want to watch in particular.

All five of these episodes have been released on their respective seasons’ DVD sets, so it is the same quality as those. Moreover, if you have not bought all the seasons, I’ll be simple and say both the audio and video have no problems and are great. All the episodes are unedited and in the 25:05 minute range, as I previously stated.

Here are the runtime for each episode on this set:

“Downhill Chaser” (25:04)
“Urban Plowboy” (25:05)
“Baby, It’s Cold Inside” (25:06)
“Up in the Air” (25:06)
“Cupid Works Overtime” (25:08)

It is strange why “Baby, It’s Cold Inside” is listed before “Up in the Air,” as “Up in the Air” is from season six and “Baby, It’s Cold Inside” is a season eight episode.

Compilation sets usually do not have extras, but this one does! It is not a new extra, but still good enough. The season eight DVD had this extra, but that is OK. Anchor Bay pays tribute to John Ritter, with a nice 25:18 feature called “John Ritter: Working with a Master.” It starts with a nice title sequence that is like a rock-style Three’s Company theme.

Anchor Bay has released all eight seasons on DVD, so now we can expect these compilation sets. Warner Bros. has done the same with Friends…they are trying to get more money or get casual fans to get a taste of the show on DVD. However, I will not rest until we get both spin-offs, The Ropers and Three’s a Crowd on DVD, too. I need everyone emailing Anchor Bay and DLT. Tell Anchor Bay to get the rights from DLT and release both spin-offs on DVD. Their email is TVonDVD@anchorbayent.com . In addition, tell DLT to sell the spin-offs to a DVD company. Their e-mail is 3sco@dltentertainment.com .

This set is well done and all the episodes are unedited (which they should be since they were on the season sets) and in great quality. My only complaint was why Up in the Air was not listed before Baby, It’s Cold Inside. All fans should buy this set because it had all classic episodes and fans who don’t have the season sets yet, buy this first to get a little taste before you start buying. In addition, if you have never watched the show…this is a good way to start I think. We will not rest until everything Three’s Company is released, so e-mail them about The Ropers and Three’s a Crowd! John Ritter is deeply missed and kudos to Anchor Bay for releasing a Jack Tripper set. Long live Jack Tripper! Lordy, Lordy, Lordy!
