After just four months, we are back with out Girlfriends on DVD, as the sixth season is now available on DVD for the first time from CBS DVD with all 21 episodes on a 3-disc set. Life, love, and comedy collide again in this African American version of Sex and the City! Girlfriends stars Tracee Ellis Ross as Joan, Golden Brooks as Maya, Persia White as Lynn, Jill Marie Jones as Toni and Reggie Hayes as William. This is the last season for Jill Marie Jones, as she left the cast following this season.
Memorable Episodes / Notable Guest Stars:
Some memorable episodes include the season premiere “Fits and Starts,” where following their reunion at his wedding Maya and Darnell remarry in Las Vegas. However, they soon begin to bicker over their living arrangements. In the conclusion, “Odd & Ends,” Maya and Darnell continue to bicker, but they ultimately decide to stay married, but date each other so that they can make a fresh start.
Recurring stars this season include Rebecca Creskoff as Jennifer, Khalil Kain as Darnell Wilkes, Tanner Scott Richards as Jabari Wilkes, Jason Pace as Dr. Todd Garrett, and Keesha Sharp as Monica Charles Brooks.
One time guest stars for this season include Melvin Van Peebles, Loretta Devine, Noureen DeWulf, Katt Williams, Jenifer Lewis, Wayne Brady, Barry Zito, Eric Dickerson, Roger Lodge, Arthel Neville, Kelly Rowland, and the star of the spinoff series The Game, Tia Mowry.
The main box is once again a snap case and features artwork of the four girlfriends (but no William this time) with a nice red/orange color scheme. It is on fire just like these hot women! The back of the box features a shot of the each of the girls and William this time, some screenshots, as well as a description of the series. Inside the case are the discs of course, but inside the packaging panels we have disc-by-disc breakdowns, including episode titles, original airdates and an episode description...like we have had on previous sets, no surprises. Again, the discs themselves are silver in color (very plain) and feature the show logo with episode titles on the bottom. Disc 1 contains Episodes 1-8. Disc 2 contains Episodes 9-15. Disc 3 contains Episodes 16-21.
Menu Design and Navigation:
The menu is very nice and similar in style to previous sets. However like the last set, on disc one before you get to the Main Menu, you have an option to go watch Previews or go to the Main Menu. The previews are for Everybody Hates Chris, Soul Food, and Charmed DVDs. The main menu has the same artwork as the cover art in a white/blue background. On the right side, there is a scrolling set of video clips in a reel type form, just like the last few sets. The theme song is playing in the background and it loops when finished...again no surprise. There is a "Play All" option, which plays all of the episodes and there is an "Episodes" section. The "Episodes" selection takes you to a sub-menu where you see a list of the episodes to choose (episode number and title) and a different image on each disc on the right side. We also have “Set Up,” where we can choose either English 5.1 audio or English Stereo audio. Who cares really? No subtitles?
Video and Audio Quality:
Like on past sets, the video is in widescreen again, like it should be, and it probably has never looked better unless you watched it in HD on UPN HD (or CW HD in the last 2 seasons). The audio is also perfect and sounds good. We get 6 chapter stops for each episode again (season finale has 8 stops though since it is an hour-long episode) and each episode is just around 20:30 in length, but one runs shorter and one is longer. The shorter one probably has something edited out I’m sure, hopefully someone knows. As was the case with the other sets, there is a disclaimer on the back of the box saying, “Some episodes may be edited from original broadcast. Music has been changed for this home entertainment version.” Once again, I have no idea what, though. On previous sets it said “some music,” now it says just “music” (like on the last set) so maybe more is edited out here again? I’m just guessing. I never really watched the show before I got the third season DVD. If you know, please post on our feedback link below. I remind you, reader Roddric Shropshire helped us on the third season DVD with music edits, so thanks to him for that. We didn’t get any updates for the fourth and fifth season DVDs though...so anyone out there found any edits/music replacements?

Blah, CBS DVD is so generic. Seasons 2 and 3 had extras, but like season one, four, and five we get nothing on this season six set. What a shame! Some interviews, original promos, bloopers or audio commentaries have got to be on this set. They could have had commentary at least from the stars of The Game spin-off or a feature on how that show was developed. We better get something on that series’ DVD, whenever that comes out.
It has only been four months since the last set and CBS DVD is giving us season six on DVD already! The norm is like 3 or 4 months in between sets, so we can expect season 7 by let’s say this summer; June or July is my bet. Two more seasons to go and then we are finished with our girlfriends on DVD! My Girlfriends, indeed! But we still have the spinoff series to get on DVD! The backdoor pilot for that series is on this set! And I must say it is decent. I’ve never watched that show before. But Tia Mowry is still good, as she was in Sister, Sister. You can still watch the spin-off series The Game on The CW Friday nights at 8:30pm ET/PT if you’re missing some Girlfriends and in reruns on BET. Girlfriends can still be seen in syndication on WE tv every weekday afternoon. I am not happy again we had no special features on this set, CBS DVD really is cheap, but again at least we are getting the episodes on DVD in a very respectable pace. That is what CBS DVD is known for best. Go and pick-up this sixth season DVD because you’ll fall in love with these girlfriends as they are hilarious. This season is who is sleeping with whom? Seriously, we see a lot of “in the bed” scenes on this set!
