Introduction:

Get ready for The Girlfriends and their catwalk in another DVD release of the hit sitcom from CBS DVD! All four girls (Joan, Maya, Lynn and Toni) are all back for more sexiness, glamour and sophistication in this series that is a fan favorite. Los Angeles is sure lucky to have four sexy young and upcoming women. This year has it all...wedding bells, vertically challenged boyfriends, contemplating Botox, and lose suitcases as life, love, and comedy collides once again! Girlfriends stars Tracee Ellis Ross as Joan, Golden Brooks as Maya, Persia White as Lynn, Jill Marie Jones as Toni and Reggie Hayes as Williams.

Memorable Episodes / Notable Guest Stars:

Some memorable episodes include the season premiere “Coming To Terms,” where Joan fears she has hit an all-time low after she holds a "Bring Your Ex" party, but doesn't get a single phone number. Toni objects when Joan plans a birthday party for her in “Secrets and Eyes.” The girls instantly detest William's demanding girlfriend, Monica in “The Invasion of the Gold Digger.” Joan is excited when Ellis invites her to the premiere of his new movie, but he refuses to let her walk the red carpet with him (or sit with him at the film) because he wants to preserve his "bachelor" image in “Blinded by the Lights.” In “A Little Romance,” Toni realizes she has fallen for Dr. Todd Garrett (the Jewish doctor) after he protects her during an altercation with a man on the street but is still reluctant to date him because of his size. In “Single Mama Drama,” Maya befriends a fellow single mother, a janitor at the law firm's building. Maya becomes depressed and lonely after moving into a new apartment despite the presence of a handsome and friendly neighbor in “Sex, Lies, and Books.” In “Runaway Bridesmaid,” Joan becomes jealous over Toni's engagement, and takes out all her frustration on Ellis, whom she begins blaming for all of her problems. In the two-part season finale, “The Wedding,” Joan promises to support Toni as the wedding approaches, but repeatedly neglects her in order to deal with her latest drama involving Ellis, who has failed to tell her that the mother of his child has been cast as his love interest in his movie.

Recurring stars this season include Khalil Kain as Darnell Wilkes, Tanner Scott Richards as Jabari Wilkes, Jason Pace as Dr. Todd Garrett,, Keesha Sharp as Monica Charles Brooks, Adrian Lester as Ellis Carter, George Alan as Bartender, with Karen Austin as Sandy Bickle, and Ann-Marie Johnson as Sharon Upton Farley.

Guest stars for this season include Laila Ali, Kellie Shanygne Williams, John Salley, Common, Phil Reeves, Jackie Collins, Bebe Moore Campbell, Marcia Clark, Suzanne DePasse, Orlando Jones, Bern Nadette Stanis, Russel Hornsby, Jennifer Lewis, and Isaac Hayes.

Packaging:

The main box is once again a snap case and features a picture of the four women in fashionable clothes on the cover with a nice purple color scheme. Wow Golden Brooks and Persia White are stunning women! The back of the box features a shot of the each of the girls as well as a description of the series and the list of special features. Inside the case are the discs of course, but inside the packaging panels we have disc-by-disc breakdowns, including episode titles, airdates and a brief episode description. The discs themselves are silver in color (very plain) and feature the show logo. Disc 1 contains Episodes 1-6. Disc 2 contains Episodes 7-12. Disc 3 contains Episodes 13-18. Finally, Disc 4 contains Episodes 19-25.

Menu Design and Navigation:

The menu is very nice. However, on disc one before you get to the Main Menu, you have an option to go watch Previews or go to the Main Menu. The previews are for Girlfriends S2 DVD and Jericho. The main menu has a shot of all four leading women and it is similar to the cover art. On the right side, there is a scrolling set of video clips in a reel type form. The theme song is playing in the background and it loops when finished. There is a "Play All" option, which plays all of the episodes and there is an "Episodes" section. The "Episodes" selection takes you to a sub-menu where you see a list of the episodes to choose.

Video and Audio Quality:

The video is in widescreen and it probably has never looked better. The audio is also perfect and sounds good. We get 6 chapter stops for each episode and each episodes is just under 21:00 minutes in length, so there is no need to make an episode runtime lists, because they are all within 5-6 seconds of each other. 21:01 is the highest and 20:56 the lowest. As was the case with the other sets, there is a disclaimer on the back of the box saying, “Some episodes may be edited from original broadcast. Some music has been changed for this home entertainment version.” I have no idea what, though. I never really watched the show before.

Update - Reader Roddric Shropshire has sent us a few details:

I just wanted to say that your "Girlfriends: 3rd Season Review" was awesome. I also wanted to tell you about the "Some music has been changed for this home entertainment version" details. Everything seemed cool, until the final scene of the 3rd season, in which in the episode "Wedding-Part 2" when the "girlfriends" do a little dance at the end.

I'm aware that CBS DVD had to cut the original song, because of the dreaded original music vs. DVD music war. I just wanted to tell you this information for anyone else who wanted to know.

The song that was originally played was Shalimar's "A Night To Remember" (as proof here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjSWq9gygtU&feature=related. You can even see Maya and Lynn (Golden Brooks and Persia White) mouthing the lyrics to the song as their dancing.

I also noticed that the DVD release as well as the syndication(as you'll see on the video) has cut part of the final act ending, my guess is because of the music. On the original UPN airing, it was the characters of Ellis, Todd, and Antoine dancing down the "soul train line" first, then William and Toni's sisters and finally the "girlfriends".

Special Features:

We got no special features on season one, but season two had some actually. We also have some on this set! It is not as many as the last set, but still good. The first featurette is on disc two titled “It’s What You Wear That Counts.” It runs 17:23 and shows off the beauty and fashion of the show. The girls are dressed well, especially Golden Brooks. Interviewed for this are Mara Brack Akil (Executive Producer), Stacy Beverly (Costume Designer), Tracee Ellis Ross, Persia White, and Jill Marie Jones.

The last featurette is on disc four. It is titled “Here Comes the Bride: An Invitation Inside ‘The Wedding’” and runs 20:51. It is behind the scenes details of Toni and Todd’s wedding, which was the two-part season finale. This was the first episode directed by Mara Brack Akil’s husband, Salim Akil. Interviewed for this featurette are Mara Brack Akil, Salim Akil, Jill Marie Jones, Reggie Hayes, Persia White, and Tracee Ellis Ross. I loved the little dance the girls did after the wedding! Golden Brooks was again the best there.

Final Comments:

It has only been four months and CBS DVD is giving us season 3 on DVD already! I’m sure this a cult favorite and has many fans. The show is still on the air today and going well in season 8 followed by its spin-off The Game. I am glad they continue to give special features, even though it wasn’t as much as season two, but that still beats no special features as was the case for season one. I have never really actually watched the show before I got this DVD. It is not that bad of a show. I still have not seen any episodes of the first two seasons, so I am a bit lost in some storylines, but I can pick-up quite easily on some other storylines. I hope that season four will come out sometime this summer. If I were a betting man, I would say June or July. So head on over to your local video store and say, “hey girlfriend, gimme Girlfriends Season 3 on DVD!” Better yet, just click on the link below to order for more convenience.
