The 8th season is the season that won FRIENDS the Emmy
for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2002 - the show about
six thirty-something friends living in New York
complaining about everything from their jobs to their
love-lives, or lack thereof. This season kicks off
with the conclusion of Monica and Chandler's wedding
and the discovery that Rachel is pregnant. The Emmy
winning season is now available on DVD and features
memorable guest appearances ranging from Brad Pitt to
Sean Penn and Alec Baldwin!
Memorable Episodes / Notable Guest Stars:
For a show like Friends, it's difficult to single out
just a few episodes that are considered "memorable"
because to its fans, every episode has that one moment
that just makes you laugh out loud or tugs at your
heart-strings. Some episodes that pop into my mind as
memorable are "The One After 'I Do'" in which Phoebe
pretends she is the one who is pregnant in order to
cover for Rachel. "The One with the Red Sweater" in
which Joey, Phoebe and Monica figure out that Ross
fathered Rachel's baby. "The One Where Rachel Tells
Ross" in which everyone but Ross knows he has a baby
on the way. "The One Where Joey Tells Rachel" in which
Joey tells Ross about his true feelings for Rachel and
finally "The One Where Rachel Has Her Baby" in which
Rachel gives birth.
The 8th season of FRIENDS included some stellar
guest-stars in the form of Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and
Alec Baldwin, like mentioned before.
The package is a digipak in which you pull out another
box and open it to reveal the four discs. There are
four discs in total and contain 23 episodes (really 24
but "The One Where Rachel Has Her Baby" is considered
an hour on this set and so it's number 23). Disc one
has the FRIENDS logo with a shot of the entire cast.
Disc 2 features dual shots of Monica & Chandler. Disc
3 is the same design and showcases Joey and Phoebe.
Disc 4 features the same design with Ross and Rachel.
The color is different on each disc. It's a nice
design - simple and easy. Disc 1 has episodes 1-6;
Disc 2 has episodes 7-12; Disc 3 has episodes 13-18
and Disc 4 has episodes 19-23.
Menu Design and Navigation:
The main menu has the FRIENDS theme playing, but with
no vocals. There is a PLAY selection, EPISODES
selection that leads to a new menu listing the
episodes to choose from; a SPECIAL FEATURES selection
which takes you to a new listing where you can choose
the special features located on the disc; and finally
a LANGUAGES selection where you can choose whether you
want subtitles or not in English, French or Spanish.
It's a nice layout and easy to use.
Video and Audio Quality:
The video quality was fantastic. I saw no glitches or
anything. The color was great and it was as good as I
expected. The audio was pretty good as well. It wasn't
too low like a lot of releases have been that I've
done. Every episode runs around 22-23 minutes.
There were several great special features. Discs 1 and
4 have Audio Commentary by Executive Producers Kevin
S. Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane is available
on the third episode of the season "The One Where
Rachel Tells Ross" (on Disc 1), as well as the fifth
episode of the season "The One With The Videotape" and
finally on the season finale (Disc 4) "The One Where
Rachel Has a Baby". Disc 4 contains the bulk of the
features. "Friends of Friends" Video Guestbook
features interviews with past guest-stars including
David Arquette, June Gable, Teri Garr, Debra Jo Rupp,
Bonnie Somerville and Lauren Tom where they discuss
their stints on the show inter-cut with scenes from
their appearances. It runs approx. 19 minutes. The Gag
Reel is bloopers from the 8th season and it runs
around 8 minutes. "Joey's Game Show Challenge" is a
game show that Joey is trying out for with Ross and
Chandler's help. It's an interactive game where you
can play as either Ross or Chandler and you are asked
season 8 trivia questions. It's a really fun game. And
finally, "Gunther Spills the Beans About Next Season"
in which the character Gunther previews what you can
expect to see on the season 9 DVD (it's just a montage
of scenes from Season 9 and runs approx. 2 min.).
Overall, I think this set is great. I especially loved
the Bamboozled Game Show you can play. It's really
fun. The commentary is always great. Overall, Warner
did a great job with the special features and the
layout of the discs. Everything about is great. I
can't think of a thing I would change or expect on
future releases. But I do think original promos before
the episode would be a neat feature but itís probably
