The series that was pulled after just one episode in 2006 is now on DVD with all of the unaired episodes! Emilyís Reasons Why Not: The Complete Series arrives on a single-disc DVD-R set from Sony Pictures Television Manufacture-onDemand.
To prevent herself from repeating an established pattern of poor relationship choices, self-help book publicist Emily Sanders (Heather Graham) looks for warning signs of trouble ahead that she dubs her "reasons why not," and uses these personal insights to make informed decisions about the various life struggles she deals with on a daily basis. With help from her childhood friend, Reilly, and gay herbalist Josh, Emily applies this method of self-preservation to every aspect of her life - from work to love to everything in between. Emily's "reasons why not" are the reasons why you should watch this uproariously funny comedy which also stars Nadia Dajani, Khary Payton and Smith Cho.
The series produced seven total episodes before ABC pulled the plug. After the pilot aired, ABC decided not to air the remaining episodes and thus canceled production. It was said ABC did not like the direction the show was going and didnít want to waste any time by airing it after the pilot. It was a strange move especially since the premiere, while still underperforming, was not a bomb in the ratings. We get all six of those episodes on this DVD-R set. Some of the good episodes from this short-lived sitcom include the premiere ďEmilyís Reasons Why Not,Ē where Emily begins dating Stan, her very attractive co-worker, but then questions the relationship when Stanís level of passion doesnít seem to match her own. In ďWhy Not To Date Your Gynecologist,Ē Emily begins dating her gynecologist in an attempt to prove to her peers that she doesnít just date immature guys -- only to discover the reasons why things between her and the doctor would never work out. In ďWhy Not To Invite Your Vacation Date Home,Ē where on a trip to Martinique, Emily meets a fun and relaxed guy named Alain an convinced that she has now become a new, more fun and relaxed person herself, she decides to invite him over to meet her friends.
Guest stars include Mark Valley, Jay Harrington, and Rachel Harris. Each episode seems unedited at around 25:30. The runtimes are as follows:
Note: Some online sources such as Wikipedia list a total of 7 episodes produced. This is apparently incorrect according to a post on our message board. Alicia Kirk writes:
I wrote the episode "Why Not Look at Bridal Magazines" however it was never produced. We had our order cut to 6 episodes, including the pilot which was the only one to air. I believe the series was sold overseas and all 6 eps ran in other countries. I don't have the 5 reasons but the gist of the episode was Emily getting caught up in wedding fever when a friend wants to suddenly get married.
1. Emilyís Reasons Why Not (21:38)
2. Why Not To Date A Twin (21:21)
3. Why Not To Date Your Gynecologist (20:52)
4. Why Not To Hire A Cute Male Assistant (21:39)
5. Why Not To Invite Your Vacation Date Home (20:28)
6. Why Not To Cheat On Your Best Friend (21:21)
The packaging comes in a standard Amaray case. A photo of Heather Graham holding a notepad and pen is used as the cover art. The show logo and The Complete Series mention are both above the photo. The back of the case has three episodic images along with a short synopsis of the series and the DVD specs are provided. The same photo of Heather Graham on the cover art is featured on the spine of the case. Inside the case, there is no artwork, just plain black. It would have been great if they included some episode summaries or additional photos. The discs just have a plain white background, with the Emilyís Reasons Why Not logo. Generic!
Menu Design and Navigation:
The menu is very basic like other Sony MOD titles. It just has various televisions in the background with a blue/green tint. They've used this same generic menu on other Sony on demand releases. They couldnít just insert a cast photo (or a hot photo of Heather?), even if it was just the same one as the cover art? The episode titles are listed vertically in black text in a teal box on the left side of the screen. There's a "Play All" button or you can view the episodes individually. A film canister type icon is next to the option you highlight that turns yellow upon your selection. Unfortunately, there are no chapter stops within the episodes, which is disappointing to me.
Video and Audio Quality:
This DVD set is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media, as we mentioned. Thus, the packaging notes that this disc is expected to play back in DVD Video "Play only" devices, and may not play in other DVD devices, including recorders and PC drives. The episodes are presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen. It looks good to me. For the closing logo enthusiasts, there is just one: Sony Pictures Television.
The audio is an English Dolby Digital track. It sounds fine and it should for a series that premiered just like 6 years ago. So there is nothing to worry about here. Unfortunately though, there are no subtitles or closed captioning on any of the episodes. Pretty standard and basic, but both audio and video are perfectly good here. Very good!
Unfortunately, there are no special features included, just like the other Sony MOD titles. This is usually the case with these on manufactured on demand type releases. You just get the episodes here, which are fine I guess, especially for a show that was canned after one episode. No expectations.
So I finally got to see more than one episode. Itís not that bad, but it certainly isnít great. I can see why ABC saw no potential, but I think if reworked a bit, it could have been a decent show. Iím glad it was released, though. Even if itís just a MOD DVD-R release, itís still something! This set has flaws, but I think it is expected since it is a cheapened set. The audio and video are not affected. They both are very good. Packaging and menus need improving though, but thatís not a major issue. Special features are never expected on MOD stuff, so if we even got something it would have been surprising. This is definitely a release for just the episodes and you get those!
If you watched the premiere, then I think you should get this set to watch the rest of the episodes. If youíre a fan of Heather Graham, then obviously you will want to have this in your collection. She looks good here, but itís too bad the show never got a chance despite the ratings being OK. The ratings werenít the problem. The direction and future episodes was what ABC was worried about. Oh well, at least Emily Kapnek has gone to better things by creating the current ABC hit comedy Suburgatory!
Final Numbers (out of 5 stars - How our point system works)
Video Quality: 4.5/5
Audio Quality: 4.5/5
Special Features: 0/5
Menu Design/Navigation: 2/5
