Question Should Happy Days have stopped after the 7th Season...?

Personally, I think they should have ended the show when Ron Howard and Donny Most left at the end of the seventh season. HD nosedived creatively after that it wasn't the same show. I think sometimes you have to walk away from something while you're at the top of your game, rather than running it into the ground.

HD isn't the only one - there are other shows that went on too long. But I think HD is one of the worst examples. Just my view, of course.

What do you guys think...?

I do think it shoulda continued, but they really shoulda put more into it instead of just riding the wave they were on - the fact that they didnt have much competition at the time shouldn't have mattered

It wasn't as good as before no doubt. But it was still entertaining and there were still some great episodes and storylines. Fonzie/Ashley comes to mind here.
BUT that side I would have preferred Ron Howard and Donny Most just staying for the eighth season and ending it then.
I think so many changes had occured by that time, and everyone had already grown up so much they could have done a nice ending right there. Instead of Joanie-Chachi the final show could have featured Richie & Lori Beth getting married.

No, I do not. I continued to love the show even after Ron Howard and Don Most left.

There were a few good episodes after 1980, but the magic was gone after Ritchie & Ralph left. I mean there was no one to compare Fonzie to. Roger, Eugene, Melvin weren't close to the Fonz.

Bush in 2004!

As long as people were watching, the show should have continued.

I personally could not stand it after Richie and Ralph left.

But hey, to each his own.

Even though the show wasn't as great after Richie and Ralph left I still found the show enjoyable.

Happy Days just wasn't the same after the departure of Richie and Ralph. IMO, what made the show great was the series' Fab Four: Fonzie, Richie, Ralph, and Potsie.

I've seen both Richie and non-Richie episodes plenty of times to say that Happy Days should have ended in 1980. The ABC Network, I think, should have continued the show after 1980 under a different name or perhaps as a spin-off of the original show. In other words, Happy Days seemed like a totally different show after 1980.

LucyFan, you are right on the money. When Andy Griffith left The Andy Griffith Show, some of the supporting characters continued on with Ken Berry as the lead actor and the show was retitled Mayberry R.F.D.

Personally, I think they should have just ended it. Period.

It would be like John Lennon leaving The Beatles and the other three continuing on with a weak substitute. I like your Fab Four analogy...a lot!
