Default Poll: Do You support the President's plan for immigration?

The moon topic was getting off-topic, so I decided to make another topic for this.

Do you support the President's plan for Illegial immigrants?

I do not support this plan BTW. I like Bush, but this plan sucks. Rewarding the people that shouldn't be rewarded!

What was this plan? I suggest that you might want to explain it for those who are in the dark on this issue.

Here's some details of the plan from a cnn.com article:

Monday, Fox called Bush's proposal to grant temporary guest worker status to illegal immigrants in the United States "an important step forward."

"What we want is the plan presented by President Bush," Fox said in a news conference Monday at the summit.

"We hope the plan has a happy ending through the political process that must be followed in the United States."

Last week, Bush proposed changing U.S. immigration laws to allow illegal immigrants to obtain legal status as temporary workers in jobs U.S. employers were unable to fill with Americans.

The plan would allow undocumented workers to obtain three-year temporary visas, renewable once. After those visas expire, the workers could apply for U.S. citizenship but would not be given preferential treatment over others, the Bush administration said.

Fox, who has called for blanket amnesty of illegal Mexican immigrants in the United States, said the proposal would be "a very important step forward for many Mexican workers in the United States."

Bush has said he did not want to reward illegal behavior by granting such amnesty.

I agree. I find it irritating that every president for the last 25 years has ignored this very major problem. In a way, it's like an invasion. If an organized army went north through Mexico into the U.S., numbering in the millions, it would be called an invasion.
If anything, we should be even more strict with illegal immigration...
- Close the border for a certain time period.
- Put our military on the border.
- Go after, and hold responsible, companies in the U.S. who knowingly hire illegal aliens. If the illegals found out that companies would be turning them away, they wouldn't be so eager to come over (illegally).
If we keep letting these law-breakers in, the U.S. is going to be a third-world country with an unemployment rate of about 25%.

To answer RoseArt's question on the other thread, that's largely a myth that illegals work in jobs Americans won't. Who worked at these jobs 50 years ago when there were few illegal aliens?
Also, most 16- or 17-year old boys will work almost anywhere (car wash, McDonalds, etc) to get enough money to buy a car! And since these jobs have a high-turnover, there are always more 16/17 year olds to replace the ones who have moved on to better jobs.

Hey Fleet, something we agree on

I don't think it's a good idea either. There's no reason to grant things to people who shouldn't be here in the first place. If we do that then there's no incentive to come in the legal way.

Actually, not to contradict you, but there have always been illegal immigrants. Certainly 50 years ago when all of the Jews were in a rush to get out of Europe. Not to mention when Castro came into power.

OMG a jehovahsend. One of the few things that you and I can agree on as far as politics goes.

I don't agree with this plan, either. I mean people who aren't here legally shouldn't be working here, in my opinion. And this comes after California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger repealed a state law allowing illegal immigrants/aliens to get drivers licenses, not that this affects the rest of the country.

And it's unfair to those who immigrated legally.

But it's gotten way out of control in the last 15 or 20 years.

Yeah. You do what I did. Marry a Canuck (or a Yankee in this case).

Don't like it either because it takes jobs, benefits, wages, and bonuses from the people who have families that is more important and put food on the tables, clothes on the backs, roof over their heads, among many, many, things.
