I thought this would be a neat topic for all you old record & Reel-to-Reel owners out there.
Do you know of any specific songs with backward messages? The most famious one I know is "My Sweet Satan" which can be heard on Stairway To Heaven From Led Zeppelin's Led Zeppelin IV Album). Another one I know is "Turn Me On Deadman" which can be heard on Revolution #9 from The Beatles' White Album. Does anybody else know of any backward messages on other albums? |

I'm sure Capt'A will know all the Ozzy/ Judas Priest/Sabbath/ Iron Maiden ones by heart. I don't!
![]() But I do know that some people thought if you played the mumbling backwards at the end of "I'm So Tired" on the White Album, it supposedly says "Paul is dead, man. Miss him, miss him..." Last edited by Rickenbacker : 12-15-2003 at 10:28 PM. |

The gibberish at the end of The Beatles' "I'm So Tired" translates backwards to "Paul is a dead man. Miss him, miss him, miss him."
At the end of The Beatles' "Free As A Bird," you can hear George playing the ukelele with a sample of what sounds like John saying, "uh, John Lennon." But if you play it backwards, he says "Turned out nice again." During the bridge of Paul McCartney's "The World Tonight," he sings (in a reverbed, Jeff Lynne-induced distortion) "I can see the world tonight." If you play that backwards, it sounds like he's saying "Save the animals' fur, Linda Eastman."

My Headbanging (or "Wanker" as he calls himself) Fiancé recalls that Motley Crew had some pretty intresting backward messages on their Shout At The Devil Album. Maybe you guys know more information about that.

I vaguely remember hearing about the Motley Crue stuff. Lots of bands were doing it at the time. Mainly the metal bands. By the 80s, it was a big fad. I wasn't a huge Crue fan, so I can't tell ya. I'm almost certain there's *gotta* be a website devoted to just this subject.

There are a lot of theories about what it allegedly says in "Stairway to Heaven", not only "my sweet Satan", but I've heard something about "buying lettuce at Safeway"!! Someone actually came up with that!!There is supposed to be something about a Pink Floyd song saying Psalm 23 where it says, "The Lord is my shepard," something about "veal cutlets" and giving "karate chops"... This is a rumor going back over 20 years...The whole brouhaha in the Judas Priest trial over the guys who committed suicide after listening to their "Stained Class" album was that in two songs, "Better By You, Better Than Me", and "Beyond the Realms of Death", was that there were backwards messages in the songs that allegedly prompted them to kill themselves (one survived, disfigured, but died later), something about "I-I-I-I asked her for a peppermint...I asked her to give me one." That's what the jury heard. ![]()

I remember that. I also remember when the Church (I think it was the Catholic Church) was accusing rock bands and artists, for being connected to Devil worshipping with their backward messages. And they were also responsible for "recruiting" teens into Devil-Worshipping cults. |

Oh my!... Feelin' pret-ty old...Back in the dark ages when everyone hadda listen to music on vinyl & play them on a Turn Table, it was fashionable to place the turn table in "neutral" in order to manually spin the record backwards to hear 'hidden messages' on certain songs. ![]() |

sArAh123¼ makes a lot of us feel old. Let me also add that Reel-To-Reel tape decks had a reverse button that allowed you to listen to music in reverse. You could also turn the tapes backwards manually. ![]() |

Just went to Jenya's site, and I'm totally freaked out!
I've never heard backwards messages before, and it's really creepy! "Stairway to Heaven" is one of my favorite oldies, but the seven satanic messages in a row kinda turned me off! ![]() ~Lauren ![]() |
