Default James Camersons "Titanic"

What does everyone think of Titanic? I loved it completely when I was 14, had the biggest crush on Leo DiCaprio and though Jack and Rose were just about the best couple ever. LOL.

Now that I'm 20 I don't like it nearly as much and most of the movie makes me cringe like mad, especially sme of the awful dialouge exchanged between Jack and Rose, and one of the officers shooting a fictional passenger then himself. There's great controversy surrouding the real life officer who people claimed kill himself, I don't think anyone knows for sure still what really happened, so for Cameron to not only put it in his movie as a fact, but to show the officer shootng a fictional character was ludicrous and an insult to the officers memory and his living family.

The whole thing with the treaure hunter divers and that silly Heart of the Ocean necklace was a bit of a farce. Why did the movie have to be in flashbacks?

Also, since I'm now a very keen enthusiast for the real ship and the real people who were abord it, I don't see why Cameron could not have used some of the real life folk for his characters rather than make up some of the most cliche ones ever to appear on film. Then again maybe it's a good thing he didn't.

Some aspects I must praise though, are the people's images and the costumes. The casting for the real passengers was excellent, for example Thomas Andrews and the Duff Gordons. Rose's costumes especially were GORGEOUS - I'm actually having one of my dress making cousins doing me a replica of the green and white lacy "tea dress" she wore near the start of the film after the ship had just left Ireland.

But the whole Jack and Rose love story was just awful, totally cringeworthy. I never shed tears when Jack dies, instead I cry for all the other extra characters who we get glimps of when the ships' going down. I do cry at the end though with Old Rose dying (some say she's dreaming, I think she died persoanlly) and going back to Titanic, always gets me for some reason.

Overall though it's a bit of a crap film that could've been better without such a naff script and less boring and cliche fictional characters.

Thoughts?

The only good thing about this movie was the special effects! IMO this movie stinks!

Thumbs up

I love Titanic, phony storylines and all. I've been a real Titanic buff most of my life, so I was thrilled when this movie came out. I thought it was so sad and had incredible special effects.
Even though they created some storylines for dramatic effect, the fact remains that over 1,500 people lost their lives on a ship that wasn't supposed to sink.
Once it hit that iceberg, the movie became very real and horrifying.
It's one of the few movies that I own.

I love everything about The Titanic history too.. very neat subject. I love the movie, love the song, I am not a huge Leo fan anymore.. course that was like... freshman year of highschool LOL. But anyways...

I didn't like it, then again I'm not really a fan of love stories that much, but I do like some romantic comedies.

I hate to admit this, when I was in highschool I held the record for seeing "Titanic" the most times. 18 times in the theater. It's rather sad, isn't it? I had the script, the making of the movie, the book, both CDs, posters, even a banner from the Kmart world headquarters (now that's a long story).

I haven't watched that movie in at least 2 years now. It's an okay movie - truth be told I watched it for Kate Winslet. She was my favorite actress and I had all of her movies. (Still do... somewhere) but Leo can NOT act. He's a pretty face, but he and Kate did not work well together. Seperately they did good jobs, but they didn't have good chemistry.

James Cameron's a good action director, but his script was so corny and full of cliches. He really should have let someone else rewrite it - and recast it. Kate is actually younger than Leo, but she looks 17 by 1912 standards. Leo looks 20 by 1997 standards. It ended up with her looking much older than him, and yet acting so inexperienced. Didn't work. I heard they wanted Mathew McConnoughey (sp?) for the lead or Christian Bale. Either would have been better IMO.

Still, I can't help but like that movie. Despite its many flaws, it's still very pretty to watch
