Are these bootlegs?

I've already got about 20 tapes I recorded myself.

Plus, the 24 minute ones were the syndicated versions, which were bastardized from the original shows.

Well, no official announcement has been made yet, I'm just going by the news that is posted at www.tvshowsondvd.com. Right now they're planning a release in 2004. At first it was going to be January but now I bleieve they pushed it to April. Here's the article from www.tvshowsondvd.com

New Information About the Upcoming Release
Posted by David Lambert
8/09/2003

Video Business Magazine has a new article entitled "SCTV Is Finally Coming to DVD". Well, we kind of already knew that, but still there is a LOT of new information in that article (all items are quoted from the article; please click the link above to read the complete text):

"In production for a January release"
Music clearance was a big delay: Eugene Levy says that "Every tune that we used over eight years had to be re-tossed a lot of money just for clearance, to re-license these things"
The DVD release will not be a "complete first-season" package, Levy said. "SCTV" began as a series of half-hour shows but eventually moved to a 90-minute format when the program began airing on NBC. The DVD collection starts with those 90-minute shows...Levy said the decision was made to start the DVD collection with the 90-minute shows because it's always smart to "start with your strongest stuff."
DVD producers are in the process of putting together bonus content for the "SCTV" set, and Levy is ready to play a part in the extras. "They're doing that stuff now and finding whatever footage that they can muster, off-camera stuff or anything else," he said. "There will be commentary. They're trying to organize that."

Wow, all this sounds terrific! This should be a great set, especially with participation of original cast such as Eugene Levy. We look forward to getting all the details when the official announcement comes through.

Like I said, since that article they changed the release plan to April. The website didn't post news about this, why I don't know. I found out at the newsgroup alt.tv.sctv. For 5 years now they've been saying that a release is coming, and I have a feeling it's finally going to happen

That is great news! I've been a big fan of SCTV since the late '80s...this has been a long time coming!

On the other hand, I just checked my copy of "SCTV: Behind The Scenes" by Dave Thomas. The first season of Network 90 had 26 episodes. That's 26 90-minute episodes. I agree with Levy that that was their strongest stuff, but how on earth are they going to package 26 90 minute episodes? You have to figure they'll probably only stick two or three episodes on a disc, at most. So that season alone could potentially be a 13 disc set! YIKES!

Hopefully they'll package them in slim cases in one box or something, like the "Twilight Zone" sets. That should--hopefully--bring the prices down as well.

I've been a big fan since the late 80's as well (I watched it on Nick at Nite--I had to do something while waiting for my mom to come home from partying lol). I watched the episodes NBC aired late at night a couple years ago but it just wasn't the same all hacked to bits and the opening credits cut out.

I don't know how they'll release 26 90-minute episodes either. Maybe they'll release it in volumes. Either way I really don't care how they release them, I'll buy them no matter what
