"Oak Leaves" - the symbol in the US Army designated for the rank of "Major", which is what Frank Burns is in the show. Frank's making the point he outranks Hawkeye.

Officer Rank in ascending order:

Lieutenant - 1 "Bar" (Father Mulcahey in early episodes, most nurses)
Captain - 2 "Bars" (Hawkeye, Trapper, BJ)
Major - gold "Oak Leaf" (Hot Lips, Frank Burns, Winchester)
Lieutenant Colonel - silver "Oak Leaf" (Henry Blake)
Colonel - "Eagle" (Sherman Potter)

Wait a sec. How come a major has a gold Oak Leaf and a Lieutenant Colonel has silver? Shouldn't it be the other way around if a Lt. Colonel outranks a Major?

Ya know Kristen, I've always wondered that. I looked it up on a website, and it said that in 1835 they decided to use the oakleaf to designate both Major and Lt. Colonel, but the Major insignia would be gold and Lt. Colonel would be silver.

That's it. It's just a way to tell them apart. But if you think about it, the higher ranking officer should have gold, don't you think?

Okey-dokey. Long as I'm not the only one who's confused LOL. As Hawkeye would probably say, "Leave it to the Army to think of something like that!"

Kristen

Wait, I've got one:

"I'm not an Officer. Two guys from the draft board caught me with a big butterfly net."

Hawkeye quotes for all occasions.

I really have to get a life...
