LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - One of Rick Schroder's first scenes in his guest-starring stint on "Scrubs," which begins this week, involves him entering a room carrying a pair of bedpans. While wearing pink scrubs. Of course, if that mental picture makes you chuckle, then Schroder has done his job, which is, of course, to be funny. "I know when I do something that makes my heart beat, and I get scared, that it's a good thing. I was scared on my first day on 'Scrubs,' " says Schroder, who starred on "NYPD Blue" from 1998 to 2001. "It was so great to just mix it up. I had a great time doing comedy again." Schroder begins a multi-episode arc as Paul Flowers, a male nurse (hence the pink scrubs), on Thursday's (Jan. 30) 40-minute edition of the hospital comedy. Elliot (Sarah Chalke) falls for him instantly when the two meet outside of work, but she's horrified to learn the next day that Paul is not a doctor. "I'm planning everything -- babies, marriage, where we're having the wedding -- within five minutes," Chalke says of her character. Paul's position at the hospital is "initially quite a shock for Elliot, and she has to see if she can get over herself." It's been quite a while since Schroder has done comedy on television -- going back as far as "Silver Spoons," even. He compares it to riding a bike, saying that once an actor has a sense comic timing, it's not something he ever really loses. The show's producers must have agreed; what started as a two-episode appearance has grown into four, with the chance for yet another appearance. "They obviously like what I do for Sarah's character, because she's so funny in the way she relates to me and is so insecure. She just gets crazy around me," Schroder says. "It's hysterical what it's done for her character, so I think that's the reason they decided to keep me." Chalke says she knew Schroder would fit in with the close-knit cast when they filmed the bedpan scene on Schroder's first day on the set. During one take, instead of just setting the pans down, he crashed them together like cymbals. "That had the entire crew in stitches," Chalke says. "He kept improvising all these things. He's really smart and funny, great with comedy. It's been an incredible four weeks." |
