I think the episode Getting Up The Rent was the first episode that was made not aired

The reason I think the episode Getting up the Rent was the first episode.

In the beginning when Florida entered the room she received a major round of applause which is probably because she was on Maude. And since Esther Rolle only received a round of applause in the Episode Welcome Home in 1978, the episode Getting Up The Rent has to be the first episode. It just wasn't the first episode that was aired on CBS.

It has always been known that Getting Up the Rent was the first episode that was produced. It's production number is 101. For some reason, sources assumed it was also the first episode that aired which is not true. Good Times debuted on Feburary 8, 1974, according to TV Guide, The New York Times, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and numerous other sources and the episode Too Old Blues (production number 103) was the first episode that aired.

The only I knew it was first because of how the audience reacted when Esther Rolle entered the room. BUt what a story for the first episode. That defintely is a powerful first episode.

I believe what the two of you said to be true but I would also like to inject that the audience applauding was not a sure sign of 'getting up the rent' not being the first episode. In my experience, in the 70's it was very common for the audience to applaude if they knew a person from another show...even if it was the very first episode.

There was only two times the Audience appluaded when Florida entered the room.
