Default Barney

Why did they make Barney's charcter into such a crybaby? On All in the Family he did have his spells where he cried about Blanche, but in ABP it seems like he's crying about Blanche in just about every episode that I've seen him in. j/w

I think he has a very distressful and depressing life, he doesn't know who he is, and what he is doing with his life, he hasn't moved on, he has a real hard expressing his feelings, if he was a little more open with everybody, I'm sure he would get somewhere. All he talks about is negative topics, like he is putting himself down all of the time. I don't know that's just my opinion.

That's a good explanation Impressions. I bet you're right.

I think that it's because the writers couldn't think of anything new and they just carried over a lot of the 9th season storylines (under Carroll O' Connor's creative control) and just settled with them forever. For example, you would hear Archie talking about Barney's dog crapping on his property and he would mutter something and go geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez. You can even notice them ressurecting the Rabinowitz name. The Rabinowitz name was used in ABP 10 or 11 years after it was mentioned in an earlier episode of All in the Family where Archie wanted to hire Rabinowitz (the Jewish father) to sue an Arab for his whiplash case. Case in point, although I still like Archie Bunker's Place, things like that (about Barnery and Blance) are just recycled storylines that the writers thought would keep the audience, making history repeat itself.
