Here is TV Land's official reason for not showing this one episode of the "Munsters," and without saying too much, let me just say this is totally ridiculous. They show stuff far more worse on there than one episode from a 1960's sitcom. Bull all the way!
[TVLTheLink: The episode "Herman's Peace Offering" contains material other than just fighting which is inappropriate under TV Land's viewing standards. Specifically commenting on that material would only incite people to want to view the episode for that purpose and defeat the reason for not airing it in the first place. Thus, we understand your frustration with not viewing it, but have a serious and sincere reason for skipping this episode and hope that you will respect the decision made.]

I agree with you all the way; it is a bunch of B.S. And it definitely sucks for people taping the series, like myself, when they skip just one episode.

That is absolutely ridiculous!! I don't agree with the decision made and I never will until they reverse their decision. They never will though. I agree with Flash72 in saying that TV Land shows far worse stuff than just one sitcom episode. I'll be glad when TV Land loses the rights to it. Maybe a network with a little more sense (and leniency) will pick it up and air every episode.

I don't get it. They will air "Soap" and "All in the Family", but they feel they have to censor an episode of "The Munsters"????????? What in the world does Ep. 53 have that is so horrible?

OK, I dug out my copy of "Herman's Peace Offensive", which is a taped copy from a 16mm print, and this is what's up:
It starts off with Eddie yelling "I'll kill him, I'll kill him, I'll kill him".... turns out he's being picked on by a bully in school. When Herman comes in to ask what's wrong, Grandpa says, "oh nothing... Eddie's being picked on, and so there's gonna be a massacre", or something along those lines, but the word massacre is used. Later on, Herman is also picked on by a coworker, but he and Eddie agree the best thing is to basically turn the other cheek. When both of them come home with black eyes, they decide to secretly practice boxing. So the next day they both go to work/school anxious for their bullies to start something so they can beat them up. Lily finds out that Eddie beat up 2 kids and threatened the rest of the kids of the class, he gets into trouble... So basically, in the wake of Columbine and a few other high-school shooting sprees, they decided not to show that episode. Pretty lame! Anybody who wants a copy, let me know... I have the whole series in SP mode. |

Now c'mon. Geez, are we gonna have to censor everything with the words 'kill' in it? You gotta realize that we do have good people out in this world, and we've got some downright f'd up people too. I'm sorry about Columbine. It was horrible and it's tragic that you can't even go to school and feel that safety that you used to feel years ago. I'm tired of censoring this kind of stuff though just because we have a few idiots out there that love to kill people. I could understand the censorship if Herman told Eddie straight up, "Son, I've got a gun in my closet. You're welcome to use it on them bullies." Hello! If we censored everything, we would be sitting here twiddling our thumbs. jmo and I'm sorry if I've pushed any buttons that shouldn't be pushed. It's just the way I feel and that's just the way I feel, simple as that. |

I might've sounded a bit harsh in my last post. Maybe it made it sound like I don't care about what happened with Columbine. That's not true. I'd like to make this post into kind of an experiment. We have so many people in this world and they think differently. Let me use Marilyn Manson as an example. I'm not a big fan of his, but I do like some of his songs.
Marilyn Manson The Death Song Were on a bullet and were headed straight into God Even he lacks an ending too We took a pill get face lift(?) ticket And we hope that it is true I saw cop feed a priest on the T.V. And I know they killed our heroes too We sing the death song kids Cause we got no future And we wanna be just like you We wanna be just like you We wanna be just like you We sing the death song kids We light a candle on a earth we made into hell And we pretend that were in heaven Each time we do we get the blind man's ticket And we know that nothing is true I saw a priest kill a cop on the T.V. And I know they're our heroes too We sing the death song kids We wanna be just like you We wanna be just like you We sing the death song kids Cause we got no future And we wanna be just like you We sing the death song kids We sing the death song kids We sing the death song kids We write our prayers on a little bomb Kiss it on the face and send it to God We sing the death song kids Cause we got no future And we wanna be just like you We wanna be just like you We wanna be just like you ...we got no future We wanna be just like you We wanna be just like you We wanna be just like you ...we got no future We wanna be just like you We wanna be just like you We wanna be just like you The death song kids How can many meanings can you make out of this song? I see two possible meanings. It's according to how your mind works. I'm now going to make up two very different people with two different sorts of personalities. We'll call the happy one 'Laura'. We'll call the unhappy one 'Mona'. Mona: Mona has had a very hard life. Her parents just divorced. She found out that her boyfriend cheated on her with her best friend. Another one of her friends just committed suicide. Mona saw the friend shoot himself. The friend was in the car and Mona was walking down the street at the time. She screams when she sees the gun in his hand. She runs up to the car just in time to hear the gun shot. Her mother uproots Mona out of their hometown and moves them across the country because she think it will help take Mona's mind off of the bad things that have been happening recently. Mona is different. She doesn't fit in with the others. She is different in every way imaginable than her other classmates. Her classmates wear the fancy clothes that can be bought in the mall. Mona prefers darker colors. Her classmates like hip new music such as Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, etc. Mona prefers listening to Rock music. Mona hasn't made any friends in her new school, and she gets picked on every single day of the week. Mona goes home crying every day. Mona feels uncomfortable talking to her mother about her depression problems. Mona listens to music to make her pain go away. Sometimes the music works, but other times she can't help crying herself to sleep. One day Mona hears a Marilyn Manson song that she's never heard before. This lyric makes her start to think: We sing the death song kids Cause we got no future Mona starts to hear some voices in your head that mimics that song lyric. You've got no future Mona. You are nothing. You are a nobody. You're better off dead. Go to the kitchen and swallow a bottle of pills. You're better off dead. Later on that night, Mona sneaks into the Kitchen and finds a bottle of pills. She swallows about 10 tablets and takes the pills with her to bed. She swallows 5 more and then she goes to sleep. Her mom finds her dead on her bed the next day. So what do we do? Do we rip this song from ever playing again because people like Mona commit suicide? Some people might point fingers at Marilyn and condemn him for even having a song such as that. However, Marilyn isn't the one to blame. Mona had problems before she even heard that Manson song. Mona's depression was already in the ground. When she heard that song lyric, she manipulated into thinking it would make her rip her depression out of the ground. You feel no pain if you're dead right? She felt this was the only solution to it all. It wasn't the best way out, but to her she thought it was the best way. I'm not sure how long this message will be, so let me send this post on it's way and make another post. Last edited by DarleneIllyria : 11-28-2002 at 08:43 PM. |

Laura: Laura's happy. Everything is going peachy in her life. She's never been so happy before in her whole entire life. Laura likes listening to Manson because she recognizes that the guy has talent. No he doesn't sing about happy go lucky stuff. Laura hears 'The Death Song' on the radio. The song finishes playing and she starts to think about what the song means. Yes, we do have terrible people out in this world. Some people get a high from pulling a trigger and shooting somebody. Does it really mean that we don't have a future? No, we must all have a future. Some of us do have better futures than others, but we are all destined for something. I could become President one day. That's a future isn't it? The future is tomorrow. The future is next week. Some people even consider the future in minutes. We all have futures in some manner or another.
Let's back track to this Munsters episode. Some people might take it in an unexpected way. Does the Munsters actually plant that seed that causes the destruction? No. The people that have the bad seeds already have the seed planted. If you are teased and bullied in school, that's the seed. If you see that Munsters episode that person will manipulate it in anyway possible. Others might watch the episode for entertainment value. You know, not all of us have that destructive bad seed in us. As you can see, we are all not bad people. We have two sides to each story. I see that we have some people that record the Munsters. I think you should show that episode. You do whatever you think is best if you do decide to show it. You might include a warning before playing the episode. You could show it at 3 in the morning on a school night so kids won't be able to watch it. This post is just my opinion and I hope it kind of clears up my bitchy first post. I apologize if I did sound bitchy in that post. |

That's a very stupid, lame excuse not to show the episode.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I remember this episode from the Pre-Columbine N@N run.

Thank you Larry W. Jones and TV Land,
Thank you for refusing to show one of the funniest episodes in the series. This is a joke and is another reason why political correctness has ruined issues of free speech! I remember this epiosde from TBS/Syndication and it is hysterical. There is nothing offensive in it. I agree....If TV Land is going to run "All in the Family" and the controversal 2-part "Edith's 50th Birthday", where Edith is sexually assualted by a stranger in her living room they can certainly show the Munsters, "Herman's Peace Offering" This is the same kind of crap where other sitcoms have funny lines that have been cut to protect the kids from anything sexist, violent, racist...ect. I can understand some parents might not want kids say 12 and under to see "R"-rated movies. But the Munsters is just a funny, happy, silly little sitcom! Do you think that it's producers Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher (Who gave us all-time classics like Leave it to Beaver) would do anything to show content that was not appropriate for kids? Maybe this explains why in The Brady Bunch the classic Skinny Dipping Scene and comment about 'Not swimming in an X-rated swimming pool without your parents permission was cut long ago." (See The Brady Bunch Board for more info) I want to know if the decision not to show "Herman's Peace Offering" was a one-person decision or a team decision? It was totally wrong and B.S and I agree with everyone on the board regarding this issue. Maybe if Hallmark gets The Munsters, they will choose to show all the episodes. (Oh, BTW, for a long time TV Land wouldn't show "Wally's Pratical Joke" from Leave it to Beaver, but finally decided to air it.) Jack |

You know, I'm sooooooooooooo sick and tired of everything getting censored!!!!!! It seems like these days every tv program, every radio program, movies, cd's and video games have to be censored for fear kids will see it. There are tv ratings and parents can use them as a guide. Why can't parents be parents and censor what their kids watch??? Censorship sucks!!!!! I don't think I'll be watching TvLand anymore now that they're in the censorship business. |
