It was on ABC for three seasons from 1982-1983 and then went into first run syndication from 1986-1988.

When the show was on ABC, I liked it a lot because it was based on one of my favorite 80's comedies...but I always found that it didn't fit great from a film into a sitcom. That flaw didn't show on ABC, but when the show went into syndication with Sally Struthers, the flaws were revealed, and totally visible. In fact, I stopped watching the syndicated one after 2 episodes [I wasn't alive, but it aired VERY briefly here in syndication].

The first four episodes, which featured Jeffrey Tambor as Hart, aired Thursday nights at 9PM in April of 1982. The premiere episode did very well, but the ratings dropped for each subsequent week's episode. The network evidently had faith in the concept, but not the way it had been executed during that first limited run; those episodes were not repeated. After a five month absence, the retooled 9 ot 5 with Peter Bonerz replacing Tambor returned for the fall at 9:30PM Tuesdays following Threes Company and kept that slot for one year. Despite doing fine in the ratings for 1982-'83, 9 to 5 underwent yet another major overhaul, with cast changes and a switch from film to videotape, ahead of its move to 9PM Thursdays in September of 1983. It divebombed in the ratings and was gone forever (from ABC) in just one month.
