Here's my fan fic about Ward's death. I hope everybody enjoys it. I tried to eliminate what I could from the story, but it's still pretty long.
Voices from the Past Ward Cleaver stared out the kitchen window. It seemed like a whole other world to him. The ghosts from the past had started to haunt him. Just yesterday he heard two little boys laughing in the house. Very few things made Ward’s heart heavy, but hearing the two distinct laughter made his heart heavy. His two sons were grown up now. They were already married and had kids too. I know that I still have June, but sometimes I wish I could turn back the clock and have the whole family back together. His thoughts were just small wishes that he knew would never come true again. June walked into the room and touched Ward on his shoulder. “It’s been a long day, Ward. Let’s go to bed.” Ward nodded his head slowly. “I guess you’re right June. It has been a long day.” Ward and June walked up the stairs their arms around each other. June placed her head on Ward’s shoulder. “We are going to have a mini family reunion tomorrow. Wally called today while you were outside. He wanted to come for a visit. Then Beaver called, he said he wanted to get away for a while. He’ll be here tomorrow.” Ward opened the door to the bedroom. “It will be nice to have the family together again. I guess Beaver is still having problems with Janice. He told me the last time he came for a visit that Janice wanted a divorce.” June sat down on the bed and started to take her shoes off. “Janice told me about the problems a few months ago. I hope they can work things out.” Ward nodded his head in agreement. “I’ll be right back, June.” Ward got off the bed and went to the bathroom. Ward closed the bathroom door and sat on the edge of the bathtub. He was having chest pains again. He didn’t want to bother June about it. Usually the pains lasted for a few minutes and then they would ease off. Tonight’s pain was rougher than the usual ones. Ward shook his head and got up off the tub. Maybe sleep would make the pain go away. “Dad! Come outside and play some basketball with us.” Ward opened his eyes and saw Beaver by the bed. How could that be? Beaver was grown up now. “Come on dad!” Ward put his finger up to his lips and then motioned at June. Then he whispered to Beaver, “Let me get dressed. I’ll be there in a few minutes.” Ward quickly got dressed and walked down the steps. He reached the front door in record time and rushed outside so he could play basketball with his sons. He reached the basketball court. He didn’t see Beaver or Wally anywhere. Ward looked down at his feet and saw the basketball right near his feet. The ball seemed to roll a little bit towards him. The wind whistled around him. Ward called out for Beaver and Wally. He called for them a few more times before he realized that it was the ghosts of the past playing tricks on him. Ward looked up and saw a big leaf fall from a nearby tree. It landed on top of the grass. Ward slowly walked back up to the house as his chest pains slowly sneaked up on him once again. June quietly got up off the bed. She wanted to surprise Ward with a big breakfast. Maybe Wally and the Beaver would come in time to have a bite to eat too. June quietly got dressed and eased her way out the bedroom door. June started fixing breakfast, but stopped when she heard a car door slam. After a minute, she heard the door open and close. Beaver stepped inside the kitchen. “Mom!” June put her spoon down and went to greet Beaver. They shared a loving hug. “I’m so happy to see you, Beaver. How are you?” Beaver smiled, “I’m doing okay. How are you doing? How’s dad?” June wiped away a few tears. “I’m okay. Ward’s doing fine. He sounded so surprised when he heard you and Wally were coming to visit. He’s still asleep.” Beaver sat down at the table. “Breakfast smells delicious, mom.” Just then, they heard the door open again. Wally came into the kitchen. “I knew I smelled something delicious. Hey Beaver.” Wally held out his arms and hugged June. June and Wally shared a few moments of conversation. Wally sat down next to Beaver and they started talking. “Breakfast is almost done. I better go wake your father.” June made her way up the stairs. She finally reached the bedroom. “Ward, time to wake up. Wally and Beaver is already here.” June shook Ward. “Ward? Wake up. Ward?” June felt the temperature in the room go from warm to chilling cold. June bit her lip to keep the tears from flooding down. The love of her life was never going to wake up again. A Few Hours Later… Wally tapped his fingers on the arm of the couch. Beaver was across from him. Beaver was staring at the family portrait that hung proudly in the center of the room. June sat next to Beaver. June wasn’t crying. She looked like she was caught in a whirlwind. Her face looked as pale as a ghost. Part of the ceremony would be held tomorrow. The actual funeral would take place the day after tomorrow. Beaver and Wally wanted to stay with June tonight. Wally figured that they wouldn’t get any sleep that night. They just wanted to be together. The next day came quicker than anybody expected. June, Wally, and the Beaver drove to the funeral home. Nobody talked on the way to the funeral home. They were all still reeling from the shock about Ward’s death. Just in a matter of a few hours, the backbone of the family had been ripped away from them. Wally wanted to be brave for his mom and for Beaver too. It was hard. It was so hard. All he wanted to do was cry his eyes out. Wally steered the car into an empty parking spot in front of the funeral home. They held hands as they walked through the dimly lit hallways. They reached the room where Ward was. They took their seats quietly. June took out her handkerchief and started to wipe away tears. Wally sighed deeply and said, “I never thought this moment would come. I prayed that somehow dad would live forever. Since last night, I’ve come up with so many memories of dad. He was always there for me. I can’t recall one second where he let me down and left me hanging. Dad always made everything okay. I was fortunate to have him for a father.” Beaver started to wipe his tears away and spoke, “He was a wonderful father. I remember every kind thing he ever did for me. Remember that time when Aunt Martha was visiting and she bought me the short pants outfit? I was so ashamed to go to school with those short pants. I hid out in the Janitor’s Closet the whole day. I got into a fight at school anyway. When dad heard I got into a fight, I thought he would get so angry and be so disappointed that I had to get into a fight when Aunt Martha was here. He understood though. The next day, I had to wear the short pants outfit again. I remember walking out of the house and hearing dad whisper for me to come into the garage. He had a change of clothes for me in the garage. He told me that I could just wear my regular clothes over the outfit I had on. Then when I got home from school, I could go in the garage and change back into the other outfit so I wouldn’t hurt Aunt Martha’s feelings.” Wally felt his own tears start. “I remember that time, Beaver. The situation that sticks out in my mind the most is the night before I left for college. Dad told me that he was so proud of me. He told me that the years sped by so fast that they almost blurred together. It’s moments like this where I wish I had the best of two worlds. In a way, I wished you had stayed a little boy forever. In another way, I saw you grow up and that’s memories that I will cherish forever.” June started to cry even harder. “It’s hard for me to pick out one memory that sticks out in my mind. Every second I spent with Ward is so memorable in so many ways. All my friends had spats with their husbands, but I don’t recall ever getting into a fight with Ward. I miss him so much. ” The funeral director stuck his head through the door. “The funeral home is about to close shortly.” With those words, the rest of the Cleaver family got up and left. The Next Day It started to rain lightly towards the end of the funeral. Wally and Beaver were supposed to leave today. All of the Cleavers friends had shown up for the funeral. Eddie Haskell showed a totally different side of himself too. After the ceremony was over, Eddie walked up to June to hug her. “Mrs. Cleaver, you and Mr. Cleaver were just like second parents to me. I know I have my moments where I act like a creep, but I really felt like a member of your house whenever I visited. If you need to talk, you know where I am.” The rest of the people at the funeral started to leave, but stopped by to offer their condolences Beaver stood by Ward’s grave. This was the perfect time to say what he had to say. Beaver looked to see where Wally and June were. He noticed that they were talking to some friends, so that would stall time for a few minutes. Beaver didn’t want anybody to hear what he had to say to Ward. This was just like the talks he used to have with his father. This was just the same. He wanted to keep it private so only his father would hear. “Dad, I want to thank you for everything you ever did for me. I want you to know that you were the best father a kid could ever wish for. You were always there for me, and I’ll never forget that. I wished I could’ve seen you one more time before you left, because I wanted to tell you all of this before. I get the feeling that you can hear me anyway. I love you dad.” Beaver wiped away his tears and walked toward Wally and June. “It’s time for me to go back home. Wally, I’ll see you later. Mom, if you need me all you have to do is give me a call. I’ll be here as fast as possible.” Beaver hugged Wally and June one last time before leaving. The crowds were starting to get even thinner. Wally decided to say a few words to Ward before he left too. Wally made his way over to Ward’s grave. “Dad, over the past few days I’ve came up with so many memories of you. You were a wonderful father. You were always there for me. I’ll never forget that. I’ll always remember you. I hope one day I can be a good father too, but I know I’ll never be the best. That honor goes to you. I love you.” A Few Days Later… June was about to go to bed. She went to check all the doors to make sure they were locked. The house seemed so alone. Then she heard something. It sounded like laughter coming from the back yard. She cracked the door open. It was even louder. Was Ward right? He had told her that he had heard Beaver and Wally in the house weeks ago. She thought that Ward had imagined it, but here it was. What had he called it? The ghosts of the past or something like that. She strained to hear a few snippets of what the ghosts were saying. Wally was talking now. Beaver just said something. Ward just said something. No matter how hard June tried to hear what was being said, she just couldn’t hear what they were talking about. However, she could tell which voice belonged to which person. June shut the door quietly and went upstairs to bed. The house didn’t feel so cold as long as June knew that her memories were just a few short steps away. |

That's a very touching story, Jenny. I have been through the deaths of both parents-- the last one just one year ago-- and your portrayal of the actions and feeling of family and friends is accurate. Thank you for your creative work.

Thank you for your kind comments. I'm sorry about your parents. It's rough losing anybody, but if it is someone that close- it just makes it so much worse. |

It's funny, I have never read this story all the way through because after the part where June tried to wake Ward, I couldn't go on because it hurt my heart too much. I have finally read it through and I must say, what a great job you have done! Well done! I'm still couldn't keep from from bawling though!
