Question John Hillerman/Why did it move to CBS?

I heard a lot of talk about this show's downward spiral when they added John Hillerman and hten moved it to CBS? I do not think Hillerman was the cause. What I think is that this show should have stayed on NBC? Was there any reason at all why this show was taken of NBC?

I was wondering that myself. The same thing happened with "Family Matters." Both shows moved to CBS from their home networks in thei last season.

I thought that maybe "The Hogan Family" moving to CBS was because in the late 80's/early 90's NBC was making a slow transition from family-oriented sitcoms to more adult sitcoms ("Empty Nest," "The Golden Girls," etc) and that it would be better suited for CBS (not to mention NBC making some dough, lol). A Very stupid guess, but hey, it's a guess, LOL

I am going to agree on that one. I guess the first television station to air good shows is the first to show nothing but crap like Miami Vice. I think it was good making both moves. Still, I think NBC did far better with the Hogan Family. After all, if NBC kept it after 1990, NBC would have aired it as long as Family Matters. To answer John Hillerman not being funny, I recall seing some episodes back when UPN in Chicago aired it from 1996 to 1998 and John did some very funny things on this show. I guess members have not given Hillerman a chance.

You know, I really don't remember those episodes. It's been such a long time since I've seen "The Hogan Family." I think the last time I saw it was like back in the early/mid 90's on Detroit's FOX affiliate on weekends. And what is really weird, I don't think they ever showed the "Valerie" episodes (which I would so love to see again, haven't seen them since the original run). I never got to see it on PAX because my PAX affiliate is the absolute pits. But I guess I can see why people think that the additon of Hillerman was such a bad idea. While watching the opening credits and saw Hillerman, I kinda got the impression that Lloyd Hogan was just a retired old man that hung around a lot, LOL.

ClassicTV4Ever, I guess I would buy your comment. Wow! I did not know that FOX affiliates aired this show! I kind of got the impression from the CBS re-runs, which I saw some time ago on UPN,(Which aired it for a good and very pleasing two years) Hillerman I guess was too sophisticated. All I can do is just continue praying and call TV stations, and call Columbia House several times until I get word. I enjoy sharing memories of this show a lot. Next to Perfect Strangers, this show was a big part of my childhood. Since I was born in the second season, I recall some parts of the final uncut 1990 THF episode. I remember, when CBS aired it. I only liked a few eps back then. Of course, I was loyal to TGIF kudos to Balki and Larry. Today, especally due to all these hot potato games against who should air this show, I want someone to air soon. These games remind me of the fights Sondra and Elvin had. Who should do what. I heard, on one topic on this board that we will see THF by Sept. 2003. That is thirteen months from now.

I think local affiliates can pretty much air any show from any network just as long as they are granted the rights to air them. It may or may not have been the FOX affiliate that aired it, though, now that I think about it. I'm just thinking it was the FOX affiliate because they were basically the only channel in the area that aired good stuff. I just remember seeing re-runs (I think on weekends) of it and hoping the show never went away, lol. I should have been smart at the time and recorded them.

This show was also a big part of my childhood, along with ALF, The Facts of Life, Diff'rent Strokes, and other shows that aired in the 80's. I was 6 years old when "Valerie" first premiered and we watched it from episode one basically because NBC was one of our primary networks for watching at the time. I even remember when they made a big deal about the name change and if I remember correctly, they even had a contest (or maybe just a poll?) for people to vote on what the new title should be.

You must have had a great childhood too just like me. I wonder if my local FOX station can air this show. I am pretty they could. WFLD is airing MASH and other shows that were classics.

Cool

this show came out in the spring of 1986 and it's first sign of major ratings came in the 1985-1986 season when it came into the Top-30 at #24 tied with "Moonlighting" and "Falcon Crest". all three shows had 18 million viewers. what's amazing is that "Valerie" debuted on March 1, 1986 and had such a whopping audience share that enabled it to claim the #24 position after a few weeks on the air! such a debut doesn't hold up and during the 1986-1987 ratings race, it failed to crack the Top-30. it bounced back in 1987-1988 under the title "Valerie's Family" at #20, tied with "My Two Dads". Valerie Harper had left the show in the spring of 1987. the title was changed again to "The Hogan Family" and in 1988-1989 it finished at #22 tied with "The Wonder Years". Apparently, NBC was tired of the see-saw ratings and thinking that the show would never reach the Top-10, NBC axed it in the sring of 1990 although it would go into the rerun season until June. that fall the show was on CBS but they were even more impatient than NBC and they axed the show in 1991 after it failed to make the Top-30. the show was void of controversy and scandal beyond Valerie's walk-out in 1987 to sustain much interest after it left the air in 1991. i watched to see Sandy Duncan and the cute Jeremy Licht, the guy who played Mark Hogan.
