Did Gidget ever have a mom? Did they ever mention her in the show? If so what happened to her?

Where did Gidgie get her nickname from? Her real name is Francis.

hi, i don't know what happened to gidget's mom, but gidget got her nickname from a combo of "girl midget". the real gidget was only about 5'2" or so, and when she first met the surfer guys on the beach they called her gidget, a combination of girl and midget. yes, there really was a real gidget, just pick up the book entitled "gidget". her father wrote it about her!

Gidget's mother was alive in the movies that preceded the series. I guess the producers thought there would be more storyline potential if Russ Lawrence was a widower. A nitpick: Gidget's real name was Frances, rather than Francis (female version vs. male version).
