Okay, I'm done with the 270s! Someone else already did Interstate 271, and there are more I-275s than I care to document! Onto the 280s, but I am not going to do any of the termini of the four I-280 highways on the map - again, I don't cover a group of auxiliary interstates that use the same number. So the next three-digit interstate number used only once is . . . 283.

Interstate 283, a north-south route, intersects with Pennsylvania State Route 283, an east-west route, just yards from its southern terminus at the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The two highways share a number and are both expressways, but there the similarities end. I-283 is a spur around the Pennsylvania state capital of Harrisburg, connecting with its parent Interstate 83 at its northern end; State Route 283 runs to Lancaster.

This is the northern terminus of Interstate 283, outside Harrisburg; Hershey, home of the famous chocolate company and an amusement park, is just to the east.

Now, Interstate 285 . . . a beltway around Atlanta. So what would the terminus be on a highway that literally goes around in a circle, where the end is the beginning? Well, that's easy. I just decided to post a picture of I-285 - called the Perimeter, and I call it the 285 beltway - at the point of its milepost-zero point, in East Point, Georgia, which is ironically southwest of Atlanta. I-285 is the most dangerous interstate in America. Also the most confusing; a pitcher for the Atlanta Braves missed a home game because he got lost on the Perimeter trying to find the right exit.

One feature of I-285 is an office complex oxymoronically called the Perimeter Center.

This is the New Jersey terminus of Interstate 287 in the town of Edison, just beyond the New Jersey Turnpike. At 98.7 miles long, I-287 may be the longest spur interstate in America; it's signed north-south in New Jersey and east-west in New York State. It is a partial beltway going around New York City, Newark, Paterson and Yonkers.

This is the New York terminus of Interstate 287, in Rye. U.S. 1 is its first junction heading north through New Jersey and its last junction headed east through New York State. I-287 begins and ends at Interstate 95, which is part of the New Jersey Turnpike in New Jersey and the New England Thruway in New York.

In Westchester County, I-287 is called the Cross Westchester Expressway. In Rockland County, it runs concurrently with its parent interstate, I-87, along the New York State Thruway. Although I-287 is a spur route, it goes through two states, where I-87 goes through only New York.

Here's a great picture of the new Tappan Zee Bridge being built next to the old one; part of the twin span of the new bridge is now open. The bridge - often called the Tap by New Yorkers - is part of the I-87/I-287 concurrence.

The original Tappan Zee Bridge was built over the gulf formed by the Hudson River - called Tappan Zee by the Dutch - in 1954, apparently to spare New York City motorists the indignity of having to go through Bergen County, New Jersey to get to the Catskills on summer weekends. It had the adverse effect of suburbanizing once-rural Rockland County. These days, New York State's Italian heritage is stronger than its Dutch origins, and Governor Andrew Cuomo plans to name the new bridge after his father Mario, who served as governor of New York from 1983 to 1995.

Neither my wife and I celebrate Valentine's Day (outside of watching romantic Valentines movies like My Bloody Valentine and Hospital Massacre), but I couldn't resist getting this card for her (From the heart)

This is the southern terminus of Interstate 294 in Lansing, Illinois. I-294 is part f the Tri-State Tollway, an Illinois toll expressway around Chicago that connects Wisconsin and Indiana through Illinois, hence its name. I-294 connects with ts parent at both ends and runs concurrently with Interstate 80 for a few miles before turning toward the north.
