In the Interstate highway System, three-digit auxiliary routes follow this numbering rule - if the first digit is an even number, the route goes through or around a city. If the first digit is an odd number, the route is a spur into a city or exurban area. The last two digits refer to the auxiulary route's parent mianline.

Well, Interstate 80 has a bastard child in California. This auxiliary interstate connects Interstates 580 and 880 but all of the available numbers for this route around a small part of the San Francisco Bay area were taken. So it was given the number 238, after a connecting state highway. There is no Interstate 38!

The northern terminus of Interstate 238 (above) is in San Leandro; the southern terminus (below), which ironically connects with California State Route 238, is in Hayward. While State Route 238 runs north-south, I-238 runs east-west but is signed north-south. Got that?

This is courtesy of the same federal government that declared I-94 east-west between Chicago and Milwaukee and I-95 north-south from New Haven, Connecticut to the Rhode Island border.

the Illinois terminus of Interstate 255 in Collinsville. Interstate 255 runs east-west in Missouri, north-south in Illinois. It becomes a state highway north of its junction with I-270.

Which I-270? Yeah, there are so many of them that I will not waste my time with pictures of the ends of any of the Interstate 270s in the system. Sorry, Columbus. Sorry, Maryland.
