Death has not been confirmed. There is so much misinformation. He was taken off life support because there was no brain activity. it sounds bad. If he recovers I sure hope that he gets his life back! But he could have suffered severe brain damage. Here's what CBS reports:

I just flipped by CNN, and they're reporting he's died.

Not to sound rude or anything, but I knew he would not survive at all when he was taken off life support. He was after all, pretty much brain dead (to me).

One of my favorite singers/musicians and sadly he died on my birthday.

This is my favorite Tom Petty song.

David Spade did a decent imitation of him:

One time he even did his own version of "I Need to Know," with the real Petty on guitar. I wish I could find that.

UPDATE: Okay, no video, but there is photographic evidence:

You're right. I was thinking the same thing. With no brain activity if he had lived he would have been a vegetable. He died peacefully. I'm glad for him in that respect. I love his music. He will be missed. Rest in peace Tom.

My two favorites. Totally different types of songs. That's one of the signs of a great musician/songwriter.

It depends. I had a grandfather who had a massive heart attack, put on life support, taken off and assumed he would die but he lived another 6 years. My mother though also had a massive heart attack in the hospital and died. We're not sure when because they called my dad saying she was in critical condition but still alive. We traveled to the hospital a half hour from my dad and by the time we arrived she was gone. I suspect she was probably dead when they called but didn't want to say it until we arrived.

I liked his earlier music best like Refugee, Don't Do Me Like That and Breakdown.
