Captain Cook might also turn in his grave. Would any Australians care to comment? https://www.theguardian.com/australi...ked-by-vandals

Oh No

So if they remove the statue of Columbus, does that mean they are going to rename Columbus, Ohio?

Oh yeah, they'd better start renaming places like Washington D.C. (Both for the first part of the name, a "slaveowner president!!" as well as District of Columbia; the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest; and any places that use it as part of its name, like Columbia University, or CBS (Columbia Broadcasting System)?

I suggest we replace the statue of Christopher Columbus with one of Lief Erikson, and the continent of North America be renamed Vinland.

What do you think?

No I wouldn't replace part of your history, but maybe have him standing alongside, with representatives of the Native Americans and Aleuts in the mix, with a plaque affixed to explain who inhabited your country and when.

I wish there was a way the left could look at past historical figures and not react in horror because it offends their 2017 sensibilities. They're supposed to be the nuanced thinkers, after all. Why can't they learn to be more selective with their outrage and not sweat the small stuff?

Completely agree...

Even Martin Luther, someone I see as one of the many people I see as a figurehead in my life was perhaps an alcoholic... should the Protestants that prohibit alcohol destroy Martin Luther statues?

Last I heard...they didn't!

But I don't think he had anything to do with South America, if my history serves me right. Anyway as I'm sure you know your country is named after Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci, so maybe there's room for one more statue on the plinth..

True, but if you are going to rename one you might as well rename the other. I also say the all cities named Columbus be renamed "Erikson".

I also say we rename this country the United States of Vinland, The Miss America Pageant be renamed the Miss Vinland Pageant, and the America's Cup race be renamed the Vinland's Cup race.

When I get on a roll I get on a roll!

Love this post! That's what drives me nuts about SJW, they are offended over this stupid garbage. Yes slavery was evil but it happened and why ignore that? There were many slave owners who did good things, like Jefferson and Washington.

You don't understand. They're white males who helped found the United States of America. In liberal's minds it's impossible for them to have done anything good.

Sad but true. Babalu, we are agreeing on many things lately, weird isn't it? People think I'm a liberal but not at all. Actually the SJW get on my nerves because they are so busy worrying about others. I don't know if you ever saw the movie Queen about Alex Haley's grandmother who was the daughter of a slave owner and slave. Anyway on this one site we were discussing it and I said that if I had to be a slave I'd rather be owned by this family in the movie than the majority of the families in Roots. Someone jumped on me saying slavery is always wrong. Of course it is, but back then many had slaves and many saw no problem because they didn't know better. They called me a racist and said I was glorifying slavery. I wasn't, I was comparing things for that time. It sort of reminds me of modern day racism, yes racism was wrong but many of our greatest leaders of the 20th Century were racists. I look at the good someone did and the bad they did for that time period.

Liberals constantly harp on slavery in the United States, often saying "Blacks endured 400 years of slavery in America". That of course is a complete and total lie. Number one, whites didn't come to the US until the 1600's so white people haven't even lived in America for 400 years. Next, the United States wasn't a country until 1776 and slavery ended in 1865. That's 89 years of slavery, not 400.

But - did you know that arabs own black African slaves today? Today! Right this very minute there are Africans that are held as slaves in various arab countries. But you don't hear a word about it in the media because arabs are non-white and generally unfriendly towards the US, which makes them politically correct and protected by the left wing media.

And by the way, Alex Haley's book "Roots" was later proven to be a fraud. Another thing the left wing media covered up.
