Angry 10 Things That Will Soon Disappear Forever (And 7 That Refuse to Die)

10 Things That Will Soon Disappear Forever (And 7 That Refuse to Die)

Just one of the latest lists, file under "FAKE NEWS":

1 - Keys
2 - Blackouts
3 - Fast Food Workers
4 - Clutch Pedals
5 - College Textbooks
6 - Dial-Up Internet (it's not already dead?)

10 - Incandescent Light Bulbs

Things that refuse to die:

1 - Parking Meters
2 - Cassette Tapes
3 - Ethanol Flex Fuel
4 - The Penny
5 - Fax Machines

my thoughts:

1 - Keys - I don't buy it, if the power goes out you're homeless. Plus there are too many things like padlocks that keys are just simpler, and simpler always wins.
2 - Blackouts - HAHAHAHA - while they may become less frequent, we can't control the weather and while they may be upgrading some parts of the grid, poorer areas are not getting upgraded and are not going solar until the price comes down more (which it will eventually, but we aren't there yet)
3 - Fast Food Workers - while I don't mind the idea of not having some pimply kid spit in my taco, I don't think this is happening any time soon - it is still cheaper for corporations to work humans than robots ....for now.
4 - Clutch Pedals - while I personally think that everyone should be taught how to drive a manual clutch, I do think that these will be gone on all but high-end sports cars soon
5 - College Textbooks - I believe this will happen, and it should as soon as possible; it is a complete waste because information can change faster than they can print a textbook. BTW I think I spent over $800 on my first year college textbooks (some were used, and I did get about half back selling them at the end of the term)
6 - Dial-Up Internet - I think this will be gone very soon - some phone companies don't even want to maintain phone land lines anymore, and support and maintenance costs are way higher for this antiquated nonsense.
7 - The (Farm) Plow - OK, if you guys say so. Maybe I can get one real cheap then.
8 - Your Neighborhood Mail Collection Box - I have noticed less of these, and realistically we get mail pickup at work so I have never actually looked for a mail box in the last decade)
9 - Your Privacy - well, YOUR privacy may be gone but I guard mine pretty vigorously.
10 - Incandescent Light Bulbs. - I honestly don't buy the claims about the longevity of CFL's or LED's. I have more incandescent bulbs remaining in my house than CFL's (maybe a dozen) and LED's (like 2), I change them out when they go bad, but so far I have had to replace ALL of the CFL's much more frequently than the incandescents, and both of the LED's. I do like the power savings and will continue to switch them over, but if you break a CFL you practically have to call out the hazmat team and they are still too expensive, and until they lower the price more and improve the defect rate I don't think they are really going to take off.

Things that refuse to die:

1 - Parking Meters - uh yeah - cities LOVE those things, even to the detriment of local businesses
2 - Cassette Tapes - really? I don't think I've seen anyone use a cassette in at least a decade, not even for mix tapes - its too easy to put music on your phone or whatever device
3 - Ethanol Flex Fuel - uh, OK? I don't think most people care what type of fuel it is as long as it makes their car go. Will people spend a bit more up front to save 30% on fuel costs? Who knows.
4 - The Penny - for some reason pennies will never go away.
5 - Fax Machines - businesses still use them all the time, not gonna die anytime soon.
6 - Paper Checks - these definitely should die - I don't even know why businesses still accept them, my bank lets me make payments online to just about anybody using electronic checks or money transfers.
7 - CB Radios :

Was the dark of the moon on the sixth of June
In a Kenworth pullin' logs
Cab-over Pete with a reefer on
And a Jimmy haulin' hogs
We is headin' for bear on I-one-oh
'Bout a mile outta Shaky Town
I says, "Pig Pen, this here's the Rubber Duck.
"And I'm about to put the hammer down."
'Cause we got a little convoy
Rockin' through the night.
Yeah, we got a little convoy,
Ain't she a beautiful sight?
Come on and join our convoy
Ain't nothin' gonna get in our way.
We gonna roll this truckin' convoy
'Cross the U-S-A.
Convoy!
By the time we got into Tulsa Town,
We had eighty-five trucks in all.
But they's a roadblock up on the cloverleaf,
And them bears was wall-to-wall.
Yeah, them smokies is thick as bugs on a bumper;
They even had a bear in the air!
I says, "Callin' all trucks, this here's the Duck.
"We about to go a-huntin' bear."
'Cause we got a little convoy
Rockin' through the night.
Yeah, we got a little convoy,
Ain't she a beautiful sight?
Come on and join our convoy
Ain't nothin' gonna get in our way.
We gonna roll this truckin' convoy
'Cross the U-S-A.
Convoy!
Well, we rolled up Interstate 44
Like a rocket sled on rails.
We tore up all of our swindle sheets,
And left 'em settin' on the scales.
By the time we hit that Chi-town,
Them bears was a-gettin' smart:
They'd brought up some reinforcements
From the Illinois National Guard.
There's armored cars, and tanks, and jeeps,
And rigs of ev'ry size.
Yeah, them chicken coops was full'a bears
And choppers filled the skies.
Well, we shot the line and we went for broke
With a thousand screamin' trucks
An' eleven long-haired Friends a' Jesus
In a chartreuse micra-bus.
Well, we laid a strip for the Jersey shore
And prepared to cross the line
I could see the bridge was lined with bears
But I didn't have a dog-goned dime.
I says, "Pig Pen, this here's the Rubber Duck.
"We just ain't a-gonna pay no toll."
So we crashed the gate doing ninety-eight
I says "Let them truckers roll, 10-4."
'Cause we got a little convoy
Rockin' through the night.
Yeah, we got a little convoy,
Ain't she a beautiful sight?
Come on and join our convoy
Ain't nothin' gonna get in our way.
We gonna roll this truckin' convoy
'Cross the U-S-A.
Convoy!

I still frequently use cassette tapes. I record talk shows and listen to them later.

Also, a local station KOST 105.9 plays only Christmas songs from late-November through Christmas day. I just put a 90-minute tape in to record it and also listen to it later. I use maybe 15 tapes recording those songs.

I have quite a few songs on tape I recorded from albums using my brother's cassette deck. I still listen to those, too.

Suck that I will have to buy an iphone just to get in my house . I like my cheap flip phone because I drop my phones all the time.

We already have a Subway here that makes you order a sandwich on your iphone and they don't accept cash. However there's still 30 more in the city that do it the regular way.

I like the neighborhood mailboxes for sending jumbo sized Christmas cards. Mildly inconvenient that is.

Niles: God is forgiving, Miss Fine. When I was a boy, I once took five shillings out of the collection plate at church for toffee.
Fran: And nothing happened to you, right?
Niles: That's right, absolutely nothing. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go wash other peoples' underwear.
