It's fun to look at pictures of old record players from back in the day, but many of them were poorly made and the tone arms/cartridges were notorious for re-cutting the grooves on vinyl records, causing damage to the playing surface of the record. When I was a kid, my parents bought me one of those cheap record players, it damaged my records but at the time I didn't care because I didn't know better and just wanted to play my records. As I got older, I learned the value and importance of high quality stereo equipment and the proper care for vinyl records.
