Question how can it be done?

Whenever you post something online (sitcomsonline.com , here is a good example ), you leave an IP address. ? Do they actually say where you live at and other kinds of information?

Reason I ask, a friend of mine went to court yesterday ( I went along with him ). Before his case came up we watched the previous 2 cases. Here is one we witnessed.

A girl ( 32 years old ) claims she was attacked in the shower room at a local health club by a man despite the fact that this is a "women only" club.

Instead of calling the police, which she never did ( she said in court that her mother would "beat her" if she reported it to the police ) instead she posted what happened on a local bulletin board. The health club noticed a drop in business and decided to investigate and was tipped off
about the posted message.

Thanks to the number of sercuity cameras located in front of the club as well as in the parking lot of the shopping center, plus several other members spoke out in court thatthey saw no man enter the club as well as the fact this girl has in the pastaccused many of doing the same thing ( came out in court she has spent many of times in mental hospitals ).The girl got into some deep trouble. She was ordered to pay a fine and was told to seek help.

The health club manged to trace the thread to her by using her IP address. I knew an IP address can be used to tell what part of the country you're from but to be used to pin-point right down to the address of the person sending the message, thats a new one on me.

I'm 100% certain that I.P. numbers do not have anything to do with where you live. For example, at this other message board I used to hang around on there was the guy who had an I.P. number which was almost identical to mine. The thing was, he lived in south London and I live at the opposite end of the country! This proves that location has nothing to do with your I.P. number.
It would just not be sensible if a person's location could be found using their I.P. number - it's not safe!
The only way to find someone using an I.P. number would be to contact a local P.C. store and find out if they ever sold a computer with a certain I.P. These stores will know the I.P.'s of all the P.C.'s they have sold and they will know who they have sold them to. This is probably how the Sports Club you were talking about found this girl. They would have made a note of her I.P. and then taken it to all the local computer dealers and asked them if they had ever sold a machine with this particular I.P.

Did you hear about the creator of the 'Melissa' virus who was sentenced to 20 months in jail the other day.

He had sent it from a stolen AOL address and password, and they (AOL) traced it to his telephone number and then arrested him.

ISP's do generally log your ip address and would be able to tell when you log on and log off and your contact information as you are billed.

I heard about that.

Using the ISP address to track down the person who is posting is done quite a bit. Police do it quite often case in point...when it comes to tracking down those who download and send out child pornography, or making bomb threats to schools by using Yahoo or Hotmail to send them for example.

Many businesses have gone through this route as well in order to prevent slander and such.

But as far as by just looking at the numbers and tell that so and so lives at 123 Main Street in Fort Collins, Colorado, no it takes more than that. You have to go through the service provider and then only if there is a good reason for it. Otherwise they wont bother.

very interesting !!!

I went to IP Chicken and my number is 208.45.169.166

how does these numbers tell the exact street address of me, phone number, full name, ect...? I can see AOL,MSN or any of the
providers knowing this for billing and security if it needs to be but for the average person just by looking at the numbers and say " the person who posted this is Jane Doe and she lives at 12345 Lucille Ball Road in Jamestown, NY . Her phone number is 555-5555" that part I dont get at all.

I have in the past came across this sort of thing on other boards and read threads by others who claim they can do this.

an ip address is like a computers phone number to send and recieve info or anything from the web.. And it's not just any person you would have to know a little something about computers"a small time hacker" not a real big time hacker couse really if you know so much about computers that you can track ip address you are considered a small time hacker i dont call myself one couse I'll never actually hack but i do know how.. and tracking ip address is like something to do for fun.. it's usally used by jhonny law to track poeple sending threatning letters and stuff like that..and if you wanted to change grades in school you would call there computer using there ip address.. And you can get somebodies ip address by them having an open port. that's why i said go to ipchicken.com then scroll down and see if any of the four dots are red and read all of them to see if you have any open ports o not well that's it so buh bye

and if you want to know anything else just ask buh bye
