Does anybody use the tv rating system?
I read somewhere not to long ago that many parents dont use them at all. I do question some of the ratings though. Who does the actual rating of the show - the network or station? I noticed that on one channel The Simpsons is rated TVG while the exact same show on another channel is TV-PG. News isnt rated, yet on one of our local channels at the beginning of each newscast it says "...News 10 is rated TVG except some stories will be rated TV-PG. When we are about to show a TV-PG story, we will take a 5 second pause so you can take the children out of the room so they wont watch the story that is rated TV-PG ". I have also heard that all shows featuring rock music is not allowed to be rated TV-G. Even say a Backstreet Boys concert but country videos on CMT CAN get the TV-G rating, though I have to admit I have seen some country videos that are jsut as sexual as rock videos. I have a mixed opinion on ratings. True something is ned to tell parents what the content of a show/movie has but the way the current ratings are. To me its a joke. Between Parents not using the TV Ratings, stores selling "adult" video games and movie theatres for the most part allowing kids into R movies. I wonder why have ratings at all. Yet there is talk about radio ratings. |

I, as a teenager, believe it or not, use the rating system!
With my list of TV shows, I have calculated the following:TV G - 164 TV PG - 33 TV 14+ - 0 That's not to say I haven't seen an R-rated movie, but I always ask my parents for permission first. The biggest things I have seen as a difference in TV ratings are some cartoons are rated G on one station and Y or Y7 on another. Also, some of the PG+ shows have the sub-warnings (Dialogue, Language, Sexuality, Violence) and others just have the basic warning. Radio ratings, huh? They already put advisories on CDs and cassettes (do they still make LPs?) and video games have a unique rating system all there own (E for Everyone = 6 & Up, T for Teen = 13 & Up, M for Mature = 17 & Up and AO for Adults Only = 21 & Up) so, it would be no biggie. Now, if they started rating books, I wouldn't like that too much! |

Radio is supposed to be the next member of the media to be rated. I heard by 2004. Reason being to the large number of "shock jocks" and talk show hosts like Howard Stern Imus, Dr. Laura, Rush, Jim Rome, Dan Patrick, Tom Leykus, Sports Junkies ( I could be here all day ).
In my hometown on the local top 40 station we had a 30 year old afternoon dj got just a little to friendly with a 13 year old girl- all right on the air. They were having sex while the tune "FLY by Sugar Ray was playing. Chances are they may have gotten away with it, however the dj left the mike on and the whole city heard what was going on. And a lot of this stuff happens from what I read so can I can see why some parents want a rating system for radio. How they will do it, thats a good question. |

I'm 20, so I don't pay much attention to the ratings system. If I'm watching TV with a younger cousin, I do use them though.
