Default What's the worst winter weather you can recall?

In a couple of days, the History Channel is showing "Wrath of God" about the famous Buffalo blizzard of 1977.

Though not alive at the time, I lived a good chunk of my life in Buffalo, where the winters were horribly brutal at times.

I know a lot about bad blizzards.

What'a some of the worst winter weather you can recall?

I'm looking for sleet, hail, snow, wind, wind-chill, arctic conditions... you name it!

That was every winter in North Dakota up until 1997. No ****.

The ones I was ALREADY around to witness... 1992-93, 1993-94, 1995-96 and 1996-97 are some of the worst winters I can recall offhand. We had frequent huge blizzards with a TON of snowfall during the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons. I remember one blizzard in late 1993 where we ended up with 8' of snow and drifts up to 12' high. I've got pictures of whole houses and vehicles completely buried under snow. In fact, I posted pictures here and can probably easily locate them, if I just look.

1995-96 was INSANELY COLD. I mean COLD. COLD as in the local channels played PSAs during every commercial break to emphasize bundling up in 8 layers of clothing when going outside - and no, I am not kidding. Yes, EIGHT layers of clothes. They had cross-section illustrations and everything. I have a picture of my paternal grandma holding up the front page of the local newspaper the day after it hit -86 degrees here. Yep, EIGHTY-SIX degrees BELOW ZERO. It was so cold, they actually canceled school and that never happens here, even when it hits -40 degrees w/o wind chill.

The winter of 1996-97 had the best of both worlds... Subzero temperatures all the time AND frequent blizzards. Then, it warmed up so suddenly in April of 1997, that the towns along the Red River Valley (Grand Forks in particular) got flooded quickly.

i can't remember the exact year though i know it was in the mid 90's. we had a snow/ice storm and a lot of branches fell causing power outages. some areas had no power for 3 days or more. our power was out for a day but my best friend didn't have power for a few days and came to my house to stay. we lived on the bottom of a steep hill and my sisters boyfriend couldn't get his car up it and each time he tried it would just spin out and slide back down the hill. so he had to stay overnight at our house. i remember hating that cause i thought he was so sleezy!

Since I live in TX, we rarely get huge amounts of snow to accumulate. I remember when I was 8 it snowed right after my birthday and it was up past my ankles LOL. I thought it was awesome to see that large amount of snow.

Wilmington, NC - Two snow days on two consecutive Tuesdays - January 18, 2000 and January 25, 2000. At least I got those days off of school, though.

The Blizzard of 1993, though I barely remember it, it was EPIC. No storm has come even remotely close since. A foot of snow with 50 mph winds followed by temperatures around zero. State was closed for nearly a week.

way back in 1967, the ENTIRE city had a HUGE snowstorm that struck the day before Christmas and dumped something like 5' of snow on the entire area. I remember, TV stations were out when that happened, and noone could go anywhere. Our church was forced to cancel Christmas eve mass that year.

It's the Blizzard of '78 here. 55 inches of snow in two days. Crippled the state for weeks.

November or early December 2005. I was in Americorps at the time and we worked for hours in the drizzling rain. There was talk of it freezing overnight. It did so we didn't work the next day. But that day was truly brutal.

Everything bitterly cold, the rain coming down. I was lucky to have a chainsaw that day. The engine kept me warmer than the people dragging brush. But it was so frustrating... when the saw would quit on me, and I'd be forced to sit down and try to fix it, and one of the supervisors would accuse me of being lazy and tell me to get to work.

It's like, "Dude! Do you think I am sitting down, in the rain, in my thin, soaked coat for my health?"

People talk of "burning" in hell. Hell, for me, would be very cold...

And what city would that be?
