Exclamation Toledo Man Accused of Impersonating FBI Agent at Ohio Supermarket

BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio - A man from Toledo is accused of dressing up like an FBI agent and telling a store manager in Broadview Heights he was searching for two suspects in a criminal case.

The incident happened Monday, June 3, at the Giant Eagle on E. Royalton Road.

According to the police report, officers were called to the store just before midnight after a man wearing an FBI baseball cap and badge was “walking around inside the store acting very strange.”

The manager told police the man entered the store and claimed to be an FBI agent, saying he was looking for a man and a woman who may have been altering their appearance. The manager said the man also claimed six other agents were in the parking lot, and several times appeared to be speaking into a microphone in his sleeve.

The manager then asked the man to identify himself, and he showed a gold badge with FBI markings and a name on it. When asked for more proof of his identity, the man said that was all he had with him. So the manager called police.

As the officer arrived at the Giant Eagle, he saw the man getting ready to leave the store. The officer remarked in the report that the man was wearing a suit coat, tie, black FBI baseball hat, black pants and dress shoes. He was also wearing a badge on his belt that had “Federal Bureau of Investigations,” an ear piece in his right ear, what appeared to be a microphone on his jacket’s lapel and an FBI pin.

The man stopped at the officer's order. When asked if he was a law enforcement officer, the man said he was not.

The officer arrested the man, who was identified as 28-year-old Dean Lyden. A search of Lyden turned up more police-like items on his belt: an empty black holster, a Smith and Wesson collapsible baton in a holder and a flashlight, the report said. The ear piece was plugged into his cellphone, and Lyden said he was using it to listen to the police scanner.

According to the report, Lyden told the officer he was dressed this way “because it was a childhood fantasy and he had done it in several other cities.”

In Lyden’s car, a black BMW, police said they found a dash-mounted strobe light and had an hand-held spotlight.

Lyden was taken back to the Broadview Heights Police Department for processing and charged with impersonating a federal officer.

Police researched the details of the incident and found a similar case at a Giant Eagle in Richfield from a few months ago. The report said the suspect in that case matched Lyden’s description. Richfield police have not filed any charges yet in that case.

Even with that hat I don't think I would have believed he was FBI, Just doesn't look like one. Although I once saw a guy sitting on a bench with his shoe in his hand chatting like crazy and I thought he was a Control agent, turned out he was just mad because he stepped in dog poop.
