Unhappy Black Sabbath Guitarist Tony Iommi Diagnosed With Cancer

Link

Tony Iommi, the lead guitarist for Black Sabbath, has been found to have lymphoma and will undergo treatment in London, according to a statement posted on his Website on Monday.

The news of Mr. Iommi’s illness came as the original members of the British heavy metal band were writing and recording their first album together in 33 years. The statement said the other band members from that lineup – the vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, the bassist Terry (Geezer) Butler and the drummer Bill Ward – will travel to London to finish the record, which they had been working on at a Los Angeles studio with the producer Rick Rubin.

“Iommi is currently working with his doctors to establish the best treatment plan — the ‘Iron Man’ of Rock & Roll remains upbeat and determined to make a full and successful recovery,” the statement said.
No details about the Mr. Iommi’s condition were released. It was unclear if a tour scheduled for later this year would go on as planned. The statement said the lymphoma – cancer of the lymph nodes – had been caught in the early stages.

Mr. Iommi, who is 63, was one of the four working-class teenagers who founded Black Sabbath in Birmingham, England, in the late 1960s. His skill on the guitar, despite having lost the tips of two fingers on his fretting hand in a factory accident, helped the group become one of the most successful and influential hard rock acts in history.

The original foursome broke up in the late 1970s, when Mr. Osbourne left the group for a solo career. The other three members continued to play with different singers and the band reunited for a tour in 1997. There was considerable excitement among fans when the band announced in November that the original line-up, with Mr. Osbourne on vocals, would write a new album together this year and then go on a world tour in June. The last studio album of all-original material appeared in 1978 with “Never Say Die.”

Unhappy

This is very sad news. Tony Iommi is the man who made me want to play guitar when I was in my early teens.

Get better, Tony. My prayers are with you. I don't want you to go in the way Ronnie James Dio did. Be strong, for you ARE the Iron Man.
