The first full set of DVR ratings for 2011-12 won't be out until next week, but early returns are following the same pattern as previous years: The shows that get the biggest gains in DVR viewing tend to be pretty popular already.
Live +3 ratings for Sept. 19-30 put "Modern Family" and "Two and a Half Men" -- both Top 15 shows in the same-day ratings -- as the biggest gainers in both viewers and adults 18-49 rating. "The Mentalist," "Grey's Anatomy" and "NCIS" also get sizable DVR bumps in viewers, while "New Girl" and "The Office" are among the leaders in 18-49 ratings gains. The Live +3 ratings measure delayed viewing within three days of a show's initial broadcast. The majority of DVR viewing tends to happen within the first three days after the first airing, so they're a good barometer of where a show will end up when full Live +7 numbers are released. (They're not, however, the same as C3 ratings, which specifically look at how many people watch the commercials during a show within three days of air.) Here are the top 10 shows in absolute (not percentage) gains in both viewers and 18-49 ratings for the first 11 days of the 2011-12 TV season. Total viewers 1. "Modern Family," +3.43 million (13.99m to 17.42m) 2. "Two and a Half Men," +3.16 million (24.63m to 27.79m) 3. "The Mentalist," +2.68 million (13.24m to 15.92m) 4. "Hawaii Five-0," +2.67 million (11.72m to 14.39m) 5. "Grey's Anatomy," +2.65 million (10.32m to 12.97m) 6. "Criminal Minds," +2.43 million (13.36m to 15.79m) 7. "CSI," +2.31 million (12.25m to 14.56m) 7 (tie). "NCIS," +2.31 million (19.73m to 22.04m) 9. "Blue Bloods," +2.29 million (11.68m to 13.97m) 10. "Castle," +2.27 million (12.47m to 14.74m) Adults 18-49 1. "Modern Family," +1.66 (5.86 to 7.52) 2. "Two and a Half Men," +1.35 (9.0 to 10.35) 3. "Grey's Anatomy," +1.34 (3.92 to 5.26) 4. (tie) "Glee," +0.92 (3.84 to 4.76) 10. "Hawaii Five-0," +0.87 (3.32 to 4.19) 10 (tie). "CSI," +0.87 (3.15 to 4.02) 10 (tie).
