Default The Monkee's Episodes Unedited??

Were the episodes on the Rhino set for The Monkees complete and uncut?
If not is their hope for the upcoming re-release to be unedited episodes?

Totally unedited, problem with that series though, is that several versions of certain episodes exsist as songs were replaced during reruns purposely because it was their latest song. I see no reason that any edited versions would ever be released, unless it is a Sony release, God forbid! I am sure Rhino is doing the just announced re-release of the series. After all, the monkees are currently on tour and the series is running nationally again on Antenna TV....those versions from Sony are unwatchable they are so edited...all the fun ending interview segments and at least one song is edited from every episode on Antenna TV.

This is my major complaint with Antenna TV. I have noticed that in many of the shows, in particular season two many of the songs are missing, or others are cut or sped up. I noticed this with the song Going Down and how one episode (I forget which one offhand)the song airs midway through the video.

I have the Rhin prints of the DVD and my major complaints are that the color is fade in some areas and that the DVDs include the original song that aired during the clips. It would have been nice if there had been a special feature where you could chose the song because many episodes, especially the first season have several variations. I understand that there are several syndication packages floating around that feature different songs.

Well yes...and no. The episodes are unedited with one exception. The epsidoe Too Many Girls has some minor edits in it. It aired in some 'on demand' cable packages I believe. Here is the scene intact from a YouTube clip:

Overall not a huge deal but this 'complete' version has yet to see official release. The print that Rhino released has some slight edits to cut out the full body shot (hey now!) and other frames are brushed out a bit. The print on this one is a little dark overall.

Some of the other episodes have dirt and debris on there and deserve a good scrubbing while some look very very good.

I have a feeling though, the way the new sets seem to be laid out that these are just going to be the same material/configurations that Rhino released.

I don't know if this is the case everywhere, but I also noticed in that episode on Antenna they use the first season opening instead of the more common second season one.

I believe 'that' has been corrected but I do recall seeing an on demand episode from season 1 with the season 2 credits...and they were sped up I think. In fact, come to think of it, when the shows aired back on MTV in the 80s, the only two episodes from season 1 that had the season 1 credits were this and the series premier Royal Flush. The rest all utilized the season 2 credits and the package was a mishmash (sp?) of episodes. From what I've seen in the on demand packages, they seem to have the same package of episodes.

Specific to season 1, some were from the summer '67 rerun package (as many of the songs were dubbed over - for example in the "I've Got a Little Song Here" episode, the original song was "Mary, Mary" yet the version in that package had "For Pete's Sake" which of course hadn't even been recorded at the time of the original ariing. One episode in fact (The Chaperone) was from the CBS/ABC Saturday morning rerun cycle as it had "Midnight Train" as the song in place of "This Just Doesn't Seem to Be My Day" so that was really rare to see.

Aside from those, this is what I recall aired in that package. These have all long since been corrected on the DVDs.

Royal Flush had 'This Just Doesn't Seem to Be My Day' and 'Take a Giant Step'. The version that aired in reruns had 'You Told Me' and 'The Girl I Knew Somewhere' from the summer '67 package. The interesting thing on this one is that the credits listed 'Apples Peaches Bananas and Pears' and 'Good Clean Fun' as the tunes so the credits were apparently tacked on from the '69/'70 Saturday morning rerun cycle. On the DVD, no song credits are listed at all for this episode.

Success Story had 'Shades of Gray' in place of 'I Wanna Be Free' from the summer '67 reruns.

One Man Shy had 'Forget That Girl' in place of 'I'm a Believer' from the summer '67 reruns.

Monkees On Tour had 'Steam Engine' and 'Words' in place of (I believe) 'The Girl I Knew Somewhere' and 'I'm a Believer'. I think this was another '69/'70 rerun episode.

I've seen these episodes with yet different songs dubbed over them. For some reason I remember the song Words instead of 'Your Anuntie Grizelda' in the Monkee Chow Mein episode so I wonder from when I was a kid, if that was the song dubbed onto that show.

It is a little goofy that there are so many different cuts and presentations of these shows (not to mention other shows out there).

Have you heard how many syndicated prints there are? Someone told me that in some cases there are at least three packages: the original episode, the summer rerun and the Saturday morning airing. I don't think this is for every episode and I believe it was more common for season one than season two. I know I caught the songs replaced on episodes listed such as For Pete's Sake for Mary Mary and Shades of Gray for I Wanna Be Free.

I don't know how many still float around. I speculate that the majority of the rerun prints that circulate are from the summer '67 reruns. Anything from the CBS/ABC airings are pretty rare (like The Chaperone episode which aired on CBS in February of 70).

There is a clip on YouTube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJ9TDsgvpjw)

that has I Never Thought it Peculiar from the Frodis Caper as aired in a rerun package somewhere (I think on the East Coast). This was first heard in November of '69 in the CBS reruns.

It appears there isn't a rhyme or reason to how these are sent to the stations. It seems to be a mix.

Check this website out which lists the '69/'70 rerun airings (if you go elsewhere on the site it will also note which episodes from season one had songs replaced in the '67 reruns). Here is the address:

This site was done by Aaron Handy. Lots of hard work and fun to look through. He rules!

Thanks for the web link. I admit I was surprised there are all these alleged prints out there because they seem to be pretty much alike when I see them (meaning same prints on several stations). I know the DVDs are different but probably wouldn't know if I didn't have them. I figured out many of the songs couldn't have possibly been originally included due to them being recorded later.

Agreed Aaron Handy is great. I've spoken to him on YouTube and he used to frequent other sites I go to. Very good information from him.
