Roseanne's "Into That Good Night"
Few finales were so nonsensically conceived, executed and reviled as greatly as Roseanne's last episode, let alone final season. Credibility had already been stretched to the brink by the absurd storylines and fantasies winning the lottery had brought about, let alone learning that the entire season had been Roseanne's writing to cope with her husband Dan's actual death, in the process bizarrely ret-conning half her family's narrative arcs. http://www.ugo.com/tv/worst-series-f...on-the-prairie

I like the episode up until the end, when Roseanne started the monologue. What I didn't like about it was that most things we knew turns out to not be true. It wasn't just the lottery but also Darlene's and Becky's husbands were switched. Jackie was really gay. Dan was dead, etc.
I don't mind being a little creative with your ending but this one effected how I watch the reruns. Your last episode shouldn't screw your viewing of the previous episodes.

I'll be honest, I didnt like the whole last season of Roseanne. I mean with them winning the lottery and going on all those adventures just didnt fit. The thing that really got me was that you find out that Dan cheated on Roseanne. Dan Conner was a very good character and good guy and I just dont believe he would cheat on Roseanne. That right there killed his character.
So what your saying was that Roseanne was dreaming that whole last season to cope with Dan's death? Btw, how do you find out that Jackie is gay? Also, Darlene and Becky changed husbands? When did that happen? |

In the big monologue at the end of the finale. Roseanne is saying that basically the show was a book she was writing. However, she changed a few things. That's when she mentioned Darlene was really with Mark, Becky was really with David, Dan died of the heart attack he had in the show, Jackie was really gay, they never won the lottery and so on. |

It was the worst final episode of a hit show that I ever saw in my life. Enough said.

i've never seen it, but my wife is a big fan of the show and I bought her each of the seasons, until the last one, to which she said "oh, i don't need that one."

The final season was a train wreck and never should have happened. They should have ended the show with Darlene's wedding and Dan's heart attack.

I for one was NOT a fan of the last season for the same reasons as most of you had stated, however I can't say that it was the worst ever for a sitcom either because that's really just a matter of opinion. I will say that it's the worst that I had personally seen out of all the sitcoms I have watched.

I think most people give the title of worst finale to Seinfeld. While I don't agree with that, jail is where they all belonged, many people still think it sucked.
The first time I watched the Roseanne finale I was impressed with the twist, now not so much. I agree it does change the way you watch the reruns. The only episodes I can watch in the last season is Darlene's baby almost dies, gets me every time , and the finale. Roseannebo? WTF.

The last season of Roseanne was pretty horrible. I wasn't happy with all the fantasy story lines, I wasn't happy with the lack of Dan, but I really enjoyed the added drama (Dan's affair, Darlene's baby, etc.)
As for the finale I actually thought it was one of the best. I loved how the entire series was basically just a book Roseanne was writing and how it harped back to an episode from season one (?). At the same time it was kind of a twist of the whole "it's just a dream" story line, so I can see how people thought it was tired. But I really enjoyed it. |

I think with how bad the final season was, it's not hard to see why the final episode proved to be a big disappointment.
But at least it explained away the entire final season and went back to its roots. I think I would have been more disappointed if the finale ended with them still rich and living the high life. |

No. I thought the series finale was quite creative. A lot of fans of the show didn't like it and believed it was kinda of cheap ending for such a lousey season which I agree that season 9 was not very good at all. However, I was glad to hear that Roseanne continued her writing career unknown to the rest of us. The only part that bothered me with the whole reveal was the fact that Dan had been dead for the past year. This was very sad and depressing and almost made want to cry when I heard the eerie sound of his voice talking as Roseanne stared at his empty chair. Though the rest of it was fine by me. Darlene/Mark revealed to be the "real" couple I thought was more believable than Becky/Mark. Just because I thought Becky was much too b*tchy to him and at least with Darlene he would give more of a challenge to her and would not as submissive as David had been which I always thought was boring. Plus Becky # 2 was always trying to turn Mark into something he wasn't which caused a lot tension in their marriage. Anyone else agree with this?
